Nick Young Discussion:Kobe= Batman, Nick= Boy Wonder (57)

I wonder how many minutes he'll get this season. I see about 20 max a game. I haven't been able to really look at the new roster though (in and out of the hospital) so if someone could break down what might happen with him minutes wise I'd appreciate it I don't get much time on the net these days.

Even though Nick is a starting caliber player, he's much better served off the bench because of his ability to create and score. So, even though Wes Johnson will start, Nick should be playing 25+mpg whether at SF or SG.

With Wes as the token starter I see no reason Swaggy won't get 30+ MPG. The biggest question imo is will Kobe respect Scott enough to let his minutes be limited? If so Swaggy could have just as big of a role as he did last season.

Let's 3-peat with him as 6th man so we can get his jersey retired :man1:

I'm thinking you meant shot?... I'm with you on the defense. He's got the tools to be an adequate defender, no more excuses!

But he's still very likable.

Young calling himself the boy wonder to Kobe's Batman..... Here's a little glimpse into the next practice.....

He's always been a solid leaper. In fact for his size he's pretty darn athletic. I remember during the year the Laker talkers like Ireland and Trudell were all talking about how he has great movement for a 6'7" - 6'8" guy.

If he gets around 30mpg again I hope he's able to track down more of the loose ball rebounds, and get a few more rebounds in general. Rebounding = wins in my mind and improving on his 2.5 or so a game would be nice.

He's fun to watch though I hope Kobe and he can play well together this season.

Curious of everyones thoughts, any chance N-Y0 starts alongside Kobe? Lin can drive&play P&N roll, Kobe can do the same plus one of the 2 GOATS at post up game, I think that sets up N-Y0 w/ a boat load of open looks at the 3 point line/open jumpers or cuts in the lane? My expectations for Nash are none, if he gives us something great&if not thats what it is BUT, if Clarkson continues to flash potential..along w/Henry/Johnson/Kelly IMOPO thats still has potential for offensive efficiency.

I'd rather Young and Kobe limit their time together. Young fits much better as our scoring punch off the bench.

Down the stretch in he 4th when we need to score (maybe on defense as well if Scott can implement some team defense out there)... that's the only time I want to see both Kobe and Nick playing together.

Yeah I just feel like their talents are too similar and of the two certainly Young's effectiveness would be limited.

I'd rather not see Young start. He and Kobe next to each other mean below average effort on D from our two wing defenders and a bit of trigger happiness. There's room for one guy like that on the floor at a time.

Same here. And I think Nick Young already knows his role is going to be as lead scorer off the bench. I believe he's talked about it this off season. It's a role he's perfectly suited for.

Hopefully Johnson can improve his D at starting SF this season. If he can do that we may be in pretty good shape. I think Scott will emphasize the importance of him doing so. Last year I was high on pushing X to be a starter at three, but after seeing him in action last year, I think he's better suited off the bench with Swaggy despite the fact that they are both scorers. With him and Swaggy we have real scoring punch there and we'll need it.

Agreed.

Wes needs to be a 3 and D guy. He's a good defender but I want to see him elevate to one of the best defenders in the game. At the very least he's got the physical tools and should have a chip on his shoulder. On O, he really just needs to be able to consistently hit the open 3 and then read the open lanes and slash.

Im not trying to be a debbie downer and am optimist prime over here, but youre really going to bet on him doing so?

Look I agree with yall BUT I believe we have to find a way to make it work for the both of them together&maybe go into a zone type D sometimes based on certain matchups because what if Kobe plays 30-40 minutes a game again.

I think Wes has the tools to be a good defender, and he shot 36.9%, which is solid. I think he needs to vastly perform his consistency as a defender before he can be called a D&3 guy. I'd call him a 2.5 now - not quite 3 and no D.

I actually love our bench and I think they're going to be similar to last year in terms of effectiveness.

Nash or Clarkson (actually it'll probably be Kobe playing backup PG more than Clarkson)
Henry
Young
Randle
Davis

That team has a LOT of talent, a LOT of athleticism, and a LOT of room to grow. If you can get Henry and Young to play some defense on the perimeter, Davis is a good rim protector and Randle has shown some good help defense in the limited time we've seen. They could be a ton of fun to watch.
