Good (actually a great) hire, but relative to what could have been, I'm still a little disappointed. Still, this team will be just fine. It will be exciting to see the new look on Lakers offense once Nash gets back.

I'm just happy #FireMikeBrown happened...As Bernie has shown, this team can be coached by anyone, as long as they stay out of the way.

I never supported Mike Brown and I have no plans to support D'Antoni. I also do not support the way the front office has handled this, and I am very disappointed to see the Lakers associated with deceit and underhanded tactics.

I do support the team, the players, and I hope they can win the title despite having D'Antoni as their coach.

To answer the tread title posit: Amare created a 200 mil all-star career, Shaq avgd 18, and even Gortat avgd 15. I think the post will be just fine with Dwight at 24/12 ish, Pau at 17/10 ish.

Gortat didn't play for D'Antoni, and Shaq didn't average that under D'Antoni.

Not really. Shaq wasn't part of some SSOL offensive scheme. The dude was a 36-year-old behemoth. When Shaq averaged 18 ppg, they were force feeding him in the post and took some responsibilities away from Nash. It didn't take long for them to realize that Shaq just didn't fit on the team. After they got rid of Shaq (and Porter), Nash lead a historically great offensive team. That team was nearly unstoppable on the offensive end, and they pushed our championship Lakers to 6 games (almost 7).

Gentry did bring back the SSOL offense. Still, it wasn't the SSOL offense that helped Gortat average career highs. It was Nash. Let's put it this way. What benefited Gortat? Trying to run down the court in 7 seconds and get an easy bucket or running the pnr with Nash and having Nash find him? Nash himself said that they weren't doing that much running anymore. They were more of a pnr team.

I think people are taking MDA's defensive "lacking" too far. He coached the Suns to a league average Drtg with Amare. Defense will not be a problem (or at least it won't become a bigger problem).

My concern is that D'Antoni had two all-stars in NY, one down low and and iso guy on the wing, and he couldn't win games. No Nash, no wins, I guess.

average isnt good enough to win a title. every championship team since the 2001 lakers (21st in defensive rating) has been a top 10 defensive team.

^^^But Chooks...defense in today's game is overrated. Just look at what the Heat team did...they played small uptempo up and down basketball and won the title. Ignore that you need youth to play that way in the first place and ignore that they ranked 4th in the league in defensive efficiency (5th in the playoffs vs 12th for OKC)...just forget all that! That team won in spite of Spoels...and D'Antoni is a much better coach.

With Nash, we runnin all the way to the title....Showtime baby!

His teams were average defensively with mostly bad defenders. Dwight (once fully healthy) alone makes us a top 10 defensive team.

I think we are going to be solid defensively. We have better defensive players then those Suns teams. And on offense, we do have Nash. We do have the best P&R player in Dwight. We have Kobe. I am not concerned.

They should give tacos for keeping the opponent under 100, or scoring over 120.

It's been a wild week to say the least.
I’m happy to have closure and can't wait to get to work with Coach D'Antoni.. spacing, ball movement. And despite the chatter, I believe we will be phenomenal defensively. I’m looking forward to getting started with him and his staff this week.

A company man with a company line...that's all I see. His sincerest comments came when he was gushing about Phil and how he let the man down in his last run at a title.

It's still dissapointing, but b******* about it isn't gonna change things. MDT is our coach just accept it. At first I was furious, but now that I've calmed down so to speak it's not that bad of a hire. Matter of fact he may actually be a better fit than Phil would've. Reason being is outside of Kobe, World Peace, and Gasol none of the players really know the triangle. To ask them to try to learn it during the season with no training camp would've made it very difficult. MDT might have had teams that have struggled defensively, but he never really had a lockdown defender on his roster. When Dwight gets back to full health he's the best defensive player in the league and as a result this team will be very tough to score on.

I was really upset at first when I heard the news, but now that I've had time to think about it ... I feel less upset. For the following reasons:

1) I bet MDA will turn Blake in to a very serviceable backup PG. Blake was just that prior to coming to LA.

2) Even though MDA is not a defensive coach, we do have very good individual defenders in MWP and especially, D12. Sure, the Suns played no defense but they didn't exactly have the best defensive minded players. We won't be a lockdown defensive team but if we can score 110 PPG we won't need to be.

3) MDA has no rings. But at some point Phil had no rings. Erik Spoelstra had no rings once. Maybe we can help Nash and D'Antoni get their first rings ... that's a pretty cool story.

Hopefully he limits Kobe, Pau, and Metta to no more than 34 mins a game. Please don't overplay our starters like what Brown did. Now let's let this guy have a chance (especially after Nash gets back) before we throw him under the bus already.

What's interesting is that D'Antoni's Knicks were the 5th best defensive team in the league when they got Chandler. When Howard gets into better shape, we can hope to get close.

If we end up as the NBA's premier offensive juggernaut team, our defense only needs to rank around the middle or higher to have a good shot at the ring. Teams like Miami take pride in their defense, but if they can't guard us, that just may be our only hope.
