Synergy: Points per Possession

Synergy: Points per Possession

Postby trodgers on Fri Nov 02, 2012 12:05 pm

I call this stat SYNERGY. It's simply a measure of how many points a player produces divided by the number of possessions consumed: Produced/Consumed = Synergy.

One CONSUMES a possession by taking a shot, going to the line, handing out an assist, or turning over the ball.

One PRODUCES a point by scoring or by handing out an assist.

GAME 1
Team: 1.15
Starters: 1.08
(Listed by possessions consumed, most to least)
Gasol 1.16
Howard 0.96
Bryant 1.38/MWP 0.75
Nash 1.14
Hill 0.90
Blake 1.44
Jamison 1.38
Meeks 0.75

GAME 2
Team: 1.08
Starters: 1.18
Bryant 1.07
Howard 1.38
Gasol 1.05
MWP 1.08
Nash 1.22
Blake 2.00/Hill 0.14
Ebanks 0.83
Jamison 0.67
Meeks 1.50
Duhon 3.00
Sacre 0.00

Way early thoughts: Blake is clearly maximizing the possessions he consumes. Hill has been productive (in a sense), but he's ridiculously inefficient. Nash's numbers are pretty good (about 1.20), but he was at closer to 1.40 last season. Injury? Adjustment? Not sure. Maybe some of both.

Other telling info: MWP is not consuming many possessions.

Consumption Rates (Consumed/36 min):
Hill 27.1
Howard 25.6
Kobe 24.3
Gasol 22.5
Ebanks 17.5
Nash 16.5
MWP 15.1
Blake 13.9
Jamison 12.1
Meeks 11.6
Duhon 8.6
Sacre 0.0

By the by, I'll keep updating this. It will show, game by game, who was making efficient use of the possessions they consumed. I expect Nash to get better and better and so, by extension, I expect the team to do better.

Sounds interesting. How does it treat players who don't do anything at all?

Where are you getting the possession data for this?

^ Mining NBA.com for three-pointer assists; everything else is easily available in the boxscore (not ENTIRELY true; and-1s actually complicate things a bit).

If you don't do anything at all, you're Sacre. He's the only one who has played and hasn't cracked any of the appropriate stats (I think he did commit a foul though).

So how are you filtering out and-1s?

Corrected for and-1s. Affected players:

Howard: 24.95 possessions per 36, 1.24 points per possession
Kobe: 24.05 possessions per 36, 1.18 points per possession
Jamison: 11.48 possessions per 36, 1.22 points per possession

^ Manually (checking play by play on NBA.com). Just did it. The FGA counts as a possession consumed; a SEPARATE trip to the line counts, too. But an and-1, which is both an FGA and a trip to the line doesn't double count.

I see. This is quite a bit better than something like points per minute (aka the Doug Collins stat).

I thought the stat Doug Collins loved to bring up was points per shot.

Nice trodgers, very interesting stuff. It's cool that you're taking time to do this

SYNERGY vs. Clippers(by most to fewest possessions consumed)
Kobe 1.22
Howard 0.97
MWP 0.88
Gasol 1.23
Blake 1.00
Morris 1.13
Jamison 1.00/Hill 0.67
Ebanks 1.67

*Haven't included and-1s and triples yet.

Mostly what we all saw: Kobe was awesome. Everyone else wasn't really there.

Agreed. Points per possession is a better indicator of offensive efficiency than points per shot attempt.

Having said that, I do think point per FGA has some value in measuring efficiency specifically from a ease of calculation standpoint.

That Gasol number is cringe worthy......

Blake/Morris/Jamison/Hill all better yikes.

His season number seems so-so. He was pretty inefficient last night. Much of that was a dreadful shooting night. 6-16 from a 7 footer doesn't really cut it.

That poor FG% was a tad misleading from Pau. At least a few of those came off of tips around the basket that didn't go in.

I thought he played very well last night.

Well his aggressive start is what gave us the edge. Then as we saw we were picking on a bad team, he slowed down quite a bit.

Against a good team I'd expect him to maintain his edge.
