Porkins on the Lakers and Dwight

Porkins on the Lakers and Dwight

Darnell Mayberry of the Oklahoman wrote:Dwight Howard's chief rival over the years had little concern when he heard his old foe was changing teams and coming to the Western Conference.

“I just said it's time to go to work,” Thunder center Kendrick Perkins said about Howard joining the Lakers. “I knew the hype was going to be over there on that end and all that. But I'm glad the attention is off us because we're the type that likes to put our hard hats on and do stuff and keep it under the radar. And at the end of the day, when you look at the box score, Oklahoma won. That's the way we like to keep it.”

Not only is Perkins unfazed, but he also echoed several of his Thunder teammates who already have refuted the notion that the Lakers are now the team to beat in the West.

“We are the Western Conference champs,” Perkins said. “So at the end of the day, we're not chasing nobody except for the ring. We're chasing Miami to get a championship. It's no guarantee who is going to be where. But we earned the Western champs so we're not chasing the Lakers, we're chasing a championship and that's what it's about.”

Perkins and Howard developed a rivalry from their days battling in the East, Perkins with Boston and Howard with Orlando. The two played 24 times in the regular season and battled against one another in two playoff series. It was in those meetings that Perkins established a reputation for being the best low-post defender in basketball and the most capable center of slowing down Howard.

Now that Howard has joined Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash in L.A., Perkins figures to be more valuable than ever to the Thunder. It'll be Perkins' job to limit Howard this season, which could be vital if the Thunder has any plans on making a return trip to the NBA Finals.

“Yeah we've had our battles in the Eastern Conference but it's not too much of a big difference (with Howard in L.A.) because (Andrew) Bynum wasn't just a cakewalk by no means,” Perkins said. “We definitely got our hands full as a team but we're doing good.”

Perkins, undoubtedly the most vocal member of the Thunder, admitted that while the team prefers to fly under the radar it doesn't sit well with anyone in OKC that the Lakers are considered the team to beat. Kevin Durant, for example, might have concealed his true emotions when asked earlier this summer if he had any thoughts on the blockbuster trade and responded by saying: “Nah. I don't really care.”

Perkins is different.

“I'm a guy that will speak and tell you that I got a chip on my shoulder where KD might not tell you that he has one on his shoulder but he really do,” Perkins said. “Trust me, we're ready to get at it.”

After last year's heartbreaking Finals loss to Miami, the Thunder, Perkins said, is both more determined and better prepared to challenge for the championship this year.

“Now, we know what to expect,” Perkins said. “So it's less talking and more playing on my end. We know what to expect and we know what it takes. We know that it takes the little things and we'll be ready.”

Perkins points to the recent signings of coach Scott Brooks and Serge Ibaka, as well as the recovery of Eric Maynor from injury, as positives that took place for the Thunder this summer. Perkins says those developments will position the Thunder to be right back where it was last season — with or without his old nemesis now in Los Angeles.

“I don't like to brag and boast about what we got going on,” Perkins said. “But we'll see.”

Dude is delusional.

He's been to two Finals already. Shouldn't he know what it takes by now?

And I love this overblown rivalry. Howard has eaten Perkins up in one-on-one situations.

Reminds me of when we beat Boston for the second time in the season following our loss in the Finals and KG pounds his fist on the table at the post game presser and says "We're the champs, man".
"Come hell or high water we're gonna be there again. Its just something about the Lakers organization. Mitch is really, really good at it, he's really really good man...."

Don't matter what he says or what front he puts up. Fat or not, he still has a goat face.

The funny thing is, the DHoward trade to LA likely kept Perkins in OKC. He has no place on the court vs Miami, but OKC knows they can't get to Miami before getting past LA. Howard will get the best of Perkins, but imagine if OKC traded or amnestied him in favor of Harden? The league would probably call it after 2 games.

Fly under the radar?.... Someone needs to tell him that if you say you're flying under the radar in an interview.... you no longer are flying under the radar....

This guy's reputation is so far removed from his abilities it's truly amazing..... why is anyone even talking to him?

This guy is a liability for OKC. He, alongside Ibaka did absolutely nothing against the Heat. He is more or less on their roster to deal with two guys: Andrew Bynum, and Dwight Howard. I'm too lazy to pull up the numbers, but i'm pretty sure both of those guys have had their way with him over the last few years. He's not even a good defensive player when the refs aren't swallowing their whistles when Porkins is getting away with moving screens, and mauling offensive players.

I like how he's disregarding the Lakers like they're a bunch of nobodies, and basically saying that the Miami Heat is their sole focus. BRO, you got to get through us first!

And since when does winning the western conference give you these ridiculous bragging rights? Let me guess, they already have a "2011/12 Western conference champions" banner hanging in their area :man10:
Yeah, you guys keep reminiscing about your cute(failed) title run, meanwhile Kobe and co. are doing work!

Jerkins' situation reminds me of that kid we all knew growing up..... average at best but loves to run his mouth because he rolls with a tough crew who gives him tons of backup. Ofcourse when a brawl breaks out and the rest of his boys have their hands full, forcing him to handle business one on one, he doesn't stand a chance.

Most overrated scrub of all time goes to...PERKINS!!!! Dwight is going to eat him alive just like Bynum always has. And trust me, OKC didn't become some powerhouse when they got Perkins...their young players (Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka and Harden) all got BETTER is what happened. They're better off going with Ibaka on Dwight....perkins is too slow to contain Dwight...Ibaka has the foot speed to keep up with Dwight...but unfortunately id on't think ANYBODY can guard Dwight in this league one on one...so they'll have to double him...and if they plan on going single coverage, i better see the ball in Dwight's hands EVERY DAMN TIME down the court. We actually shoulda beat these guys last year, if it weren't for Kobe choking in games 2 and 4 (rare occurrences i might add) we coulda been looking at a 3-1 lead. We insert Nash and Dwight in place of Sessions and Bynum.....and we got Meeks and Jamison off the bench...I like our chances against OKC this year. They dont scare me, not ONE bit.

Perkins is lucky he's big and tall, otherwise he'd be under a bridge somewhere deciding if people can pass or not

I was saying like he's been in two before, so when he was playing in the Finals this last season shouldn't he have known? And, like you said, unfortunately that includes 2008 when he WON. So if he's been there and won a ring already, shouldn't he know??
