LQOTD: Down 2 in closing seconds, who gets the ball now?

Postby The Rock on Wed Apr 24, 2013 2:43 pm

Found this another forum so I thought I'd ask....So Kobe is gone who do you give the ball to now if the Lakers are down 2 with like 10 seconds left? Post up for Pau or Howard? Pick and Pop for Nash/Gasol? Blake/Jamison 2 man game? Metta iso? What lineup of 5 players would you have and what play would you run to get a good shot?

Nash. If injured then Blake. Pau could work but it takes too long to score in the paint.

I know you're kidding about the Howard/Metta options. I hope.

edit 2: (forgot about Antawn) Blake/Nash/Clark/Jamison/Pau I guess...for maximum shooting ability and some O reb potential.

edit: I read with 2 seconds left. I suppose if we have 10 seconds we could feed the ball to Pau. and let him draw a double. Ideally a pick and roll should work, but hasn't really been the answer for us in 2012-13.

Lineup.......Nash / Blake / Glock / Pau / D12

-Blake/Glock spacing the floor
- 1-4-5 pick and roll

Nash comes off open he shoots, Nash gets doubled kicks it to Pau, Pau shoots or lobs to D12.

If Pau is playing like white swan, put in Jamison in place of him.

Nash obviously.

Second would be Gasol.

Third would be Blake.

Fourth would be... Metta? Howard? Somewhere in there.

Nash / Blake / Jamison / Gasol / Dwight

This is how I would play it.

Blake inbounds. Jamison is in the immediate corner for a quick shot. Gasol, Howard set down screens for Nash, the main target man (or so it would seem).

Option 1 - The screen frees Nash and he takes an open jumper.
Option 2 - Dwight's man doubles off Nash, Dwight rolls to basket for a lob.
Option 3 - Gasol's man doubles off Nash, Gasol pops to the free throw line for a jumper. If Dwight's man helps to Gasol, lob to Dwight.
Option 4 - Jamison's man is caught helping on Nash, open jumper for Jamison.
Option 5 - Blake passes it in to Gasol/Dwight and runs a rub screen for a shot. If he is doubled, Pau/Dwight roll to the basket.

Gasol? I'm not sure if I want to give it to him at the top of the arc.

I think you've run more options in this thread than MDA has run all year.

In all seriousness, we've run those PnR's this year and it seems like the defense always manages to help quick enough. The times they don't, it's usually an open/semi open 3....which we sometimes hit, sometimes don't. :man6:

The thing is, in a last second situation, teams usually more than not, double off the screener. I'm willing to trust Nash to make that pass in that situation.

For me I'd go with a Pau/Howard pick and roll at the free throw line/free throw line extended

If he were healthy, the obvious one is Nash. Thought of Gasol but two seconds he'd try to pass it or take five to six jab steps.

Nash

Blake

Gasol. In the post.

Jamison

In that order.

I don't think I would give it to Dwight, except if this is a lob play or something similar.

Nash to Gasol in the high post.. He looks for Dwight for the lob, Nash with an open shot or a cutter, if none of those are there he creates his own shot & hopefully gets fouled in the process.

steve black.

i'm only half-kidding.

seriously, though, nash/howard pick and roll, look for gasol when howard draws the second defender on the roll, hope he can make a play. so, nash initiates, with the hopeful results being a) howard dunk (unlikely), b) nash short jumper, c) gasol creates own shot from high post, d) gasol finds open player.

1) Nash.
2) Out of bounds lob to Dwight.

Why wouldn't a wide-open under-the-basket Dwight Howard be the #1 option?
