About Gasol: have to figure no major FA signing is taking place this summer. Maybe a good young mid-level player who can be part of a contending team down the road, but that is likely it. Mid-level guy, Kobe, draft pick, Nash, Sacre, that's the team so far. In this context, it would probably be okay to sign Gasol for 1 year at $9m, maybe a 2nd year as a team option, maybe throw in a buyout clause for the 2nd year if necessary to sweeten the deal, don't think Gasol is going to do any better on the open market. Lakers get somebody serviceable for next year and cap space after that.
Pau needs to go. His defense alone has cost us for far too long. He gives up a 20 PER to opposing centers, our defense gives up 114 PPG with him on the court vs. off at 108 PPG.
To get back on top, we need to get back to defense and rebounding. Pau does neither effectively anymore. And offensively we only improve 1.4 PPG with him on and off the court. The benefits do not outweigh the negatives for him anymore. He needs to move on, we need to move on.
