LAKERS SIGN GREG SOMOGYI AND REEVES NELSON

EL SEGUNDO - The Los Angeles Lakers have signed rookie center Greg Somogyi and rookie forward Reeves Nelson, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not released.

Somogyi, a 7-3 center out of UC Santa Barbara, played all four years for the Gauchos where he posted career averages of 3.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 12.2 minutes. Somogyi most recently played for the 2012 Lakers Summer League team where he averaged 1.2 points, 1.6 rebounds in 7.2 minutes.

Nelson, a 6-8 forward out of UCLA, was also a member of the 2012 Lakers Summer League team where he averaged 4.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in 16.3 minutes of play. Named to the All- PAC 10 first team following his sophomore year, Nelson played in 68 games for the Bruins averaging 12.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 27.0 minutes.

^^ I don't have a problem with the signing. I watched Nelson play early on at UCLA before all the drama with him and Howland/rest of the team. He's got some talent, especially on the offensive end. He's also a natural rebounder. He had good size for college, but he's a tweener for sure in NBA. Which might not be a bad thing. Basically I felt like he was a Rambis type player - good hustle and boards, strong body, not the greatest athlete but made up for it with basketball skills and knowledge, and a pretty decent offensive player. Who knows? Clearly we have a slew of backup PG's already (Blake, Duhon, Morris), we are good at backup SG (Meeks, Glock, Odom), we have PF's and C's (Sacre, Hill, Jamison and now this other guy Somogyi). So it makes sense to have a tweener to go behind Ebanks.

Even though he got into it w/Howland and the team and is a bit of a head case, I still think he has talent. I may be biased because he was a fellow Bruin, but I think it's all right.

If Mitch thought Reeves is OK now, I'll have to go with that. People do get themselves turned around sometimes. Exhibit A: MWP...

Regarding Samogyi: you can't teach height. Only reason he's getting any attention at all.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I watched a lot of Somogyi. The dude is straight up garbage. If you thought Sacre was bad, this guy is absolutely awful.

6 fouls and a nice karate chop to Wade's head is not garbage. :man1:

the league minimum for rookies is $490,180...

Reeves was kicked off his college team, and was straight up garbage in Europe. So why is he getting more than the minimum?

Really? I don't know a whole lot about Clark at all, but from what I gather the guy is a shot blocking 6 foot 10 pogo stick with not much offense or rebounding. From what I know of the two they have completely opposite skill sets. Nelson is a guy who has some offense and a knack for the boards but isn't going to do any leaping or athletic acts of any kind. He's also bulky and not that tall. They are like polar opposites so I don't see how they would be playing anything resembling a similar role. Clark looks more like a 4 in the NBA and Nelson looks more like a thick 3.

^i'll admit I don't know too much about Earl Clark, and I always considered him a 4, but i've heard he plays some 3 as well due to his smallish frame. I guess a bigger less refined Trevor Ariza?

Either way Nelson is pretty much your classic NBA undersized 4. Not nearly athletic, skilled, or fast enough to play the 3 in the NBA. He also plays under the rim for the most part, so he's going to have to develop a deadly midrange game like Brandon Bass, or shoot the 3 ball like Kevin Love. I don't see his garbage man style offense translating to the NBA, his rebounding however, might.

I would rather have this guy than than Morris, Glock or maybe even Sacre.
He wud be a very gud practice player and can still be develop

We have all the time to have prospects right now-it might just pan out

Somogyi is terrible. 7'3" all wuss. Sacre is a much better player than he is and I'm not exaggerating. Somogyi didn't even start on a team that didn't beat Long Beach out for a chance at the tourney. His only redeeming quality is height, but he's not a rebounder by any means, he's very weak physically, and he's not going to get you a ton of baskets around the rim. Even in that video you see him shooting jumpers out near the three point line at times.

But if all you want is size, you can't go wrong with that freakish height.

Big men Robert Sacre and Jeff Somogyi showed themselves capable of playing with the more experienced bigs on L.A.’s roster, and will have a chance to show what they can do in training camp. Each 7-footer did some scoring, some boarding and some blocking in the scrimmage. Making the roster isn’t going to be easy for any of the younger players, but the opportunity will be there.

Like I've said: the guy is a big body and for that he has some value, but offensively he has no skills in the NBA. Defensively he's too slow for much help defense and too weak for stronger Centers.
