Our 3-pt percentage

Does anyone know what it is? I think we went from being the most horrible (last season) to one of the best this season. Can anyone look that up? I have to say, everyone has become a shooter lol.

9th overall at 37.5%.

not too bad. we were like 28th last season weren't we?

Last year 25th overall, 32.6%.

Well, they do have Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen who are BOTH hitting over 50% of their threes. On top of that LeBron is actually hitting a good percentage of his threes this year too. They have put together a good outside shooting team, it would seem. (Source)

Miami hit the jackpot with the pick up of Ray Allen. Without him, I wouldn't pick them to repeat. Now it's theirs to lose.

IDK about top 5; I would way top 10-15 which is a considerate improvement over last year. We added two shooters; Jamison and Meeks, Morris, Ron, & Duhon have shot well. I can see that trend continuing if we continue to get clean looks in rhythm. I forgot to add in Nash who is one of the all time great shooters from everywhere on the floor.

I still think we need to add another shooter or two. A SF that come in and shoot & defend off the bench would be great. Add in with the improvement and shooters we added and then I can see us landing in the top 5...

In the 6 games he has coached we are shooting 65-157 (41.4%) from three and that includes the fluke Indiana game where we shot 6-28 and couldn't get anything to go down.

Keep in mind we don't even have Nash or Blake out there, both guys who hit the three at a 40% clip. This team has shooters, they just weren't being utilized properly.

You make good points. One is is clear is that they will get open looks because of the attention that Dwight gets in the paint.

Mathematics is a formidable foe..... Reversion to the mean is a more likely scenario here.

For instance do you thing Kobe is going to have the highest FG% of his career at his age?

I'd say we improve at shooting 3's but I hope to god we take less than 15 a game or it won't matter what we shoot.... we'll be just like the other MDA teams when it comes to the playoffs....

Top 5 is a possibility. We do add one of the best facilitators and shooters in NBA history to our lineup you know

When we won the championship in 2009 we took 17 3s a game and hit them at a 45% clip so yes 3 point shooting is a weapon this team can use. We do have two very strong interior players at their positions you know in Kobe and Howard and another guy who's semi-reliable inside in MWP

In 2009 we ranked 19th in the league shooting 3's at 36.1%

We also shot 77% from the line that year.... you predicting a top 5 spot there too?...

You were concerned if we take a high amount of 3s we wont be successful. Well we did in 2009

it should go up when nash and even maybe blake come back. i expect miami's to even out bc i dont think ray will shoot 50% for the season

You didn't mention playoffs. I thought the discussion was team 3 point % overall.

Shooting low percentage shots will be the downfall of this team I'm afraid and falling in love with outside shots is easy to do without coaching.... unfortunately our coaching encourages it. I agree that it's great to see them falling but teams that rely on that don't go far.....

The comparison to 2009 doesn't seem complete without free throw shooting which is also very important in close playoff games. Low percentage shots from the outside and an all but assured low percentage from the line is not a good combination.

We've seen shooting outbursts like this before and they usually fade.... I hope Meeks can hit between 36% and 40% and Nash will shoot around that but I wouldn't expect anyone else to threaten the 40% mark for the season. Too many streak shooters on this team.

With Howard and Gasol we should take the majority of our shots in the paint on a nightly basis and use the 3 ball to open it up. I seriously hope we don't start seeing the "transition 3" as a part of our designed attack. Kind of defeats the purpose of having bigs that have offensive games.....

To which I wrote that post above about how we won in the 09 playoffs shooting a lot of 3s...MDA or not this team can win critical games while attempting a high volume of 3 balls. We didn't have any exceptional 3 point shooters that year, guys just got hot and hit open shots from opportunities created by Kobe and our interior passing. It came in the flow of the offense...just like how our guys doing right now. That Indiana game on Tuesday they weren't jacking shots up left and right, they took shots in the flow of the offense and unfortunately it just didn't fall...it happens but for the most part our 3 point shooting has been exceptional since MDA came on board.

I have the same expectations here as our 09 team...MWP, Meeks, Duhon, Jamison aren't Ray Allen but I can see them hitting an adequate percentage of it to keep the defense honest and space the floor to let Kobe/Howard do their thing 1 on 1.

We have our 2 20 point scorers and we have the necessary role players to relieve them of the congestion in the paint.



And oh...all this without Steve Nash and we all know what he can do

^^your discounting the 5 to 7 points a game we will be leaving on the free throw line this year over 2009....

You're also discounting the system we will be playing.

In close games in the playoffs that is a huge disadvantage that we will need to overcome and IMO shooting low percentage outside shots isn't the way to do it.

San Antonio tried to make that change last year and dominated in the regular season hitting 3's all over the place.... playoff time came around and poof.....

We'll see.

MDA's system is just fine, it makes it easy for our best players and so far Dwight and Kobe have been just fine. Free throw shooting was an issue with Shaq and we still won anyways, thats why we have Kobe/Nash. Last 5-6 minutes of the game I can see those guys doing the majority of scoring/facilitating and Dwight wont get the ball unless its a dunk or rebound. Its not like we're gonna be running up and down the court like Phoenix did and jack up 3 pointers at will, thats what they did...ours is based on letting Kobe do his thing and when he draws a double find the open shooter... same for Howard, if he's one on one go to the basket, if not pass it to the open shooter

As much credit as the triangle deserves, we didn't utilize it during critical junctures of games. We just put Kobe at the mid post and let him shoot mid range J's, if a double comes over find the open man. Simple basketball

This team resorted to several non triangle methods on its way to a championship

- Kobe/ Pau pick and roll
- Fisher/ Kobe pick and roll (Game 3 in Boston comes to mind)


We'll be fine

We have the most talented team in the NBA. Its about putting players in the right position where they can play to their strengths. Its simple basketball and MDA recognizes that.

Pretty sure Roos meant over the course of an entire season. A small sample size like that isn't going to count for as much.

Each season is completely different and stats are a record of what happened..... "predictive"? not without context or understanding the variable in play when the stats were compiled and how they actually apply to the variables now.

I don't mind us shooting a high number of 3s if that's what the defense is giving us. This is the kind of team where we'll blow out teams, and we'll also get blown out from time to time when the shots don't fall.

Roos does have a good point about FTs--we'll see more games like the Indiana game in the playoffs (yes, ref jobbing and all), so we just gotta hope to make them when they count and not be so lackadaisical. Maybe put in Hill and Jamison every time Howard hits the FT line.
