Phil Jackson interview about Lakers/Dwight/Zone D/Post Ups

From the Lakers’ perspective, this means that if they miss the 2013 playoffs and land in the lottery, they retain their pick. If they make the playoffs, then they will enter the draft with the worst pick from among their own, the Cavs’, the Heat’s and the Kings’ picks.

As a result of this trade, the Lakers’ pick had been partially spoken-for, but they still retained control of it if it turned out to be one of the top 14. This meant they were free to trade it again, as long as it was traded on the condition that it was one of the top 14 picks. They could even trade their pick if it wasn’t one of the top 14, so long as the trade specified that they were giving up whatever pick Cleveland left them with.

That’s exactly what they did.

July 11, 2012: The Lakers traded a 2013 first-round pick, a 2015 first-round pick, two second-round picks (in 2013 and 2014) and cash to Phoenix for Steve Nash.

In a trade that was widely viewed as a coup for the Lakers, the team acquired one of the premier point guards of the millennium (albeit the 38-year-old-version) for what was thought to be a collection of odds-and-ends. Again, we want to focus on the 2013 pick here.

The Lakers essentially agreed to give the Suns whatever pick they end up with in 2013. If the team misses the playoffs and ends up in the lottery (with one of the top 14 picks), the pick goes directly to Phoenix. If the Lakers somehow make the playoffs, then the Cavs still get the first shot at it, and the Lakers will end up with the worst pick from among the four aforementioned teams. But then whichever pick the Lakers end up with would go to Phoenix.

Well thanks for the correction....I thought the pick was ours as long as it falls in the top 14. Its protected only towards the Cavs.

My bad.

So to clarify, if it lands in top 14, Cavs can't swap out their least favorable of picks to us via the Sessions trade, but then our pick goes to the Suns. If we land outside the top 14, Cavs can swap their least favorable with ours and that then goes to the Suns. If the Cavs choose not to swap, then our pick goes to the Suns.

Were talking about our draft possibilities.... :man5:
Before long, someone recognized Phil Jackson sitting in the front seat, and then the rocks began to fly. Revelers pelted the bus and shook it, mocking the Lakers at their lowest moment.

It was painful,” Lakers forward Pau Gasol(notes) said. “It is a feeling that I want to keep in my mind for every single minute that I’m out there playing them.

I see this thread took a weird turn :man10:

Thank you Phil for finally coming out and saying what we all want to say to the Lakers front office. Mike has got to go. And Phil needs to be brought in and coach this team the way its meant to be coached and used. Dwight needs to be used in the post like Shaq was used for all those years. Not to mention we need Phil's calming effect to deal with all these egos on this team.

Watching Phil speak at Jerry's memorial, watching Kobe speak about Phil there, adding in these comments, it's even harder to believe we didn't hire Phil back. 'Antoni is a clown and a joke of a coach in comparison, not worthy of representing this great franchise.

Yet as I watched him Monday, I could not help think how little it mattered and how right he is. He is not fading into the shadows. He does not know how to go out that way.[.]

But Phil said it himself: he really doesn't want to coach anymore. He would have given this one a shot, but not because he loved coaching anymore. If he really doesn't feel like coaching, why would we go to him to coach?

If he were to be brought back into the Lakers' organization it wouldn't be as a coach anymore. As hard as that is for us to accept, we should. Just like the 2011 Lakers, asking Phil for one more shot when he really didn't want to would have just tarnished his legacy and ours as a duo.

I'd love him back as a VP figure. Let Jim take his father's role and fade into the background while allowing the organization to run itself. That'd be a dream. Hire Shaw as the Head Coach and allow Phil to run things as the VP. Jim Buss gets final say, but he'd allow the employees to do their jobs.
