Steve Nash's thoughts on the current state of the Lakers

Steve Nash said that even that scenario -- a 25-27 record heading into the final 30 games of the season and being able to say that they beat both NBA Finals teams from a year ago in a two-week period -- wouldn't mean that the Lakers had put their past struggles behind them and would be ready to march on towards success.

"It’s all relative," Nash said. "I think this season is going to be a disappointment if we don’t win a championship, on the other hand when you look at what we faced this year, it’s probably unlikely that we can find that top gear and what it takes to win a championship.

"The key for us is to plug away, try to get better and you never know. You never know what happens in this league and if this team finds a real rhythm or groove at the end of the season, we can be a real tough team if we get in the playoffs.

"So, anything is possible, but relative to what we expected in the offseason when you look on paper, we’ve had nothing if not inconsistency when you look at the whole environment."

Nash as usual....keeping it real.
Yeah anything is possible, but with this team, this year, there is no such thing as switch to flip or top gear.

There's 0 chance this team can turn it around and beat the top teams in the West. Not with this coach, not with this roster, not with the luck we had all year long.

when a competitor like nash is basically throwing in the towel how is the rest of the team supposed to dive into battle

Probably not the best thing to say, considering there's still a decent chance we make the playoffs and face some of those top teams. I really hope this team continues to bring it each and every night, it's way too early to quit.

he's not throwing in the towel. everyone and their mother knows our chances of winning the championship are slim to none. i don't see him conceding that they won't make the playoffs, just that the chances of winning the title aren't good. but like he said...make the playoffs...then see what crazy things can happen.

he's right, obviously. don't know if you tell the press that, but maybe he's trying to take some pressure of his teammates (or himself). in reality, the lakers are playing for next year right now, trying to set a tone and demonstrate that they can win despite their flaws. if they hit their stride down the stretch but come up short, i think they can legitimately be optimistic about heading into next year with a similar squad, even if they don't make the playoffs. just establish that you can win basketball games together.

Steve Nash, as real as it gets...guys should be extra motivated hearing a warrior like Nash challenge the team.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has doubts.. His confidence hasn't seemed there consistently since he came back. I assume the injury has something to do with that but he just doesn't seem like he knows what guys are going to do. He's holding the ball a long time without doing much probing the defense. Seems like a chemistry issue I don't think he's done or anything..

Sounds positive to me...

I guess some people will see what they want to see in his statements. He hasn't given up, he's just in tune with reality. There's still a chance we make it to the playoffs, but to win a Championship is another level altogether.

Every thing about this team sucks starting with the coach and ending with the chemistry.

every player except Clark, Nash and Kobe has under-delivered.

that'S the whole point this team doesn't have what it takes to beat every team without home court advantage ... even if we would get out of the first round there is no way we could do it all the way

Nash is right though he might have been better served publicly to keep that assessment to himself

This team's chances of winning it all is less that 5% IMO.....heck making the playoffs might be a long shot

Until they fire MDA and take coaching hiring decisions out of anyone with the last name Buss hands not much will change either..... not until a complete retool and a swallowing of egos happens. If or when that happens than we can talk about championships again as the only goal within a season.

If they're playing 700 ball .... Have Kobe/Nash/MWP/Dwight/Pau/Twan/Clark/Blake

They have a damn good shot at winning a ring. Hypothetically they could end up as 7 or 8.

Just assume the clips are the matchup, its mathematically possible. The Lakers would spend 2 1/2 weeks with no travel at all playing in staples :man11:

Then the next round with GS falling, they could logically be in the 2/7 3/6 semis. Wow a whole 2 hour trip which would allow la to stay home most the time :man4:

Yeah OKC or SA are an issue, but the fact LA would have to be ona huge winning ball streak to make it and the fact they can be in the Cipper and warrior bracket the first two rounds makes me laugh when people ignore we can win it all

kblo247 - sure but where is the realism based on what you've seen so far that suggest they can play .700 ball at any point this year for that type of stretch?

I think they only way they make the playoffs now is if Utah or Houston back their way down to the Lakers given what they have shown this year..... things could change I guess but that would be a huge leep this team has not shown it's capable of so far.

If Utah plays 500 ball in that scenario they are out. Isn't that hard to imagine actually especially with them trying to sell Al and not pay tax.

Heck Houston has a stretch coming up that can bring us and them even almost

Lakers are now just 1.5 Games behind Portland, who now visit both Florida teams, let's hope Magic pull the upset.

Rockets lost at the Kings, and then they'll visit Clippers,Warriors and Nets and host OKC. That's the 3.5 games that separate us from them right there.

Even Memphis is struggling without Rudy and their bench the cavs trade gutted, as is Gs with the Bogut plays one game and sits one out stuff

As for the realism, we are basically playing 700 ball in out last 10 games aren't we? :man1:

Well, he's right. I still do believe if we get to the PO's with a healthy Pau returning we can make some noise. But it seems everytime we have an opportunity to make up some ground, we never do. We been stuck at 3.5-4 games back for awhile.

This Lakers team has a puncher's chance to win the CHIP against vastly superior opponent(s) who are younger, faster.

That is...IF we make the playoffs.

Nash isn't helping on or off the court with this.

His play has been a big reason why the Lakers are losing games this year.

So, the Lakers head back to L.A. with a 4-3 roadie in the books. It's certainly a better clip than their road form on the season, and the best performances, win or loss, came against the best competition (Brooklyn, Miami). However, the Lakers remain four games below .500, and it doesn't feel like much ground was gained.

So was this a positive or negative trek? Here were Mike D'Antoni's thoughts:

"It's good. We competed tonight. It's too bad we blew the one in Phoenix, but other than that, we're making strides. We can still do this, but (Miami) set the bar and this is what we have to get to. So this is good for us if we use it as a learning experience and iron out the problems."

The coach's sentiments mirrored those of Steve Nash:

"It's not a disastrous trip, but we would have maybe liked to have gotten another one. Probably the Phoenix (loss) is the one that hurts the most. But, you know, we still have a chance to continue this run of form, which has been a little bit better. You know, we get a chance to win two of three or three of four from here on out."
