Lakers have met with Dwight Howard's surgeon

Postby lakersStan24 on Sat Aug 18, 2012 6:06 am

AUGUST 13th

The Lakers met with Dr. Robert Watkins on Friday, the surgeon who operated on Dwight Howard's back. The procedure Howard had is called a "lumbar microdiscectomy," or a surgical removal of herniated disc fragments in the lower back. "We feel very assured he's going to be back," GM Mitch Kupchak said. "We're hopeful he's back for camp; we're hopeful he's back to start the season." The standard recovery time for Howard's procedure is six to seven months (he had surgery April 20), but Howard said that he'd be cleared for full contact "in four months," and that mark would be on August 20. By his own self-admission, Howard has not been cleared by doctors to resume on-court work, and while his status for opening night remains doubtful, his recovery timeframe clearly falls within the norm for this type of surgery.

Even if we assume he needs full 6 months, he's still ready by October 20. I am hopeful.

He'll have 6 full months and ~20 days to rehab for our first actual game Oct. 30 vs. the Mavs. The only thing that's going to keep him out of the opener is a setback (please no) or the need for a little extra rehab time, in which case he wouldn't be out for that many games.

Given that he's a physical specimen, has top notch doctors and facilities at his disposal, IMO he will be back in time for the season opener.

He should go to Germany and get the Kobe knee treatment on his back to accelerate the healing. :jam2: :man1:

Even if he isn't back for the season opener...that's alright. Dwight, just don't rush it and come back at 100%

I LOL-ed. :man10:

But I think he should just get a German Kobe treatment on both his knees, in addition to his back, just in case.

Yes. This has been a real possibility the entire time. The media has been spreading the idea that he'd miss a lot of time, but people with knowledge of the situation and procedure have said differently.

If he misses time it will be due to a setback or simple precautionary measures. He may not play comfortably that soon, but that's natural coming off of surgery.

It sounds like a surgery that most people come back from 100%. It's not a full herniation or vertabrae issues.

Except Dwight just got back from back surgery & LeBron doesn't have a hit on him.

He should be working on his ugly free throw stroke while he's recovering... Instead of going to dodger games and bumming it up with celebrities

I hope he's not rushed back. Let him recover 100%. If that happens to be before October great, if not, he sits!

So what you're saying is. . . why isn't he in the gym?

Well, he is in the gym actually... but that FT stroke and all... that's probably not going to happen.

I don't think Dwight will ever be a good free throw shooter. He's in the same mold as Wilt and Shaq. Best I can see him at is 65% or so. I know he shot around that his rookie season but he didn't shoot nearly as many free throws back then.

Off topic but why does your name remind me of this:
