Rival Execs Speculate About Rudy Gay Ending Up With Lakers

The Boston Celtics have held exploratory trade talks with the Memphis Grizzlies on Rudy Gay.

More than one team has speculated that a three-way trade that would send Pau Gasol to the Celtics, Paul Pierce to the Grizzlies and Rudy Gay to the Lakers makes "some sense".

Pierce's $15.3 million salary for next season is guaranteed for only $5 million, which would make his contract tradable.

Saw this on Twitter. Rudy Gay would be an awesome addition to this team. I'd have some concerns about our bigs for the playoffs, but we'd have another pretty clutch weapon.

Realdeal? I know you like this! I still have some concerns about locking into his contract. But he sure does fit our needs at least on paper. Athletic young wing player who can knock it down from outside? Check. I wouldn't be sad.

I'd prefer to do Metta and Blake over Pau for Gay, but I know that isn't even a remote possibility even in Mr. Rogers' Land of Make Believe.

Also, don't do anything if it affects our chances are LeBron in 2014. We are going to need him once Kobe retires.

Yeah, if this is on the table, you have to make attempt to make it work. Gay is as good as any player mentioned in any Pau deal. I like what Mitch said though in his article with Mcmenamin; this is a deadline league. So, with that in mind, you won't see things to pick up any momentum unless closer to the 21st if they're is any legs to these rumors...

Let's do it. Where do we sign? We need youth, athleticism, a dynamic wing who can score, defend some and is not afraid to take big shots?

Yeah. Mitch, I'm sure you are doing something about this already.

Gay-Metta-Clark-Howard and eventually Jordan Hill... that is a very capable, dynamic front court.

I wonder what else we could snipe out of the deal. The deal can't be done with just those 3 players, according to NBA Trade Machine Boston would need to move another ~200k.....

Which could be done by simply giving us Barbosa/Terry/Lee....

So they open up room for JJ Redick. :man1:

Not really, we would need a backup center to play 10 minutes a night. Not worth moving MWP for, considering having him and Rudy on the wings defending with D12 in the paint, would be pure greatness for us.

Yeah, this deal would a be full of win as they say. Pau on the Celtics? Ugh. But they could actually use him and he has a huge expiring contract too.

There would have to be more players involved. Pau's trade number is around 21 million I believe. Pierces is at 15 million and Gay is around that as well I believe. There is a delta of about 5 or 6 million that we would have to get back as well to make this work..... maybe that is in the form of a serviceable big man or two....

Anyway this is what I've advocated for a long time. Gay is a consistent performer and can get 20 points a night on his own.... something we've lacked on this team for a long time.

Gay would give the squad another player that can create his own shot and a much needed shot of athleticism.

Pau doesn't have the trade kicker added to his contract. The way, I think it was Eric Pincus maybe?, explained it was that since Pau is already making max, the trade kicker becomes moot.

I think most of us would be very excited about this trade. It's as good as it gets because it truly addresses our needs -- and no team gets screwed in the process.

Always been a fan of Rudy. He's the perfect fit. Wouldn't really need a big. But if they did there's a bunch of free agents available.

That's the only way I see us making the playoffs is getting Rudy. He makes us more athletic, another shooter, some youth, puts Ron on the bench, and sends a message to Dwight that we are getting younger

Get Rudy gay. And start earl Clark at PF regardless of who the coach is next season

Boston needs another big man desperately. They're relying on an undersized Sullinger right now. KG can only play limited minutes due to age so they lose size, defense, & rebounding when he's on the floor. A lot of that is negated when Pau is on the floor. It makes sense for Boston, IMO. The Grizzles can cut more cap space have some flexibility financially. That's what they wanted in the first place. So, they can get it in this deal. The Lakers can get someone who can create their own shot & create for others; he's athletic, can score from anywhere on the floor and provides another option when the games get tight.

^^

Absolutely. That's why I said that no team gets screwed in this deal. It's solid. We just have to take another player in the deal, most likely. Someone who is probably not going to play.

This would be a great deal for us. Athletic young scorer that plays both sides of the floor. Don't think we'd be worried about getting a big back if we had Hill, but as things stand we'd need a backup C. Ron would get to play more stretch 4 where D'antoni wants him. I prefer Granger/George/or Batum because they'd help our D more but couldn't even think of complaining about this deal.

How about something like this:

Memphis out: Rudy Gay/Chris Duhon/Celtics 1st
Memphis in: Paul Pierce

Boston out: Paul Pierce/Leandro Barbosa/1st
Boston in: Pau Gasol

Los Angeles out: Pau Gasol/Chris Duhon
Los Angeles in: Rudy Gay/Leandro Barbosa

Memphis gets two friendly contracts for next season and a draft pick, not bad for what they're looking for in a Gay deal.

Boston gets one of the better Centers in the game (a desperate need) for a contract they don't want, a pick that won't amount to much, and a guy they're only using 10 minutes a night.

LA gets the explosive wing they need to go along with Howard/Nash/Kobe and they get the bench wing scorer they've been looking for.

Then we waive Morris (or include him in the deal) and sign Kenyon Martin using our injured players' exception. You can do the same with Ebanks and if he's gone try to bring in someone like Chris Douglas-Roberts.

Nash/Barbosa/Blake
Bryant/Meeks
Gay/Jamison/Douglas-Roberts
Artest/Clark/Martin
Howard/Sacre

IR: Jordan Hill
