He was only traded at the time because he zone so far out Phil struck him in the playoffs.

He will get more love than recent years sure, and I wouldn't not be shocked to see him retire here now to clean up some or mess for the new regime without Jerry West or Buss. They may very well try to give him and Kobe decent deals this hammer wi whoever the add on and try to retire him here to restore some luster and class to the image

Pau Gasol yesterday morning when asked about Dwight Howard: "I haven't called. Calls are expensive."

Didn't see this posted yet

Sources: Lakers will keep Gasol
Ramona Shelburn, July 6th 2013

While the Los Angeles Lakers were understandably disappointed when Dwight Howard called to tell them he was leaving to sign with the Houston Rockets late Friday afternoon, there was a silver lining.

Now that Howard is gone, there will be no talk or discussion about using the amnesty provision on forward Pau Gasol anymore, a source with knowledge of the team's thinking told ESPNLosAngeles.com Friday night.

Gasol will likely slide over from power forward to center and be featured in that role, as he was on the 2009 Lakers team that defeated Howard and the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals. It remains to be see who will fill the power forward role -- Metta World Peace, Jordan Hill or rookie Ryan Kelly -- but the Lakers feel Gasol is a much more natural fit as a center in coach Mike D'Antoni's offense than he was as a power forward.

More on the Lakers

For more news, notes and analysis of the Lakers, check out the Lakers Index. Blog

Had Howard re-signed with the Lakers, Gasol -- who will make $19.3 million in the final year of his contract -- was a candidate to be let go via the amnesty provision as the Lakers look to deal with their luxury tax issues. No firm decision had been made, the source insisted, as the team's preference was to look for ways to keep Gasol. But now that decision has been taken care of with Howard leaving.

It's an ironic twist because of the way Gasol and D'Antoni clashed during the season. D'Antoni benched Gasol in the fourth quarter of games within his first week on the job, then moved him into a sixth man role. Now though, he will play a key role in the system and his passing and playmaking ability will be featured.

The Lakers could still use their amnesty provision on Kobe Bryant, Steve Blake or World Peace, of course. And they will likely weigh using it on World Peace, but no decision has been made, according to the source.

I don't see Kobe being amnestied unless he he asks out. We'd regret that immediately. MWP, amnesty hIm, and if not him, Blake, sure why not.

The End of this tweet makes sense and isn't the only thing I'd do it.

@ramonashelburne: Lakers can still amnesty Kobe, Blake or Metta. I'm told they're still weighing that with MWP
. I still want MWP amnestied.

Amnesty Kobe and move on, he is a liablility already since on one will join him to play with him specially any superstar level. If I were Kobe I would have retired now and seek the Lakers FO job to work as assistance GM under Mitch or Coach the Lakers.

How much is the tax threshold this upcoming season? We need to get below it so that there will be no more 128$M roster mediocrity...

I know the Lakers are going to fill the roster between now and next year but if they amnesty MWP, they would get under the Lux tax threshold. Haha. Funny change of events. Lakers went from a projected 85 million in tax to probably nothing to a few million. Maybe that's why the lakers didnt give a crap to cater to DH12

Mods, is there any way we can set this site up that if you type the words "amnesty" and "Kobe" in succession that it will automatically log you out of your account? Should check up on that.

Although I know we won't get very far with Pau, we won't get far anywhere with anyone we get with him anyway.

Let him finish out a Laker, it's a big expiring anyway. He more than deserves it. Yes, he's had those bad seasons and post seasons, but the years before that wee glorious.

Anyways, we need a center back for Pau, no team is going to switch it for Pau.

Just saw a tweet from LakersNation talking about how everyone always expected Dwight Howard to be the next great Laker big man, we actually had him here all along- Pau. In all honesty, I never thought about like that until now, but it's true. No. 16 has to be in those rafters one day.

Hopefully this motivates Pau to get into great shape and come into camp with a chip on his shoulder. Playing Center means a lot more post touches, which is what he wanted.

pau has 1 season to prove his worth. he not sharing the paint anymore and is the lakers only real big man. its him and kobe again and i expect a lot of old phil jackson triangle plays between the 2 when they need a point. he'll have to be aggressive and know that hes the #2 option and shouldnt have to facilitate to anyone when he has the ball in the paint. he has the advantage 9/10 times with his skill IF hes healthy.

lets hope he comes back 100% healthy and shows his dominance like his did during the olympics last summer before knee injury.

People can criticize his play and we all know he isn't worth as much as he is making, but he has given his all to the Lakers and helped us win 2 championships. He will always be a Laker for life Whether he plays good or bad next season, thank you Pau for giving your all for this team.

Our defense is going to be godawful next year. Let's not pretend any different. With Nash at 1, Pau at 5 and Meeks starting at 2 it's going to be nothing short of horrifying. Even when Kobe comes back it won't be any better. So that side of the ball will just be terrible.

However, D' Antoni never gave a damn about that anyway. And let's face it, our offense looked at its best when Dwight was sidelined with that busted shoulder and Pau played center. He's just a much better option down low because he actually has post moves and he's such an insanely good passer. I wish we could bring back Jamison to play 4 actually. His cuts off ball were outstanding and Pau got him great looks.

If we're going Antoni we might as well go all the way Antoni.

I've seen this a couple of times.... It will be interesting to see it actually. I think a lot of our players believed they didn't need to step it up on that end because Howard was there. They did the same thing when Bynum was there. Always talking about the "anchor" and all that.... Now they will be exposed.... I think we may see some "team" on that end for the first time in a while. Are they capable of being better? Yeah... we were actually worse with Howard last year than we were with Bynum the year before.... so this isn't a "linear" thing it seems....
