Pretty sure Bynum was in both trade scenarios. We could have only gotten 1 of them realistically.. The price for KG was too high though. Bynum + LO was what we were rumored to be sending out for KG. Much rather have it play out the way it did. Get Pau for crap & turn Bynum & LO in to Nash & Dwight. Just realized I wasted a serious response on a troll thread

A Kidd-for-Van Exel deal offer was on the table from the Dallas Mavericks, but Del Harris stopped Jerry West from doing the deal because Del Harris wanted Van Exel's 3 point shooting.

Imagine going into the 2000's with a core of Kobe/Kidd/Shaq AND Phil...

a lot of things had to fall in place.

if kidd was the one running the show, who knows what kind of player kobe would've become.

definitely not the kid who learned from airballing 3's in utah. definitely not the kid not afraid to take those shots. build it into his system.

kobe needed the ball in his hands to mold himself into the player he is today.

we got a 3 peat without kidd. we got to 2 rings and 3 straight finals without kidd.

moral of story? we didn't need kidd.

moral of the story? what the heck are you talking about... yes, lots of things have to fall in place for a trade to happen, but it's documented that Dallas were aggressive about trading Kidd for Van Exel, but Del Harris didn't want the deal:

In the 1996-97 season, Lazenby writes "the Dallas Mavericks had sought to trade point guard Jason Kidd for Van Exel, but it was [then Laker Coach Del] Harris who didn't want to make the trade..." Lazenby rightly doesn't dwell on this would-have-been, but for the record that would have given L.A. a 1996-97 lineup of Jason Kidd, Eddie Jones, Kobe Bryant, Robert Horry, Shaquille O'Neal, and youngish Elden Campbell, with Rick Fox on the way the following season. Whew, baby, that would have changed history.

So it's not far fetched to think that Jason Kidd could have been a Laker in 1997 if LA entertained the deal. And your projections about Kobe's development are way off base, I'll leave it at that.

We have Nash in the tail-end of his career in 2012, and we're saying he's the first legitimate PG we've had since Magic in 1991. And you're saying "we didn't need Kidd" in 1997???

Yeah you're right - we didn't need a HOF point guard 3 years into his career, and we didn't need to fill this 20-year void at the PG spot ... that's the moral of the story

All he's saying is that Kidd might have stalled Kobe's development into the player he is today. I don't agree with that, but I can see the argument.
