Ft. Worth Star-Telegram: Karl Malone, the NBA's second-leading all-time scorer, committed Thursday to sign next week with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to his agent, Dwight Manley, who told several news sources.
The New York Times reported that Malone, who will turn 40 this month, will sign a one-year contract for the $1.5 million veteran minimum.
Malone follows veteran guard Gary Payton, a nine-time All-Star who announced Tuesday that he will sign with the Lakers. They will join Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal to give the Lakers one of the most star-studded starting lineups in NBA history.
Malone, who averaged 20.6 points per game last season, has 36,374 career points, second behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who scored 38,387.
The moves will likely put pressure on the Mavericks to upgrade their talent, probably starting with Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning.
But Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, said there's no reason to worry about the Lakers
