Wesley Johnson Discussion: Back for 1 year/$1 million (26)

Wes will be a fan favorite by mid-season. I'm not really worried about him. The age/health of Nash is a bit of an issue to me as well as Gasol. Will Pau spend another season on the trading block? If so, how does that affect his game? Pau is our 'glue guy' and the most skilled player on the team that is not nursing a torn achilles tendon. Not a fan of Johnson playing the 4 especially when we are still having some issues with team defense. There are some cases that may force other teams to go small, but it's not a Championship strategy, but we aren't a championship team at the moment so I'm also not as against it as some here may be. He will be solid, as his biggest issue may be one of confidence, not skill, and he's beginning to show improvements there already.

I prefer to have him start at the 3. Move Young to the 2. We need his length and athleticism with the first units. With a blake at the 2 and Young at the 3, our defense is gonna be god awful.

his body frame immediately reminds me of shawn marion.

hes a cutter/slasher and does some spot up shooting (which he wasnt GREAT at the past seasons)

but playin him at the 4 is ridiculous considering his lean frame and speed. hes gonna have a hard time guarding legit PFs.

Wesley Johnson has the potential to be a shawn marion type player and/or be scottie pippenesque in defense.

Don't forget rebound like Rodman, score like Jordan and pass like Bird.

I'm actually more impressed with Wes than I was early on in pre-season. I like his D a lot. I get why realdeal has been so up on him. It's just that with D' Antoni he's a tougher fit here than he would be with a more traditional coach. He doesn't have the body type for a 4 - too slight. And he sure as HELL isn't a D' Antoni stretch 4 with his inconsistent shot. But I like him a lot. He's got nice athleticism and has really picked up his defense (looked really lost earlier in pre-season). I think he'll contribute.

Watching the game again, I picked up some of the things he was doing besides missing a lot of shots.

He boarded decently, or at least made guys work for boards by being active around the rim. But what he did really well was weak side help. He blocked a shot nicely coming from the weak side. He also helped create a few turnovers on Blake Griffin's junk post game.

You can tell when he's going to miss honestly. His jump shot isn't fluid and it takes a while. Just like Xavier, when he pulls up in rhythm without thinking about the shot, it's a nice looking jumper. Wes missed a couple and then was stuck in his own head all game long with his jumper. Next game I hope he attacks more.

^^ Yes, it would be nice if he diversified a little offensively and attacks more but he needs to make cuts and get fed off passes. Don't want to see him dribbling.

It's a little bit of a quandary with Wes/Henry because in a more traditional situation it would be clear that they would probably go with Johnson as the starting 3. And for the reasons you brought up earlier this year - he could move off ball, cut down the lane and get feeds from Nash or Pau. But D' Antoni isn't going for that seemingly. I guess we'll see. Henry needs the ball in his hands a little more, but his ability to drive and kick or attack and finish is really making him the stronger candidate. And of course Johnson's length is a plus at the 3 for defense. Then again, Henry is as strong as an axe and doesn't give anything up in terms of physicality which is a plus. You could see Henry bodying up against some of the bigger, stronger threes and Johnson against the lankier threes.

I think was just feeling a little hesitant on taking the shots in the offense, knowing guys like Farmar, Meeks and Henry have been hot.

He just needs some confidence in his shot and it will come to him like one of the preseason games.

His defense was there though. His length definitely affected Griffin and he's definitely active.

They'd make a good 1-2 punch in the future. If we had a roster of those two, Farmar, and Young off the bench with a stronger starting unit, this team could actually make some really serious noise.

PG/Farmar
Kobe/Young
Johnson/Henry
Melo/Hill
C/Kaman?

I don't know something like that. That's actually a pretty solid team to me and I think that's something the Lakers are envisioning for next season.

He struggled with his shot; other than that, I liked what he did defensively on a few possessions; I can see where he can be a good piece; he just needs consistent with his jumpshot...

I don't think he will be that bad offensively every night, but I also don't expect him to be good. I really like the effort and defense he brings though, his offense will come. Definitely a nice piece.

This is the most relevant post on the last couple pages.....

For some reason this kid is getting seriously over-hyped. He's a draft bust that is still searching for a role in the league. He can fit here and help us I believe but some of the stuff being said about him has no basis in reality.... or his past performance.

Defensively he was a little like Morris IMO.... lots of hustle and arm waving but also lots of fouls an being out of position in the team defense scheme. He was the guy rotating late on the pick and roll most times last night. He was lost on several possessions on the weak side away from the ball as well. Defense isn't just being in front of the guy with the ball.....

His shot was off... looking at his past he will shoot better.
