Or, Wade knowing that he isn't the level he was before, takes a cut too.

Wade
Kobe
Melo
Lebron
Pau

Well aside from Bosh being marginalized to the point that I feel his game has regressed, I think they have to do the obvious and make a run at LeBron if he's available. The best player in the game doesn't come available very often and when he does you have to at least try to land him.

I'd not hate picking up Bosh, but I wouldn't love it either. Especially not near a max contract at this point in his career.

Not really... not without a formal source. He can't fine the Lakers because Ramona could be totally making this up. :man10:

Excellent PR work for the Lakers. Letting LeBron and Carmelo know now they're looking at getting them this summer without actually saying it and getting fined. Put the thought in their minds and in the minds of the fans. Let the idea grow.

Brilliant.

Lebron isn't leaving Miami...Carmelo may leave NY, though. That's our most realistic target, IMO. The Knicks will flame out again this year and if Carmelo decides, and he will entertain coming to L.A. and seriously consider it.

The best way to recruit is let Kobe recruit Camelo and then Camelo recruit LeBron. Kobe, Camelo and LeBron the face of the Lakers franchise. The Lakers should get okay with Camelo first and Camelo request James to join him in the Lakers uniform.

Maybe not. Maybe they get Ron Ron again like we did for substantial periods here.....and it's closer to "Indiana Ron". We got that as best he could when he could and Dude stays in shape. Now he's pumped all summer to work. Not saying savior but just a fond shout out to what Metta brings. Like Kobe, every freaking night.

Lakers angling to land LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony next summer, according to report

The Lakers hope to follow up a disappointing offseason with a historic one as they eye LeBron and Melo.

It's been a brutally disappointing offseason for the Los Angeles Lakers, but next summer could bring untold riches back to one of basketball's marquee franchise. With LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony possibly joining a stacked free agent class, the Lakers plan to aggressively pursue both players following next season, Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst of ESPN LA report.

After striking out on their bid to sign Dwight Howard to a max contract, the Lakers could have significant cap flexibility entering the summer of 2014. With a free agent class potentially featuring James, Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Luol Deng, Dirk Nowitzki, Danny Granger and Andrew Bogut, the possibilities are nearly endless.

However, Shelburne and Windhorst say that ultimately Los Angeles wants James and/or Anthony, even if it's unclear how that might happen:

"Opinions are split on whether the Lakers can actually land James or Anthony, with one source calling it 'realistic' and another saying it was 'far-fetched at this point.' Nonetheless, the Lakers have made it clear they are positioning themselves for a run at one and perhaps even two of the superstars who could become free agents in 2014, by refusing to commit to any contract past this next season."
By removing the huge contracts of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Metta World Peace and others from their books before next season, there will be just two Lakers under contract: Steve Nash and Robert Sacre. That means L.A. could have huge flexibility to offer multiple max contracts, should that route be appealing.

The big remaining question is whether James or Anthony even wants to play for Los Angeles. Both players will likely use their early-termination options next summer to hit free agency, but nearly every team will be pursuing them -- based on past experience, one imagines whichever teams offers the best title chances will be at the front of the line.

That could be the Lakers, but it probably won't be. With just an aging Nash and an inexperienced Sacre around, other teams will surely be able to offer things Los Angeles can't. And while the nightlife and history provided by the Lakers appealed to many free agents over the years, we saw with Howard that sometimes other things take priority.

Entering what should be a frustrating 2013-14 season, the Lakers appear to have a plan. It's speculative, highly ambitious and probably a tad idealistic, but it's something -- and if it works, the Lakers' brief trip down rebuilding road will have been a resounding success.

Some things to keep in mind

https://twitter.com/brosales12

Ironic thing in 2014 is that Melo's max is significantly higher than Bron's max. $2 million difference. What you get for taking a discount.

Bron can make $21,735,000 from another team. Melo up to $23,527,847 (!). Sure as hell hope we don't pay Melo that much.

Will depend on LA's draft position, but ironically, if they get Wiggins, technically don't have enough to offer both LBJ/Melo their max.

Lakers have to walk a very fine line if they want to be players in 2015 and sign someone big in 2014. Not as easy as it seems.

If Young opts in, Lakers get Wiggins, sign Melo to the max, $17,418,059 left in cap space. Bit deceiving though.

You have to guarantee $18-19M in space opens up in 2015. That means that much expiring contracts or space above the salary floor.

Nash has a $9,701,000 expiring, so you have to ensure at least $7,717,059 more in one-year salary commitments in 2015.

So you technically only have about $10 million to re-sign both Kobe and Pau. That will be fun

Of course, a lower draft pick and Melo taking a bit less could offer a bit more flexibility. Still hard to pay Kobe eight figures though.

For those asking, you can't just re-sign Kobe and Pau w/Bird rights. They carry a cap hold that erases your space until you renounce them.

So if Kobe wants to give the team a big discount, that would be peachy, especially if re-signing Pau is at stake.

Very difficult to pursue any B-level guys in 2014 though and still maintain 2015 flexibility. Too much space needed.

Ironically, Nash being on the books in 2014 helps the Lakers pursue guys in 2015. Expiring that is ensured to go off the books.

Well this guy doesn't quite get it. :man10:

The Lakers aren't contenders in that summer without Carmelo and LeBron but...

You stretch out Nash and you have 50 million available. Kobe takes a paycut, Carmelo and LeBron sign, Pau takes whatever is left or the MLE, Nick Young opts in. If the Lakers draft a PG with their first rounder you're looking at:
1st Round Pick
Kobe
Carmelo
LeBron
Gasol

with Sacre and Young off the bench. That's with either a couple bucks left over before the cap or the MLE to offer. You have the bi-annual exception, and veteran minimum contracts. I mean seriously that's immediately a favorite for at least 2-3 years.

Honestly i dont see Kobe teaming up with LeBron. I think he rather retire with 5 than forming team full with superstars ala Heat.
Melo on other hand is a good addition IMO, let Kobe and Melo do the damage offensevlly and surround them with guys who can defend and shoot the 3.

Not really, especially if we wave Nash or he retires if he has another bad season this year. With 60 mill we can easily get Melo, Bron and extend Kobe. Then we can fill the roster with MLE and vet min. I'm sure plenty of people will line up to play for us for a chance to get a title.

Exactly. LeBron is happy. He ain't leaving. Period. Not unless the Heat win only 40 games next season or get swept in the 1st round without injuries. I'm willing to put money on it.

If somehow we strike it Big in 2014, that's great... I personally think a more realistic approach is to start assembling a decent core & then try to attract free agents like Love & Durant after we actually have a core...

We do have a core: Kobe and Pau.

We're not going to go into a long rebuild if we can rebuild now and if we could get Carmelo and LeBron in 2014 then we have a fantastic shot at winning a ring or two for Kobe before he retires.

Sure, putting LeBron & Melo with Kobe & Pau would be great... If we win that lottery, I'd be thrilled.
But even the biggest optimist has to realize that's a long shot.

If that doesn't happen, then I'm not sure how you consider Kobe & Pau our Core going into 2015 or 2016...

Don't agree with the posters saying Lebron won't leave Miami. I think any of them leaving depends on 1 thing & 1 thing only, winning.. If Lebron wins another 1 this year, I agree, he won't leave.. But if somehow the Nets or someone came out of the East, I could see us having a shot at Lebron too.. No matter what NY is unlikely to make it out of the East, that's why I think our chances are better to land Melo. If Lebron wins again, Melo is much easier to convince. I mean, what gives you a better chance at beating Lebron than teaming up with Kobe? It's a no brainer.
