Kareem played forever & was consistant as hell. Kobe, or LeBron have to keep scoring 20+ in their late 30's. Who knows how their roles may change, their offensive schemes. Just can't know.

In the next couple of years we'll have the privilege of watching him pass some all-time greats. I bet his personal goal is to pass MJ - and if his body and soul allow him, he has a chance @ Wilt and the Mailman for sure, then Kareem. I say Kobe retires #2, behind only the "Captain". Lebron won't play long enough.

Yea. Most likely below. We have about 26 games left in the season, he averages 27 a game. That comes out to be about 700 points. So yea, about the 16th spot by the end of the season.

The way you wrote it, it's almost certainly true. If he has more points, he's above. If he has fewer points, he's below. Only if he were tied would your statement not be true, at least as it reads straightforward.

I understand LeBron scores quite a bit, but look what Kobe and Iverson have had to do for years consistently to get where they're at. Kareem played for a long time, longer than anyone could have expected, and even in his twilight years he was scoring. I sincerely doubt that Kobe can pass him, and that's no insult to Kobe ( or LeBron). It's just extremely unlikely for anyone besides an extremely dominant* Center that can play for almost twenty years consistently to pass Kareem. I mean look at what Shaq has done in his career and he isn't going to be passing Cap. LeBron has a limited though improving offensive game, and until he can come up with a consistent mid-range/ long range (ex. Kobe/Jordan) he's going to hit a point where his averages are going to take a beating. Can he crack the top 20? Probably. Top 10? Maybe. Top 5? I doubt it.

*By dominant I mean he can score almost at will every night like Kareem could.

^What do you mean? He never said that career averages were unimportant. He just said getting top 5 and passing MJ would be amazing because it is quite the feat.

If Kobe maintains his 27.7 ppg for the remaining 25 games, he'll end up with 23893, good for 17th.

On another note, if Iverson maintains his 18.3 ppg for his remaining 27 games, he'll end up with 24452, staying in 16th.

It is interesting to look at the Lakers franchise records and see where he ranks amongst the greatest Lakers.
In 10 games he will pass Jerry West for second on the games played list.
He should pass Elgin Baylor for third in minutes played by the end of the season.
He ranks fourth in fgm. and third in fga.
Franchise leader in three's made and attempted.
Second in ftm and third in attempts
He recently moved into the top ten in rebounds.
Third in assists behind Magic and West.
Second in steals behind magic
Top ten in blocks, turnovers and fouls.
Sometime next season he will pass both Kareem and Jerry West for the franchise lead in points scored.

He'll definitely get Parish and Barkley this year, barring injury.

Next year, he should jump in front of Ewing, West, Miller and English (not sure about AI because he's still playing). In three years, he'll definitely be top 5 scoring all-time. I really can't see him breaking Kareem's record unless he plays another 8-9 years. If he does, he's got a great shot.

What he said. Seeing Kobe breaking Kareem's record is kinda hard... but he will be one of the top scorers ever, no question about it.

Kobe will pass Chuck just as the season winds down. then he and AI will start leapfrogging people the next few years. Shaq will crack top 5, but will then get bumped by Kobe or Kobe and AI. the leaps from there though become much more difficult...

no chance of Kobe or Lebron topping the Cap...they are not 7 footers who benefit from dunks and layups. and the game is different, you need size to compete, and size catches up to you. their athleticisim will wear on them...not saying its impossible. but i dont think Lebron can score 40,000 points with his frame the way it is.

as an aside, why dont total points in a season ever matter, its always based on PPG. yet when we measure the all time scoring leaders, its total points? seems contradictory to me. in fact, total points should always mean more then PPG. what good is a 30PPG average if you miss half the season (see TMAC)?

you need at least 1400 points to qualify...or 60+ games...as far as I remember.
