"Thank you for taking the time to send your comments and suggestions regarding NBA officiating in the playoffs.

We appreciate your passion and your desire to see the La...I mean "your team" perform well in the postseason. NBA officials have a Lakers bias...I mean DON't have of course and they have no preferences, heck they even hate the La...I mean "some teams" but the officials DO make calls with regard to particular players, coaches and teams and sometimes for Laker opponents, just not too often..you know every 4 or 5 minutes and how long is a minute..honestly...Incidentally, for every letter we receive accusing officials of favoring a particular team over the Lakers, we receive an equal number alleging that same thing from the Lakers past players, wait, that doesn't help our cause...hmm.....

OK then, this season, the officials doing the Laker games have averaged more than 16 years of professional experience each (most of them are former spurs) and, combined, have officiated more than 2,000 regular-season football games and according to them, they don't see Bruce Bowen doing anything wrong. All of them have called NFL and NHL playoff games before this season and have been in constant contact with Greg Poppo...I mean David Stern of course. Look god damnit, Referees are human and with the high-paced action on the court, coupled with their own tendencies to develop personal vendettas against whomever threatens Wilt or MJ's legacy...means that even the best officials can miss calls, even often sometimes."

"Our officials are the most scrutinized workforce in America. The league office tracks every call made on the east coast and analyzes every 85th regular season game, and only the best and most experienced officials who happen to be available work in playoff games and move on to each round. Just because most of them live in Sacramento, Dallas or San Antonio doesn't mean they are biased against those whom they have dubbed "the hate satan"

The integrity of the game hasn't always been at the forefront of the league's business. Accusations that the NBA and its officials favor any team or are conspiring to create certain matchups are probably a little baseless. We wish every team well, but it is the nature of competitive sports that there will be a winner, a loser and a favorite who might get some favortism in every contest. Blaming the officials is a natural thing to do for people who don’t like the outcome of any contest, even for people who happen to root for the 3 time defending world champions. We will continue to make every effort and investment to develop, train and equip our officials so that they get lots of calls right...some of the time any way...

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments and suggestions, and thank you for your interest in the NBA."

Sincerely,
