Pau Thread: Surgery a success; now rehab & rest for 12 weeks

Healthy Anderson Varejao is a high energy guy who fights for position and has a pretty decent jump shot with underrated passing. The problem is that he can't stay healthy and Cleveland wants the world for him.

2. Varejao while nice.....but we have a similar player in Hill. And much cheaper too.

I haven't seen Ryan Anderson playing D this season but I know Magic fans weren't too sad to see him go because of his playoff performance and defense last season.

Varejao is similar but he's still much better than Hill. He's not the same 20 minute a night hustle player he was when LeBronze James was there. This is no knock on Hill, but Varejao is a much more skilled player at this point. Varejao is the type of big man that can contain the pick and roll. Hill doesn't have that experience yet and his coach won't be helping him with that any time soon either. Varejao is also a much better passer.
Get healthy Varejao with an athletic wing defender and I'd be confident the half court d would be at least top 5.

stop with the nonsense, Varjao contains the PnR because he gets help when he helps or shows high on the PG, Bynum and now Howard face the same problem, when they show NOBODY else helps them with their man. Bosh/Chandler/Noah all defend PnR aggressively and show hard because they KNOW somebody got their back when they're out there challenging the PG, I can gurantee you anyone of these guys I listed plus Varjao will have the same dam problem defending PnR if they're on this team.

Jordan Hill is a great choice.

as a starter? I like him off the bench and not much more. I agree though, at this point, a Howard/Hill front court w/Jamison and MWP coming of the bench is not bad... but outside of Ron, not very tough. Hill is also at best a decent defender and given all the more mobile PF's in the NBA, he'd have a tough time. Jamison is a huge defensive liability.

While PF's prototypes can come in many forms (Ryan Anderson/Milsap/Smith/Aldridge/Odom/David Lee) the person we now have at the spot is the worst style for our system and surrounding roster.

Dwight needs space on the block, Nash needs a guy who can pick and roll/pop aggressively, Kobe needs a guy who he can believe in down the stretch, MDA needs energy/passion/ability to move and shoot.

Pau IMO is doing none of the above. Maybe it's age and health, maybe it's heart but he's horrid right now. He was too slow for Spencer Hawes and too weak for Thaddeus Young. IMO that say's a lot.

A few months ago I would never have said this, but Josh Smith is a now a pipe dream package.

Varejao is not going to get abused (with our without an athletic wing defender) as much as Pau does if Dwight is backing him up. You think Varejao won't back Dwight up better than Pau does? stop with the nonsense, Pau gets completely lost on rotations sometimes and he's the one giving guys straight line drives on pick and rolls to the basket because he doesn't have the footspeed to keep up. Varejao has much better defensive awareness and he'd rotate to Dwight's man when Dwight helps and vice versa.

Uh...some guy said we need an athletic 4 that fights hard on every play then he went on to say Ryan Anderson was ideal. I don't dispute Ryan Anderson would be a good option but I don't think he's the ideal athletic 4 the guy was describing. When I think of an athletic 4 that fights hard on every play, I don't think of Ryan Anderson, I think of Anderson Varejao.

Again, if you think Varejao would have the same trouble as Pau does with the pick and roll, even with Dwight Howard backing him up, well you're entitled to your opinion, even if it is nonsensical. No need to cop out of the argument with the "Pau's worthless and has no trade value" card. The guy was speaking hypothetically about a Pau replacement and so was I. Nobody here said anything about either guy being a realistic option.

Plantar fascitis or whatever He sucks healthy or injured, too bad because i realy like him and want him to do well.

When I was his age, I was still able to dunk. And I am 5-9. He should be dunking that even if he is sitting in a chair, using his butt cheeks to propel himself upward.... WTF? I've always supported Pau, but come on now... that was so lazy.

When was the last time he had a good game? Seriously. He had a good 30 second span to close out the Knicks on Christmas, and his line for that game was decent, but he still had several WTF moments. His days of 20 and 12 are long gone. 10 and 8 is more realistic, while giving up 20 and 10 to his man.

Bumping this so people can see that, Pau in the post =/= maximizing Pau.

Our defense would be so much better if we made that Josh Smith deal. Between his athleticism & speed & friendship with Dwight, you can bet he would help when D12 leaves his man & there wouldn't be staredowns from D12 every time he doesn't.. The days of needing 2 legit starting bigs are over. We need speed & defense.
