Odom: Clips are deeper than championship Lakers

Postby JSM on Fri Sep 28, 2012 10:17 pm

Arash Markazi of ESPN wrote: Los Angeles Clippers forward Lamar Odom says he thinks the current Clippers are the deepest team he has ever been on, and yes, that includes the Los Angeles Lakers teams he was on that went to three straight NBA Finals and won back-to-back titles.

"No," Odom said Friday when asked if he has ever been on a team as deep as this season's Clippers. "I've been on good teams. I've been on a team that went to the Finals three years in a row. You have to be pretty good to get to the Finals. But championships aren't won by just talking about a team and looking at a roster. We've all seen good rosters before and teams that we think should win, but this team is built to compete against the best teams in the NBA. If we were to play a seven-game series right now against the best teams in the NBA, I would expect us to compete."

Odom was hesitant to mention the Lakers by name and almost went out of his way to not to say what team his former Lakers teammates were on when he talked about them.

"I spoke to a guy named Derek Fisher, one of the captains of my old teams, last night," Odom said. "And we just talked about winning and the mindset of winning. We spoke for about 45 minutes. Some of that conversation, I'm going to pass on to these guys as soon as we head into the locker room because it is a mindset and there's a certain way that winners think on and off the court."

When Odom was asked why he was hesitant to mention the Lakers by name and if he hated his former team, he laughed and shook his head.

"No, you'd be a fool to hate what you love," Odom said. "But it's out of respect for this team to not mention where you once were. We expect to play and win here so you have to be aware of your surroundings and who you represent now."

Odom said he called Fisher as he routinely does with many of his former Lakers teammates.

"I call all the guys that I've won with, to still pick their brains," Odom said. "I've learned from the best, some of the top coaches and top players and top winners and I've learned from all of them."

Odom was traded to the Clippers on June 30 in a three-team trade that sent Mo Williams to the Utah Jazz and a Utah trade exception to the Dallas Mavericks. His 50 games in Dallas last season were nothing short of a disaster after the Lakers traded Odom to Dallas after their trade for Chris Paul fell through. Odom and Pau Gasol were a part of the Paul deal but, unlike Gasol, Odom wanted to be dealt after the trade was nixed.

Odom shot just 35 percent from the field and averaged a career-low 6.6 points for the Mavericks last season before the two parted ways before the end of the season.

"Sometimes when we go through certain things, other things we've been through in the past might come up and resurface," Odom said. "This summer I've learned a lot about myself. I've been through a lot and I've learned how to channel my energy and my thought and how I think the right way. I've become a lot stronger over the last 12 months. I've been through a lot. I've lost some of the close people to me, buried a child, won championships and got married in front of the world."

Now that he's back in Los Angeles and back with the team that drafted him over 13 years ago, Odom says he believes he will regain the Sixth Man of the Year form he had with the Lakers two seasons ago.

"Sometimes in order to do what we want and do what we expect of ourselves and make good decisions, we have to be in that happy place," Odom said. "You have to be in the right place mentally and I'm in that place. I'm just going get the ball off the glass, eat the glass, and bring it up the court."

1 - 15, the Clippers are deeper. He's right in that respect. However, you can't put 15 on the court at once. Still a game of 5 on 5. I'll take our starting 5, and our 8 who will see the majority of minutes, over the Clippers and any other team.

Your team needs to have reasonable depth to win the title but the playoffs are more about your top players than a deep bench ... CP3-Griffin and whoever is their best 3rd player aren't good enough to outplay the Lakers, OKC and Heat big3/4

I hope Odom has a great season. If he redeems himself with the Clippers this year, he will have come full circle.

I like Odom, but is he going to be getting decent minutes though?

Either way it must suck being a Toe Nail Clipper, especially when you've already experienced what its like to play for the Lakers.

Will probably get most of his minutes at the 5 ... Jordan, Hollins and Turiaf isn't a reliable rotation ...

Clippers will probably play a higher tempo than last season with LO at the 5

Good luck on D with a combo of Ginger and LO in the paint though

They have a lot of wing depth I'll give him that, better defenders in the PG, SG and SF positions. Frontcourt outside Blake isn't threatening at all

PG CP3/Bledsoe
SG Billups/Jamal Crawford/Willie Green
SF Caron Butler/ Grant Hill/Matt Barnes

thats a really really good group of players. 3 point shooting becomes shaky but their defense and IQ has improved significantly in the perimeter compared to last year

They added stiff bigs like Turiaf and Ryan Hollins but that wont help. Lamar will only play 12 mins a game behind Blake and thats it, their C and PFs are not reliable at all defensively

K Mart and Evans were more valuable as bigs on the bench ... they could give them good minutes on the boards and on D ... Turiaf and Hollins are absolutely garbage ... assuming Eandre Jordan plays about 28 min , good luck with giving Turiaf/Hollins 20 min a game .. that's why LO will probably see minutes at the 5

Clippers are easily the deepest team. But they lack a real number 2 guy and unless Blake comes back a totally different player or Odom and their bench can contribute in big time mins, I see too many holes to win.

Jordan and Griffin are way too one dimensional.

we know Lamar. Clippers can't ever be and won't ever be the Lakers. You can play in the same city and arena, but your heart is in a different place.

Lakers championship teams during Kobe's career have never been deep. The non-championship ones may have been (think the Del Harris/Shaq years). I mean the 3-peat had AC Green & Horace Grant as starting PF. During the second set (Kobe/Pau) Drew was always hurt. Shannon Brown was the backup PG. Not exactly deep.

I feel sorry for LO It's Like a Laker fan being banned from supporting the Lakers, I think He hoped Lakers would pick him up but not happened unfortunetly, He wanted to live & play in Los Angeles and the clippers were His only option, I still miss Him playing for Us

I don't. He's the enemy now. Lamar worked well as a glue guy for us only after years of Phil experimenting with how to use him optimally. He's a player who needs the ball in his hand, and needs to play close to the basket. Even then his output is too inconsistent to count on. And the glare of high expectations he does even worse.

Nah man... come on, it's the Clippers. Something will go wrong, you'll see.

I wholeheartedly agree. No matter how deep you are, which they are crazy deep, only X amount of players really get the minutes.

I find that a bit ironic..... He's the key to their depth and he was beyond horrible last year..... So is adding him helping or hurting that depth?.... I'm not sure we will see the Odom that played for us ever again....

I don't care either, but I just don't see him coming anywhere near what he did for us again... That was a unique opportunity for him to handle the ball and initiate..... that isn't happening on the Clips with their point guards. That make him a jump shooter, post player and finisher to be effective on offense..... even in his prime those things were not strengths. The one thing that I noticed last year was that he has slowed down quite a bit physically.... that isn't going to change a year later I'm afraid.

He'll give them some good games and some stinkers like he did for us..... the good games won't be nearly as good as they here because he's going to be a Back-up PF for a team with a marquis PF that's young and will play 38+ minutes a game.....
