Ryan Kelly Discussion: Medina - 2 year deal, no options (19)

I don't think he is like Mihm at all besides skin color...

He's way more like Anderson then Mihm. A stretch four who doesn't like a lot of contact, can pass a little, isn't a strong defender, but can shoot the hell out of the ball.

No I agree. :man10:

Mihm was better than this kid by a long shot.

Any chance he could be a Matt Bonner type for us? I do not know anything about it.

His ceiling is a little higher than that, but yes that's something he could certainly be for us.

As a rookie I normally wouldn't expect to get much of anything out of him, but if MDA is still adamant about the stretch 4 crap he might get some decent playing time. Hopefully he turns out to be useful down the line

He seems like a nice kid. He's confident and he sounds like a worker. Four years of college usually indicates strong character and I think that's what we'll see.

I hope this kid can be successful.

JSM wrote:A lot of people are comparing him to a poor man's Ryan Anderson. I wanted Anderson here since we got Dwight. Kelly is definitely a MDA pick. Biggest red flag I saw was that he's hurt. Only has a week left in his rehab, but that may keep him out of the summer league. With the number of injuries we saw last season, anytime you get an injured player, I get a case of flashbacks.

You need to watch the interview with mitch on Lakers.com. He and the Lakers training staff aren't concerned at all about it.

Well that means all is norm with Lakers land. You aren't a Laker until parts of the fanbase hate you. Welcome to the team Ryan

nice. very impressive interview. articulate - of course, coming fron Duke. I liked his responses about how he could fit MDA's system and how he views his passing and defensive abilities. still hope we get Blatch after we trade Gasol for pieces.

He's well spoken and can shoot. The balance of the "Highlights" that I can find don't show too well however. Brian Cook 2.0. Not sure he will get that shot off so easy at this level unless we are a fast breaking team and he can do it in transition.

For where we picked him he looks better than Morris or most of the guys we typically get in the mid to late second round. That's not saying he belongs at this level. 4 years at Duke would tell you that he's probably done improving as well.

Initially - especially with some initial talk of him not playing D and with him mainly just being a tall, lanky 3-pt shooter - I was a bit worried that this could just be 'one of those picks' from a relatively 'weak' draft. But after reading a bit more about 'R-Kelly' (lol i really like that) and seeing some footage of him I really think he could fill a role for the Lakers.

Great size and pretty good mobility for a guy that can shoot (from range) seemingly so freaking well! I know its only College ball so far, but man he can flat out shoot. AND he has a decent back to the basket game and footwork and a few moves in the post. AND he seems to have good hands and there are conflicting reports that he can indeed defend to a reasonable level.

All in all a 4-year college gut at Duke, 6'11, shoots crazy well, seems confident and willing to work

Where he got picked, there isn't much more you could ask for and I think he could really get some game time - ironically - in MDA's system and could be effective. Don't get me wrong I'm not thinking 'wow he's gonna be a star' but he could be really useful and spot up for baskets from deep and score off the bench.

LOL i mean in looks, body shape and play style he is so much like Dirk and almost a cross between Dirk and Kyle Korver. Would be great if he could be some low level version hybrid of those guys. Also, as he mentioned, Ryan Anderson and Hedo also spring to mind with this guy. Hope he does well.

Also.....hope there is no hate in hear for Chris Mihm....?! :man12:

Mihm was in such a tough spot following SHAQ ffs and being thrust in there to start after Vlade went down. I loved Chris Mihm as a player for the Lakers and he gave his all for the team before that terrible injury. Dude could block shots crazy good on his day too. Biggest knock was he needed to go up stronger with the ball sometimes on offense. But he was actually one of my fav Lakers for a while there

If he can shoot the three at a good clip I'd be pleased, anything more is just a bonus. I wish he would play in summer league though as I feel it would be a good way for the fans and the team to gauge his play against competition.

The kid is from Duke so he obviously has fundamentals. He can also shoot and college sports writers state that he can play defense. Lets see what he can do! "The Glass Is Half Full"

Mitch said that he talks to Phil regularly about basketball and that Phil has "helped" him.

Don't know if anybody has said it, but Kelly is definitely a Phil Jackson kind of pick. Just saying :man1:
