ESPN Radio reported two days ago that the Lakers would have to go about 39-21 the rest of the way just to make the playoffs. So I did a quick bit of research to see what the 8th seeded team's record was in the West for the past five seasons.

2011-2012 Dallas and Utah finished 36-30 (extrapolated to an 82 game winning % of 55% or 45 wins.)
2010-2011 New Orleans and Memphis finished 46-36
2009-2010 Oklahoma City and San Antonio finished 50-32
2008-2009 Utah finished 48-34
2007-2008 Denver finished 50-32

The 8th seeded team posted an average of 48 wins per season (48-34) to garner the 8th seed in the West.

If history once again repeats itself (and it usually does), in order for the Lakers to reach 48 wins they would have to play .650 ball and go 39-21 the rest of the way just to MAKE the playoffs.

With the soft part of the schedule behind us, that' s a tall order. We'll have to turn things around quickly.

It's like I said, they don't have time to wait anymore. That period is over, 22 games in and our record is so bad that they don't have the luxury of waiting any longer to get it going. They've likely already screwed themselves out of HCA for the entire playoffs so the best we can hope for is that they play well enough to get the 5th or 6th seed and peak at the right time so they can at least get to the WCF.

I had that thought process of waiting and being patient with this team. I've changed my thought process not only have hearing this stat but watching Memphis, Clippers, Spurs, and OKC get off to just a hot start. It amazes me that we're in the position and we still haven't made a move to upgrade our backcourt situation.

We have Duhon starting and Morris as his backup. Duhon, while filling in credibly is a third string PG on a championship caliber roster; Morris isn't fit to be on any other NBA team. This is our starting backcourt. With Nash's situation unclear and Blake out until Feb, it's clear to me that we need an upgrade if we want to make a push to make the playoffs...

dallas needs to go 37-23 to make it.

minny needs to go 38-25 to make it.

utah needs to go 35-25 to make it.

my point: when you put it this way, it can sound daunting for a lot of teams. and those teams don't have two guys like nash and pau on the shelf.

i'm not guaranteeing anything, but this is all shock tactics from the media until we've played another 30 or so games. if the lakers are five games out of the playoffs with 25 to play, it's panic time. as it stands, they're two games out of a playoff spot and waiting on two allstars (and really, 40% of their anticipated rotation) to return.

If the Lakers are 5 games out of the playoffs with 30 to play, then it is NOT time to panic?

Considering we have to win 2 out of every 3 games going forward just to make the playoffs, then I think the time to panic is now.

I'm not sure how any of that is comforting. The 8th seed is almost a guaranteed loss in the first round against a team like SAS or OKC. I'd almost rather tank and miss the playoffs than waste time with that

We need at least the 6th seed to have a shot of making it out and they need to be playing like an elite team down the stretch too even if their record isn't great. If we get a decent seed and peak then anything can happen, a la 94-95 Rockets.

eh, this team is supposed to compete for a title, not make the second round. they're in a position where they're going to have to beat all those teams on the road, anyway. why not start at the top?

what i'm saying is that i don't see the difference between a 6 and an 8 seed. really, anything after 4 is a problem, and i'd prefer at least 2 or 3. those are highly unlikely unless someone ahead of the lakers has the same kind of injury problems they've had, so i've resigned myself to the lakers having to beat three good teams on the road should they make the playoffs.

at any rate, i'm not looking at target records until late january/early february. i'm just hoping the team starts developing some better habits...like tonight.
