Mark Madsen, a popular ex-bench warmer with the Los Angeles Lakers, is finalizing an agreement to become head coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Lakers own and operate the D-Fenders, who recently lost coach Reggie Theus to the coaching job at Cal State Northridge.

Madsen recently completed his first season as an assistant coach at Stanford University.

Madsen was part of two NBA championships with the Lakers (2001 and '02) in his nine-year NBA career. Nicknamed Mad Dog, many fans best remember him for his unique dance style on the podium for Lakers' championship celebrations.

Before joining his alma mater, Stanford, as an assistant coach a year ago, he spent two seasons in the D-League as an assistant coach for the Utah Flash.

Rumor has it that the first player to get a 20/20 game during his coaching tenure gets a case of these....

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2013/06/27/los-angeles-lakers-to-add-mark-madsen-to-coaching-staff/2464457/

The Lakers may not be landing the big man they want, but they have landed a new big man coach.

While signs continue to point to free-agent-to-be big man Dwight Howard likely heading to Houston as a free agent next month, a person with knowledge of the situation said Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni is adding former Lakers forward Mark Madsen as an assistant coach. Madsen was hired as the head coach of the Lakers' NBA Development League team, the D-Fenders in mid-May, but has received a promotion before his new job truly began. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the decision had not yet been announced.

Only D'Antoni's brother, Dan, remains from his 2012-13 staff: assistant Steve Clifford became head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, Darvin Ham took an assistant job in Atlanta, developmental coach Phil Handy took a similar job in Cleveland, and Chuck Person and Bernie Bickerstaff were not retained.

D'Antoni missed out on a few of his higher-profile friends recently, as former Phoenix Suns and Clippers head coach Alvin Gentry joined the Clippers as an assistant under Doc Rivers and former Portland head coach and Team USA colleague Nate McMillan is, according to Yahoo! Sports, joining the Indiana Pacers as an assistant.

I like Madsen, but if true this is sad. Now he's just plucking coaches from wherever he can find them, Mark Madsen will be our interim head coach 5 games in to the season.

Somebody from LG said that he knew somebody that has ties with the Lakers and mentioned that Mark was gonna join the coaching staff. He wasn't BSing. I thought Jimm Buss doesn't want to hire anybody that's connected to Phil?

Mike freakin' Brown put together a respectable coaching staff. Pringles can't even get his best friends to coach with him. That should be telling.

But apparently it's not just him. We're not even willing to PAY enough for his friends... What does that mean?
