Steve Nash Confirms This Will Be His Last NBA Season

As he has labored tirelessly through back pain for the last two years, Steve Nash all but confirmed the obvious when looking ahead on what the last year of his $9.7 million with the Lakers will mean for his NBA future.

“I think this is my last season,” said the 40-year-old Nash in a video posted by Sport TV. But I still love to play, practice and work on my game. I’m going to spend hopefully many many years living this life without basketball. It’ll be nice to play one more year.”

The Lakers have not wavered on their stance that they would keep Nash for next season. Although the Lakers could waive him through the so-called amnesty provision, that would require them to pay out his salary through three years instead of one. Doing that could compromise the Lakers’ hopes to pursue high-level free agents both in 2015 (Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rajon Rondo) and 2016 (Kevin Durant).

The Lakers hardly have much confidence Nash can fully heal from a back injury that kept him sidelined for all but 15 games last season. That partly explains why the Lakers acquired Jeremy Lin in a trade from Houston and paid $1.8 million to Washington for their 46th draft pick to select Jordan Clarkson. But Nash could prove an integral piece, playing a mentor role even if it involves playing as a reserve in limited minutes.

Nash’s fledgling health marks one of the many reasons why the Lakers are expected to have a lengthy rebuilding process with another likely missed playoff appearance.

“They’re waiting to see which free agents are available next summer and the summer after, to be honest.” Nash said of the Lakers’ rebuilding strategy. It’s a cyclical league and sometimes you have to go down to come back up. Right now, the Lakers are down and it takes time. I don’t know if we’re going to have a chance this year or not. But obviously in the future, they’ll be back where they have been many times.”

Farewell tour for Nash next year. =(

No kidding, Steve!

Next summer, we'll have Kobe, Clarkson, Randle, Kelly, Young, our HOU draft pick and about $26M in cap space. I guess that's better than we were this summer...

I hope Nash has a nice year and helps us, by some crazy chance, get into the playoffs. I just hope he doesn't do what he did last year, cuz I really do not want to hate the guy.

This. It bums me out how much respect I've lost for him. To come here, play just enough games so we couldn't get him to retire medically, and eat up our cap space... It was a pretty selfish thing to do from a guy who built a career off of not being selfish.

When it comes down to it, if retiring would have cost me any amount of money and the team was willing to let me do my thing, I might not have retired either. Still as a fan it really makes me resent him.

It'd be great if he could play just 10-15 minutes a game for half the season while teaching Lin, Clarkson, and Henry some things. That'd be really nice.

Guy is delusional. And I guess I can't blame him, but he's clearly never really become a Laker, he said "we're" once, and "the Lakers", "they're", and "they'll" more. Never really a part of this team, never even saying publicly that we could be decent for the fans' sake even if he doesn't believe it.

I'd trade him to Milw at the deadline for nothing, just to make his final experience of his nba career a terrible one.

Wow. That wasn't the most pump me up quote about the long shot of Nash being able to contribute at least meaningful minutes as a sub this year, I would have been hoping to hear from him. :bang:

We got Nash 5 years too late, not his fault but his days as a Laker with us are meaningless

If it didn't happen that minute, it would've happened the next. He's been done. Wishful thinking on our part to think he could last more than 10 games.

i want to feel bad for the guy because of the fact that he came here looking to win a title and instead ends up as a major liability on a terrible team

but i really don't feel bad because of the crap he pulled last year playing a game every 2 weeks when his body can't even hold up and then coming out and saying that the only reason he still plays is to collect his check. he's one of the big reasons why this team is going nowhere and i honestly forget he's even on the team most of the time. he screwed the lakers over in those suns-lakers playoff series' in the mid 2000s and he's screwing them over again now

we sacrificed alot to get him too so it wasn't all Nash, his only sacrifice was wearing a hated rival jersey. He got his money, he got a contending team, he got to be close to his family. we gave up multiple picks, so I for one dont have an ounce of sympathy for this guy.

Ya think Steve?

Such an embarrassing way for a 2x MVP and HOF player to go out. He brought almost nothing to this team. Really a bad checkmark on an otherwise stellar career.

Exactly. I want to like Nash, I really do. If he hadn't have refused medical retirement last year the Lakers would have had another $9 million in cap space this year, which would have at least made a LeBron/Melo pairing possible and definitely would have given us the space needed to snag another solid player or two. He also cost us draft picks and next summer's could end up being very valuable.

He's really screwed the Lakers over and the only way he can partially make amends is by being healthy enough to play the majority of the season and helping us towards an improbable playoff run. If this is it for him I hope that he will have enough integrity to try to go out as close to the top of his game as possible and help the team in any way he can. Unfortunately after last season we can't expect that from him.

And yes it is telling that he refers to the team as "the Lakers" and not "us". He has a lot to prove if he doesn't want to be thought of as a guy who is just chasing the money. Of course by the fans of the 29 other teams he's a hero for doing what he has done to the Lakers, so there is that.

Given that the Suns have our draft pick he may actually be their biggest asset still, even though he wears a Lakers jersey.

Come on Steve, prove you are still the player the Lakers thought they were getting and not the unethical shell of a man we saw last year.

wouldn't mind seeing mgmt. sending him to Bucks at the brake just for giggles....if he thinks what he did last year was helping then I dont feel bad for sending him off to a terrible franchise for the last half of his career.
