I'll take over.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Nash stays relatively healthy and actually performs very well as Lin's back-up PG, raising his value and allowing Mitch to convert his contract into a relatively valuable asset at the trade deadline.

yeah, but no team in their rightful mind is going to want him because they know he will likely retire after this season.

I don't think its possible to trade Nash unless we do something stupid.

I haven't seen one trade yet where the team trading the expiring contract has gotten assets, I see more teams these days having to give up assets to dump expiring. So odd....maybe we started this trend when we sent Sasha/1st to the Nets? :man10:

Here's how I predict it goes....

He starts the season and plays every other night or so..... then gets injured again.... then we put him on the market as cap relief.... then Mitch and Co. try and work a super complicated 3 way deal with calculus to get a star in here.... then there is no time to complete it... then we get blocked again from getting rid of an actual asset.... then he retires....

THIS! That is PRECISELY why I think we should just cut him. We still have to pay his contract, and it counts against our cap no matter what (which is fine, at this point we should be COMFORTABLY under the luxury tax threshold after filling out the bottom of the roster) so even if we could get playing time out of him, it doesn't help our team's goals going forward. He'll only really be valuable to a contender that needs floor spreading shooting from the perimeter at the PG spot...definitely not us.

I'd much rather audition a young player for the season. There's basically NO WAY we can unload the deal at the deadline, but I'll understand if Mitch wants to play chicken with that until then...but I'll be disappointed if he doesn't cut Nash and audition a youngster after the deadline passes. I'd just do it now, so he could go to Toronto, or San Antonio, et al. and compete for a ring or have a farewell tour on a relevant playoff team.
The End is nigh. Time for a total Cut and Shuffle. Kobe contract was a mistake...time to avoid making more. The future is here, whether we want it to be or not. An era is over, but for the death rattle, and it's time for the cycle to begin anew. Growth and change are scary and painful, but alas...nothing worth achieving comes easily.

I'd be on board with cutting him at the deadline if he's hurt again.. No sense in cutting him when he can still be traded, not like we're going to sign any can't miss talent.

Steve Nash confirms this will be his last NBA season
Posted on July 28, 2014 by Mark Medina
Steve Nash talks about the disappointing season and his future following his Lakers exit interview at their training facility in El Segundo, CA on Thursday, April 17, 2014. (Photo by Scott Varley, Daily Breeze)

As he has labored tirelessly through back pain for the last two years, Steve Nash all but confirmed the obvious when looking ahead on what the last year of his $9.7 million with the Lakers will mean for his NBA future.

“I think this is my last season,” said the 40-year-old Nash in a video posted by Sport TV. But I still love to play, practice and work on my game. I’m going to spend hopefully many many years living this life without basketball. It’ll be nice to play one more year.”

The Lakers have not wavered on their stance that they would keep Nash for next season. Although the Lakers could waive him through the so-called amnesty provision, that would require them to pay out his salary through three years instead of one. Doing that could compromise the Lakers’ hopes to pursue high-level free agents both in 2015 (Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rajon Rondo) and 2016 (Kevin Durant).

The Lakers hardly have much confidence Nash can fully heal from a back injury that kept him sidelined for all but 15 games last season. That partly explains why the Lakers acquired Jeremy Lin in a trade from Houston and paid $1.8 million to Washington for their 46th draft pick to select Jordan Clarkson. But Nash could prove an integral piece, playing a mentor role even if it involves playing as a reserve in limited minutes.

Nash’s fledgling health marks one of the many reasons why the Lakers are expected to have a lengthy rebuilding process with another likely missed playoff appearance.

“They’re waiting to see which free agents are available next summer and the summer after, to be honest.” Nash said of the Lakers’ rebuilding strategy. It’s a cyclical league and sometimes you have to go down to come back up. Right now, the Lakers are down and it takes time. I don’t know if we’re going to have a chance this year or not. But obviously in the future, they’ll be back where they have been many times.”

I will be so happy when this guy is gone.

The bolded part just irks me so bad. You have Kobe telling people to get ready to surprise people, you have coach Scott saying to get ready to play some defense and have some Laker pride, the role players are getting behind Kobe and then you have Nash.....

"I don't know if we have a chance this year or not"

Go back to Phoenix with that loser attitude. :bang:

He should have retired last year in all honesty; but as Jalen says, 'keep cashing them checks,' even at the Lakers expense. :man5:

As a person I can't hold it against him...

As a fan I completely resent him for it. It's soured me completely on him and it'll be nice when he's gone.

That being said, hopefully he can be a teacher to Lin and Clarkson and Henry. Hopefully that's how he earns his keep this season.

Nash has had a loser attitude since last season was about to start. I know it's reality, but typically the players don't get that real for the fans sake, you'll never hear Kobe saying the season is over before it starts even if it's true. Even guys like Young and Boozer have said the message is come ready, time to go to work, even if they're underdogs.

The consensus is that he looks the best, but that could just be the Lakers pumping up their own dude. Apparently his nerves "aren't an issue anymore" which means they're not hurting at the moment.

Nerves flair up whenever they want to so we'll see how long that lasts. I'm going to guess 2 or 3 minutes into game 1.

I don't think he'll get that far honestly. Not unless he's playing 10 minutes a game or so.

I couldn't ask for a better outcome than that. That'd mean we probably have a pretty good season health-wise and have a solid shot at the playoffs.

I want Nash to play 15 min a game and then have more time in the playoffs (yup im talkin playoffs). Injury aside this guy is as ice cold as Kobe is on the floor. Id love to see him go out the right way instead of this shell of himself we have seen over the last 2 years

^ Personally I'd like to see 20 minutes a game (start 1st & 3rd for 5 min, close 2nd & 4th, final 5 mins) and sitting on back to backs. I think he and Scott can make that work for him.

If he does lets hope we trade him at game 46 or so.....

Why he's on a complete rebuilding team in his last year is still baffling..... He's taking minutes away from someone that has a chance, granted slim, but still a chance of being here next year.

How many times... must this be mentioned? the Lakers aren't rebuilding.... they are trying to win now... and if it comes at the cost of a trade during the season they will do it even if it messes up future cap flexibility.....

:man3: You're kidding.... Right?

We are trying to keep interest as high as possible while we wait for Kobe's replacement. You don't purposefully build a team with 3/4 of the players coming off the books at the same time in a "win now" mode. If we can get it rolling a little we may be decent but I see the top for this team as a 8th seed and first round exit. We could be as bad as last year as well if we have they injury bug bite again.
