Hey all,

Robert Sacre under contract for three more seasons with Lakers – he’ll eat up about an additional $408k of cap room next summer.

While 408k is really nothing in the grand scheme of things I would rather have the Lakers wait till next season before signing him for a longer duration. With that said he's a good locker room presence and I love what he brings to the bench (cheer leading).

If the Lakers also renounced Bryant's rights, the team would have about $46.4 million in cap room to spend in free agency.

This is before Nash is stretched out, I'd think? If Nash is stretched out I think we have closer to 50-52 million to spend.

I don't really get the move other than the low price. He's a great teammate, but I don't see anything other than a career 3rd string center there, maybe the Lakers see different and see future backup, I don't know. Maybe our intent really is to go after LeBron and Melo and go cheap with our backup bigs like Miami. Still an odd move to me. That he and Nash will be the only ones under contract next season. I hope we also have plans to keep Hill, and Young and maybe Farmar if he has a good season.

I guess that's the cheapest possible way to get a 3rd string C.. He's a hard worker & obviously the fans enjoy watching him on the sidelines.. Hopefully he continues to improve. He's currently our 5th big with the 4th being the rookie.. I hope we still sign LO..

Maybe the idea is to acquire a roster that is guaranteed to stink it up so we can get a high lottery pick? That would make too much sense so I doubt the team does it.

I'm thinking it's exactly what you brought up: They're thinking ahead to the Miami model of bargain bin centers to throw out there. He's relatively young, a great teammate, and a hard worker. I'm fine with this signing honestly. They're not going to find a big for cheaper than this. He's the last pick in the draft! :man10:

I'm pretty sure their goal is LeBron/Carmelo and then fill out the roster with young guys like Jordan, Nick, and Robert. Cheap and effective (hopefully).

He got signed for when we trade Nash next season and need to throw someone in the trade. :man9:

Don't get me wrong either, I like the guy, I'm happy for the guy, he feels lucky to be here, he works hard and was rewarded. You could do worse in a 3rd string/practice center as well, he has some post moves, he has a jumper, he's a legit 7 footer and big body with 6 fouls to give.

I really like this signing. It's locking in a young 3rd string center for multiple years. H won't ever be a starter IMO, but I can see him working up to Hill's level of contribution after a few years in the league. If not, he's a 3rd string center that cost you pennies in the grand scheme of things,... low risk, high reward.

^ agreed. I like the signing. Above all else, he's a big body who takes direction well. I'm sure late into this season we'll start to see signs of of his potential.

Seeing how much centers get paid... If LA signed him to a short term contract, and he pans out, they'd have to pay up to keep him for that 3rd year. If he's 2nd-string material by year 3, we'd be paying pennies on the dollar for Mr. Sacre.
There are two teams that play in the Staples Center:
the LA Lakers and NBA Clippers.

I'm not complaining, he's getting paid pennies to dance on the bench. But if our goal is to load up with two more superstars, we can get ring chasers for minimum deals then. Why lock up a roster spot for a player who brings hustle and entertainment for the fans (I get cutting him wouldn't be difficult)? I would have just signed him for this year and then go from there. We weren't competing with anyone for his services.

I sat in the stands and watched him play 5 years at Gonzaga..... He's really no better than he was in his redshirt freshman year IMO.... He's hit his ceiling or is very close to it.

That said I think with more time he will show more of what he can do. For the money and under the circumstances this is a decent move.

even at a cheap price why we keep doing this? Ebanks, Morris now Bob here. Just randomly killing roster spots for no good reason.
