Will The Lakers Amnesty Steve Blake?

Postby Texas Lakers Fan on Sat Jun 30, 2012 2:52 pm

Steve Blake has clearly been a huge dissapointment since signing a 4 year/16 million dollar contract in 2010. It's unlikely they'll be able to trade him what are the chances the team would use the amnesty clause on Blake?

No idea, but they should strongly consider it if they can't trade him. I realize there are worse contracts we could save it for, but barely. Pau and Kobe only have 2 years, Pau becomes a huge expiring if not traded this year, and Bynum only had one year. Blake is a shell of his former self, and that was never great to start with, and we're clearly adding younger, cheaper replacement backups.

Nope. 2y/8m isn't toxic. Blake is still a solid backup.

I'm going to merge this with the Blake thread.

My answer to the OP:

I'd say there is zero % chance of that happening. They need to hold the amnesty as a nuclear option for Kobe, Pau, Bynum sized contracts and not waste it on a 4 million a year commitment. Is Blake overpaid for his contribution? Sure, but it is still a movable contract.

He hasn't been the last two seasons. I don't know what the hell happened. He was pretty decent with Portland, but he's sucked in L.A.

He’s the starting point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers at the moment.

Financially it isn't toxic, but on the court it is downright lethal to the team.

He is not a solid backup. He's an inconsistent role player that is overpaid and at 4 million you have to be pretty bad to be considered overpaid.

He needs to be amnestied / traded / forced into retirement for a couple of reasons:

1.) Mike Brown is in love with him. He will get 25-30 minutes a night if we don't upgrade our roster. He will take minutes away from both the PG and SG position. Brown will roll with veterans he loves, until he is forced to go with something else (I.E. the veteran isn't on the team anymore)

2.) Way too inconsistent. He will be non-existent on the road and will show up every other home game. For 4 million dollars that is downright pathetic. I can name 3 players combined salaries equal Blake's and put up a helluva lot better stats.

- Nate Rob / Pietrus / Delonte West

3.) How are we supposed to get better with him on the roster? He's not getting any better and from his time here, he's only going to get worse. He's had two years to show something and has come up blank both times. When Steve Blake saves your team from a 1st round exit to the Denver Nuggets because he went off 1 game, it's time to blow s*** up.

4.) He brings nothing off the bench. He dribbles around and makes horizontal passes, doesn't penetrate, reluctant to take shots and just isn't what we need going forward.

A solid backup is not Steve Blake. A solid backup is the 3 guys I named above. Steve Blake doesn't even come close in that regard.

If he's on the roster next season, it means it's Sessions/Blake and that isn't taking us anywhere.

I will celebrate when he's off the team and I'm praying it's before this season because I can't take another season of him being Brown's pet.

Ship him to Portland and save the amnesty.

Nothing. For some reason Portland loves him. I don't care what we get back. 50 cents, a snickers, TPE, future 2nd round pick that never comes.

Sigh, guess Laker Management rolled snake eyes on this one... Gotta replace him no matter what. I like the second round pick idea for the amusement of drafting strange players and then cutting them in their second season.

Blazers want a backup PG

Do not expect #Blazers to pursue stars in decline or aging vets for quick fix. Steve Nash, Andre Miller, Chris Kaman, etc, not targets.

The #Blazers do not have intentions of pursing a PG to compete with Damian Lillard for starting spot. Lillard will be the guy.

#Blazers might pursue a veteran PG, but he will be signed knowing his role is to mentor Lillard and not compete for starting spot.

Sign and Trade JJ Hickson to us and we give them Steve Blake?

Perfect situation.

Portland loves Blake

LA loves any player not named Blake or Smush

Hickson for Blake in a heartbeat.

Blake for a 2nd rounder in a new york minute.

Blake for a TPE in a nanosecond.

Blake for anything.....DO IT MITCH!!

Get rid of him. He's making too much money to be as inconsistent as he's been. Worst case scenario amnesty the guy.

Screw Hickson, we don't need him. Take Blake for a future 2nd rounder or something. Seriously... Blake sucks, we don't want him. Hell, protect the pick all you want too.

Hickson is super average and I'd rather the Lakers focus on Hill than try to get Hickson here.

Hickson is a very good player. Granted its a small sample size, but he averaged 15 points, 8 boards, and shot over 50 percent from the field with the Blazers. If Portland offered Hickson for Blake we should do that in a heartbeat. I love Jordan, but JJ is a superior player.
