We didn't use any part of the Room exception for this. We still have the 2.7M.

How? We didn't have 1 mil left unless it's because Young and the others haven't been signed yet and releasing Marshall gives us the space.

He and Xavier will sign last. That way we use up everything else and they just sign on for the minimum. I'm guessing it's the same with Ed Davis.

Not sure I get this one..... He showed little in anyway of improvement and I'd think we could have spent that money on someone who is equal with upside.

There isn't really anyone available for the veteran's minimum that fits that description

Exactly.

We first resign every guy we need to resign (including Marshall), then we get Boozer and finally Nick Young. That leaves us with no cap.

Next step we sign Jordan Hill with Bird Rights and finally we go for all the $1M guys using Minimum Player Salary Exception (those would be Wesley Johnson, Xavier Henry and Ed Davis).

That leaves us with the Room Exception ($2.7M) and, of course, every minimum we want to give.

Nice.. I was really confused about why we were letting Wes go.. Glad he's back. Hope this doesn't mean anything about Kelly though.

Thanks for that explanation. That leaves is with enough money to sign one more quality piece. As for the signing, I guess I am OK with it. We needed another wing, but I hope he's not starting. He's best used as a third string SF, IMO.

There are some interesting players playing in the Summer League. I don't have anything against Wes, but he seems to have zero upside, doesn't make anywhere near the most of his physical capabilities.

He's probably starting at SF since we already have 13 players. 14 if Marshall clears waivers and re-signs.

Amazing physical capabilities, but no BB IQ. but hey, someone finally recognized Wes as a SF. That is a step in the right direction. Well, slowly, but surely, we filled the roster. I wonder if we have enough space for one more player?

I guess we'll be using part of our $2.7M room exception to sign Kelly, unless he's taking a min deal? But, why would he need to? He's got upside and I'm sure plenty of other teams will give him more..

When was the last time we have a true SF on this team?.... Glen Rice?

Well.... we have the worst starting SF in the league..... and maybe one of 4 or 5 worst in the league overall.

Ariza? Artest? Artest is absolutely a true SF, no?

No.... SF is a scoring position in this league and has been for 30 years. Artest was a defensive specialist who could score a little in his prime but was basically an off the ball option. Ariza's game is so overrated by Laker fans I don't even want to go there. He's carved out a career but again he's not a primary or even secondary scorer.

Yeah, unless you're seeing something shooting-wise a SF has to have, I don't see why Ariza and Artest weren't SFs.

EDIT: You just posted. I don't see SF as a scoring position of necessity.

We had the best front court scoring in the league for 15 years..... we didn't need scoring from the position but the rest of the league has had it for the most part. Primary scorers are wings... SF/SG's.

Neither Artest nor Ariza were that for us... we didn't need it. Artest was that for one year in Houston but he was not efficient at it. Ariza was never efficient and has never been a first or second option kind of scorer.

We will have limited front court scoring so we need it from a SF rather than our PG and SG alone. Having a true SF playing with Kobe will take keep teams from doubling off the SF position like they have for 10 years now on us. He will need all the space he can get at his age.

I think I disagree with a few things you've said. It's true that some of the biggest scorers are wings, but there are also some 3 and D guys who are SFs - they are a different sort of SF, but they're SFs.

I actually think that with Randle, Boozer, and Hill we'll have solid scoring from our front court. And with Kobe and Lin, we'll have solid scoring from our back court. I'd love to find a 3 and D SF.
