So about Phil....

Seriously though, what he said in the presser is what's been said about this team: Looks good on paper...now make it happen!

D'Antoni is like a Formula One driver being handed a vintage Rolls. Better learn how to drive and maintain it properly unlike the last one. Ease up on the gas, jack...and don't overload the odometer.

7 seconds or less? There will be more 7's needed if that indeed going to be the offensive scheme..... like 7 Oxygen tanks on the bench..... 7 Paramedics "just in case" and 7 timeouts a half for the Lakers.....

Not sure if this was posted already, but a couple other Lakers greats had different takes to Magic's.

Jerry West:
"Will Mike be the guy to lead them (to a championship)?" West asked. "I don't know. But I went to bed the other night thinking Phil Jackson was going to be the coach, and it didn't work out that way. Why? An owner has a right to change his mind, and the owner is Jerry Buss, and he still has input. And at the end of the day, I'm assuming, that was as much his decision as it was (general manager) Mitch Kupchak's and (team vice president) Jim Buss'."

Kareem:
"I think Mike D'Antoni is a great coach. He's proven that," Abdul-Jabbar said. "His offensive schemes work. He really got the Phoenix Suns up and moving, and I think that will work well for the Lakers team with the talent that they have."
In the real world, the day Steph awoke at 9 a.m. to begin his Ustream show, Kobe Bryant probably awoke at the same time, even if it was 6 a.m. in California, and lifted weights.

Los Angeles Lakers ‏@Lakers
D’Antoni talked about how he’s been trying to acquire @SteveBlake5 for 10 years, but it never worked out. “He’s perfect for this system.”

I love how D'antoni said if we're not averaging 110-115 points with this unit, he's failed. Because if we're really averaging that, or even close to it, our defense will be good enough just based on individual talent to hold other teams down.

It's not about opp PPG. It's more about PPG differential. That determines defense.

If we hit 115 point or more between now and February I'll be surprised..... If we win that game I'll be even more surprised...

That kind of pace would obliterate out defense IMO... not help it. We give up a lot of 3 pointers per possession that are wide freaking open.... giving our opponents more opportunities doesn't sound like a good thing to me... to put it another way.... the 3 point % differential between the Lakers and out opponents (the top teams in the West) is large enough that if those trends expand with more possessions it isn't good for us. Add in the fact that our free throw shooting is going to be near the bottom of the league per possession and it's doubly bad. Those are two things MDA has never had to deal with at his other two stops....

The only thing I hated about his conference is him saying that he thinks posting up isn't efficient.

My face when he said that

^ ^I think he was talking about Dwight being more efficient not posting up so much. In a sense, I agree because Dwight has been causing turnovers posting up when he gets stripped keeping the ball too low.

If our bench can play better in MDA's system then we're set.

No, I'm certain that D'Antoni was talking about posting up in general. In the current NBA with the current rules, it's a lot harder to post up, and it's a lot harder to be efficient at it. It's not simply about dumping the ball into our bigs and having them go to work anymore.

From what I remember from the interview (I might have to listen to it again), D'Antoni was not talking about taking away post ups. He was talking about finding the best option. Simply posting up for the sake of doing it is not being efficient.

First, you try to get some easy baskets. Get transition baskets. If that's not there, running can create some mismatches anyway. You take advantage of that. Let's say a smaller man is on Dwight. THEN, you post him up. You don't walk the ball up, have the defense be set, and let Perkins defend Dwight just for the sake of posting up. Posting up can be a great option, but it's not when you're trying to post up a great defender. You look around and try to find your best option.

If you don't run, run some pnr. Let Nash and Dwight run a two-man show. If the defense decides to switch, then Nash realizes this. He'll then dump the ball into Dwight and have him take advantage of the mismatch.

You look at your best options. You take advantage of your mismatches or try to create them.
