DYK: Nash's streak of 10 Pts / 5 Ast ends in Lakers' Debut

Postby Jordan-esque on Wed Oct 31, 2012 12:14 am

NBA on TNT's Stat of the Night:

First time in Steve Nash's career when playing at least 20 mins as a starter that he failed to score at least 10 points or dish out at least 5 assists in a game.

Nash had 7 points and 4 assists tonight.

It's sad and embarrassing. And I blame it mostly on Brown.

As I just said in another thread, I like the Princeton for this team, but the idea was that Nash would still be the QB and would have the freedom to do his thing as well.

Im all for MB drilling the Princeton all throughout the preseason, but once the games start to count, the guys deserve a certain amount of freedom to deviate when they see it fit, especially a guy like Nash with his skillset. If this doesn't happy Brown will get tuned out and fired really quickly.

All the starters have been around, they've been the man on their teams, they dont need to be micromanaged.

His dribbling and handles were excellent I thought, and it is something that he is clearly still top notch with, but other than that, he wasn't hardly given any chance to capitalize on what he is best at and there were times when he looked more like Steve Blake(dribbling too much then making an okay pass to someone who won't score because they're not in the best position and are Metta World Peace) than one of the all-time best PGs to play the game.

It is interesting, but it's been posted in multiple threads already, WMC, Potato Head thread to name a few. I'll merge this with the Nash thread so it's In the right thread.

For a decade, nobody in the NBA has been able to slow the one-man fast break known as Steve Nash. Except, perhaps, the Lakers.

From Brown's post-game interview:
"Steve has the ability to do Steve. Every time down the floor, in the early offense, he has the ability to play pick and roll with Dwight. He can do that whenever he wants or he can get us into offense, get us into a two guard front, or he can play pick and roll and then based on where he cuts or passes the ball it gets us in our offense too. But we're not quite there yet."

If Nash really does have the option to play his way everytime down the floor, then it's his fault. I saw Dwight/Pau set screens for him numerous times but he wasn't very aggressive in attacking the rim. Perhaps he really doesn't want to run the offense anymore.

It means Steve is getting mixed signals I'm guessing. I think Mike and the staff are really trying to get the offense learned at the start of the season here, and it's inhibiting our ability to win.

I think Nash certainly does have that ability, but since our team is so uncomfortable with each other, we're doing other things instead. Remember this is the 2nd time we've played a professional game together. It's going to work, we just need time.

In the meantime Nash is going to struggle finding the balance between learning and winning. We need to be able to do both.

It's pathetic the Princeton offense which basically from my observation makes us run our offense from our bigs who stand at the top of the key completely negates all of Nash's strengths. Like Barkley said last night during halftime making us play a half court offense on most possessions will be neglecting Nash and Dwight's strengths.

I wish we'd run a more free flowing offense featuring a lot of pick and rolls. Mike Brown should let the guys decide what to run on offense, we have enough BBALL IQ (besides Metta) to manage ourselves.

When you keep Nash on the leash, this is what you get: Derek Fisher, just before he retired.
