Hurts the team too much on offense to justify playing time. I know other players with solid D and crap O but at least they don't take a shot every time they touch the ball.

If you suck on O...its OK as long as you don't take dumb shots. Artest is clearly a liability and his D is so-so which means he needs to be axed...amnesty, trade, whatever.

but, but he gives effort so that's enough. lack of productivity means nothing. effort is everything. :man10:

I know Ebanks looked terrible more times than not but I think we should give him another shot, even if its only for a few minutes. It is not like MWP is that much better. I have no problem with MWP taking open shots/3s or any other player who is capable. But when he constantly kills ball movement, dribbles around trying to be Kobe, or take a dumb shot it is unacceptable. His negatives outweigh his positives by far right now. Maybe he just needs another chance.

I love Metta's effort and I don't want him going anywhere. His defensive ability is still very high and I wouldn't want to see him defending us.

If we trade Gasol for a starting caliber SF and moved Metta to the bench, we'd be in great shape. Metta can do all of his dumb things off the bench and we wouldn't have to worry about it much, but he'd still bring that fantastic defensive presence and energy.

Agreed.. He's getting old.. His defense isn't what it was, but it would be helped greatly by moving him to the bench & cutting his minutes. Also, he'd get minutes at backup PF where guys can't kill him as much with their footspeed. He really drives me nuts taking shots off the dribble like he's Kobe though. Stick to only shooting when wide open.

D matters the whole game not just some late 4th stops, i know it's not his fault he can't guard Dirk but outside of being able to swipe at balls here and there he really can't defend much at all, to slow against faster SF, to short to defend tall PF and once he gets picked off on a screen dude gets lost never helps off of the pick. He bring way more negative offense than what ever little he brings on defense.

Last 20 games :

75/221 (33.9%) from the field, 35/109 (32.1%) from 3

4th quarters this season :

47/144 (32.6%) from the field , 15/73 (20.6%) from 3 .... easily his worst numbers as a Lakers

By instance , Shane Battier a decent role player who plays within himself and got the type of looks MWP is getting from 3

4th quarters this season :

22/47 ( 46.8%) , 20/40 from 3

By the way , posters are talking about Metta D ... a simple screen and is completely out of the picture ... he has to guard post up players all game long now if we want effective D from him ...

I would put Clark on the opponent SF ... he sucks at getting around screens too but his length and athleticism make it more difficult for the player he's defending

I'll say this for Metta: his defense yesterday was fantastic and it has been fantastic for the last few games. His offense is definitely awful and often borders on the idiotic, but defensively he never stops bringing it. He must have more blocks with his left hand this season than any other SFs. That lefty block, the steals, the way he pushed Dirk around the floor in the 4th. You're not going to stop Dirk once he gets the ball, but Metta did about as well as anyone could be expected to do.

Even on the last play, the reason Dirk didn't shoot the ball was because of Metta's quick hands. I'll give him that credit.

I just don't know at this point whether or not it outweighs the damage he does offensively. Again, if we move him to the bench I'm not as worried about it, but as the starting SF it gives us a lot of problems.

I liked those numbers you posted up in your previous post. That's how bad he's been, and it's getting worse. IMO, his defense is not good enough to offset his defense. He scored 1 point yesterday and we won the game by 3. This is our starting SF. We need more production offensively, period.

Now, his defense against the bigger some of the PF's has been good. That's it. When we play a better team then Dallas, he gets exploited on both ends; for example, the Miami game. Nevertheless, we can't do nothing about it right now...

I know we're 2 games past but that Por. game were he got that 5sec backdown TO was just a perfect example of how selfish and idiotic he can be offensively. Kobe was RIGHT next to him and he conts. his back down and didn't even make any progress :bang: :mad1:

^He dribbled to much for sure however it wasn't a 5-sec call. Or it shouldn't have been anyway.
For what it's worth, the Lakers also clinched the Pacific Division, an achievement Bryant dismissed by saying "We don't hang divisions." No, only the big NBA championship banners are considered wall-worthy for the Lakers.

I dont blame entirely for his struggles hes not a 35mpg player anymore especially with today's faster paced game. Why havent the FO tried to get a backup SF we have been desperate at that position all year...they thinking Lakers will be ok going small I guess

The FO has nothing to do with a player who can't play within himself ...

They did their job in the offseason to say the least ... the MWP , Meeks and Blake need to step their game up and knock down open shots on a consistent basis ... which shouldn't be that difficult for professional players

He's been detrimental to offensive flow since he got here which is why they had to break away from the triangle in 2010. He at least had excellent man d back then but now his defense is vastly overrated but everyone forgives him because he comes up with some steals after getting burned from gambling 95% of the time.

Eff it.

He locked down LMA vs POR and prevented him from tying the game down the stretch.

He locked down Dirk and prevented him from tying the game down the stretch.

I'll take it.

I'll also take it... for now.

But once his defense stops making up for his offense, I want him on the bench or on another team (preferably the former).

I dont know why its so hard for him to play within himself?? come on hes been in the league so long, hes been with us 4 years now doesnt he know his role and limitations, Im not saying dont take open 3s created from ball movement but when you dont have it going, pass the ball since theres time on the clock. Theres just this lack of recognition on what his abilities are and how he fits into this team

^ That's what I think as well. I'm not sure you find another guy of his caliber at a lower price. Yes, MWP is getting long in the tooth, but if we can bring in a starting caliber SF by moving Pau in the offseason I'd still be into having him come off the bench.
