NBA.COM: Lakers' Gasol ready to reclaim center position

^^I don't think Pau's passing is a good thing 90% of the time. His lack of aggressiveness dovetails with his passing numbers and is very misleading. I'd venture that most of his "passing" is when he had deep and significant position where he is one of the most skilled bigs in the game at scoring.... instead, he tosses the ball out of a spot where he would score 55% of the time to someone who will score less than 40% of the time.

While stats show passing efficiency I don't think they take into account that a Center, 4 feet from the hoop with a significant advantage just passed to a guy 20 feet from the hoop with little advantage. If your center is passing at that rate I don't think it's a good thing..... and it's even worse when he's as skilled at scoring as Pau.

^ I think his over passing shows in his scoring efficiency, honestly.

It might also show in his overall on/off numbers, but I'm not sure. Haven't looked.

^^my larger point is that having your center, who is as skilled as Pau is in the post, passing out of that position is NOT a good thing..... regardless of stats. Putting pressure on the defense is what it's all about. Taking it strong to the hoop is key to that. Once it's established you can then react to the defenses reaction (doubling the post) but to do it as a reflex reaction (which is what Pau does) isn't a good thing because we fail to establish the advantage he has in the post first....

I got it. And I agree. I was just suggesting that that aspect of his game shows up in the stats, both in terms of his passing number and elsewhere. Or at least I think it does.

BTW, it might also be that Gasol doing what he does is part of what enables so many of Kobe's missed inside shots to be rebounded by LA. I'm not sure about that. I'm just speculating.

I think my overall point about Gasol is that I'm dubious that he's going to be "reclaiming" anything. He'll be our Center because that's all we have.

He's not reclaiming anything; Pau is what he is at this point in his career...I'm not expecting much of a difference then what we've witnessed the last 3 years with him...

pau has to be a center from now to the end of his career. he can't match up with today's lineups at the 4 spot and he doesn't do enough to take advantage of smaller guys guarding him.

however, if he's healthy this year, i expect him to be around 17 and 9. he won't protect the rim, but maybe he'll increase his trade value enough to get something in return at the deadline. otherwise, i'd be okay with bringing him back at a highly reduced rate next season. probably 5M being what he's worth if he looks like he has the last 2 seasons.

If Pau can stay healthy he will be a 13 to 15 PPG guy grabbing 10 rebounds or so in 30 to 34 minutes a game. Pretty good for NBA centers but horrid for 20 Million.

It isn't that I don't LIKE Gasol..... not the case at all. His "Value" is the problem. He's not capable of carrying a team anymore yet he's making 25% more than LeBron.

Re-signing him for that contract wasn't the smartest thing we've done.

I don't think that's fair to say.. He was still a very good asset on that contract up until the veto.. If Stern didn't decide to play god we're sitting on a CP3/Kobe/Dwight big 3 & salivating over the possibility of Kobe taking a paycut in 2015 when we have a shot at Love & LMA.

He folded against Dallas the year befor that and has been not worth 19+ million ever. Getting paid the 3rd most in the league isn't what a number 2 should ever be.... It's the front offices fault more than it is Pau's. he had his two best seasons just befor the contract and cashed in.

Hold on you honestly think he's only worth 5 million? Are you crazy?

Even at his age, with his problems, the dude is a better basketball player than David West who got twice that. Gasol is still worth around 8-10 million on a short term contract. How many legit 7 footers in this league have his diversified scoring ability, passing ability, and Championship mettle? None.

I know that I, and others, have built scenarios where he stays for 5 million or some such thing, but he'd be taking a big discount to stay where he loves and to be on a (hopefully) championship team.

I'm not expecting Gasol to be better than he has the last two years either, but the last two years he's worth definitely more than 5 million dollars; just not 20 million.

I think that at $10M per year, plenty of teams would still be happy to have Gasol for a couple of seasons.

^^That's a fair salary for what he brings at this point in time. I might go a little lower if we re-sign him however because of the fact he didn't really earn about 7M a year of his current salary. 3 years, 24 Million with a team option for the 3rd and a very cheap buy-out clause in case of significant injury.

I dont know what to think of Pau...hes coming off two knee surgeries. He cant really defend consistently anymore. He has a super elite game once in a while on offense but the only reliable part is his passing. We'll see

This is his last chance to prove if he still has enough game left offensively. With Dwight gone he'll be the focus of the offense in the post once again.

Is this a "loose ....." moment? :man9:
For what it's worth, the Lakers also clinched the Pacific Division, an achievement Bryant dismissed by saying "We don't hang divisions." No, only the big NBA championship banners are considered wall-worthy for the Lakers.
