why dont they just release him?

i'm sure another team picks him up and that way the lakers are off the hook for the rest of his contract correct?

Steve Nash doing some light shooting today at Lakers' practice facility. Still at least a week from returning (sore back).

well, he may be right--this could happen to a younger player. but that younger player may also be forced into retirement.

Lies. Not to mention nerve damage coming from both ends of the nerve is debilitating no matter how old you are.

I'd be willing to bet Nash's decade plus history of back problems had more to do with his problem now than his fractured leg.

Nerve root irritation most commonly results from a structure close to a nerve, such as a joint, ligament and/or muscle, which has sustained accumulative strain which results in swelling and inflammation.

I can't help but feel bad for the guy.. He spent his entire career being the ultimate teammate & making everyone around him better.. When he finally got a chance to win his body gave out on him & now most of us wish he was never a Laker.. I'd be willing to bet he would have a much easier time retiring if he was still in Phx.. He still wants to contribute to this team & win the fanbase over so he doesn't go out on a sour note.

@PeterVecsey1: I'm hearing Nash's pain is forcing him 2 seriously consider calling it a career. He'd still get $ this yr & next & LA'd get cap relief next

https://twitter.com/petervecsey1/status ... 4640458752

I would hate to see a person go out like this against their own terms (Malone, Mutumbo, Vlade, Zo, Shaq) but it would put us in a much better position moving forward. That 9.7 million in 2014 can bring in some good free agents or be used to retain guys from this team like Young, Meeks, Wes, Blake, X, Farmar, Hill if they continue to play well.

Him retiring changes the game all together. He can stick around the team and locker room as a Laker ambassador and work with the guys like he's obviously taught. Blake some tricks but his playing days are up

Actually, that would be a good idea. That, or shooting coach. Because the guy is one of the best shooters in NBA history.

I truly hope he pulls the trigger on retirement. The team isn't going to win a championship, so he should really just hang it up. Best thing for him and best thing for our team going forward with salary cap relief next year.

Asst coach to Mike or some other coach next year. He is one of the smartest players ever and it would be great to have him on coaching staff.

Please do it. Having next to nothing in committed salary next year would be awesome.

I mean besides him the only other people officially with contracts are Sacre and Harris, but they're non-guaranteed and easily bought out if we want to.

We could have no people on our roster with the only commitments being our salary holds.

Sacre is guaranteed according to Hoopsworld. But it's only 900k.

Hm. Storytellers didn't but Basketballreference does and so does Sportrac.

Like you said, it's still only 900,000 and for that price it's probably worth it just to keep him anyway. A 7 footer for less than a million is always nice.

Don't we have to wait a year from the date of his retirement for the cap relief? Meaning we'd still have his cap hold next summer? If not, it would really be the best thing for the team if he retires, so I hope it happens.. The Lakers with a completely clear cap minus a few minimum players is going to be seen as a huge opportunity to build a legacy by some free agents.. Look at the guys we got to come here this summer to fill the void left by Dwight leaving & Kobe being sidelined.. I think the cleaner our slate is the higher our odds of signing or trading for atleast 2 star players to join up with Kobe.

We only have to wait a year if he as played 10 games or more. At this moment he has only played 6 so it's off right away.

Yeah, Nash hasn't played enough. He retires -> everyone profits. Including him. His body will be thankful, and maybe he can get a nice coaching/scouting job right away. Also, Nash would be a great analyst. He's smart and eloquent... the future is bright for him... just not on the basketball court where he is, sadly, done.

Oh how I wish I could believe Peter Vecsey, but without another source I just can't. I'd love for that to be true though, not the Nash in pain part, but the retirement part.
