oh crap that's right...he even put on a green jersey :bang:

he's lucky Dr Buss doesn't have an inner Al Davis...his jersey would be on Sacre instead of the wall

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Kobe goes for around 60 that game, in order to steal the spotlight from Shaq.

Your trite argument bears no weight in how I feel about Shaq as a Laker having his number retired. Let's put all their numbers up then?

It's time to let it go with Shaq. Appreciate the good things he brought...he's an important part of the Laker legacy, like it or not.

I can't really stand him either...especially after he attacked LA fans....but I'm over it, you should get over it too.

Why are people still butt hurt over what Shaq did? Seriously it was 8 years ago, jeez :man10:

Only thing surprising or remotely controversial about all this is just how soon Shaq's getting this honor. No doubt he deserves it and 90% of us have moved on and Dr. Buss has long since moved on, since he's a class act. But someone like Wilkes must feel bad that he's waited this long and Kareem has been "passed over" in getting his statue, but Shaq gets his honor less than two years after retiring? The poor health of Dr. Buss and the convince Dwight to stay angles are interesting theories, but who knows the real reason.

I'm really glad they're doing this while Kobe is still playing. Honestly, I wished for this moment, that they could retire Shaq's number and Kobe could be there to shake his hand, say some nice words, and leave the fans with one final sweet memory of the two together. Hopefully, Shaq would return the favor when it's time for Kobe's number to go up there as well. In the end, this is what you remember though - the good times, the highlight plays that made you jump to your feet, and the little things that made you like them as Lakers.

Two things:

1. Where is Shaqfan when you need him?

2. As a huge fan of Shaquille O'Neal myself, I am really happy. I knew it would happen eventually, but this really cements him as a great Lakers player. I still have the LA Times sports page from when the Lakers acquired him back in 1995.

For what it's worth, the Lakers also clinched the Pacific Division, an achievement Bryant dismissed by saying "We don't hang divisions." No, only the big NBA championship banners are considered wall-worthy for the Lakers.

Shaq as a Laker:

- 2 All-Star MVPs
- 3 Finals MVPs (when the Lakers won 3 championships)
- 4 finals appearances
- 1 NBA MVP
- averaged 27ppg, 11.8 rebounds per game, and 57% FG% (Source)
- 3 championships

Love him or hate him, he is worthy.

I bet if he's still alive when Kobe retires, we seem some immediate things happening in terms of Kobe getting honored and his jersey retired.

the thing that makes me mad about retiring shaq's number isn't really the way he acted before he left LA, although that is a huge reason not to honor him. but it's the fact that he played a year for the celtics. that alone just puts a damper on the whole thing. if it wasn't for that, i'd still be reluctant but at the end of the day i wouldnt have an issue with it

but retiring the number of a player who played for the lakers most hated rival just leaves a horrible taste in my mouth

Shaq avoided playing through even the smallest injury and one year, he waited until the week before the season started to decide he would have surgery. "On Company time".
“I want a raise or I won’t play”. He was still under contract.
“He (Kobe) ran me out of town”.
"Tell me how my [Swearing is not permitted at Clublakers. You must edit this post prior to submitting.] tastes".
“One thing I really hate is a front-runner, and I despise front-runners,” then went ring chasing in Cleveland and Boston.

From this, I despise the unwillingness to be in shape and play through injury, to disrespect Buss publicly like that, to disrespect the city and the team's fans as he did, and in the end for being a Celtic...
NO.

LOL let's get real, those things are nothing... Yes, he joined the Celtics, but he was on his last legs and irrelevant at that point... You can't refuse his jersey up the rafters because he was immature... His contributions were legendary and cannot be ignored...

Sorry, but unless he pulled a Chris Benoit, his jersey will be retired...
