i suppose, but I guess I feel like I've seen what young can do. that's a positive in that I think he's got low bust potential, but I don't think he's going to do something wildly different this year. I think Johnson has more than he's shown. more importantly, I think Johnson can be effective without dominating the ball, whereas young sort of needs to be the focal point of the offense. hope i'm wrong on that, but jamal Crawford and nick van exel both played their whole careers the way young does (better, but same style).

young falls into the category of players who had no direction whether it was from a veteran player or knowledgeable coaching.

he has free reign to explore his talent, but no one to teach him how to execute. if phil didn't come in 2000, kobe could have fallen into this same category.

players like jr smith, monta ellis are exactly the same. a lot of potential and talent, but no direction, so they go off tangent and it looks bad. i'm hoping kobe can guide wes and nick to a more focused play.

wes hasn't had the opportunity i feel to showcase his potential as young did. i feel wes is a more under control player from the get go, but has yet the freedom to explore his talent. i think both will have great years with us, and will develop into players no one expected.

^^^Whoa.... did you just try and draw a parallel between Kobe and Young?

Young and JR Smith are in no way a "Phil Jackson" away from being a Kobe.... or even a good player for that matter. They are chuckers that came into the league early because they were basically pushed into college when they had no business being there by agents/hangers on for the money. Kobe came from a significantly different background... one that valued work and effort. Those bedrock fundamentals are missing from those two at the molecular level.

This was well said. Even though i do believe a great coach like Phil could help Swaggy P and JR. There is no doubt that those fundamentals are instilled into a person at a early age. Has nothing to do with coaching.

Not looking good so far for my man Wes...i really hope he can turn around at some point, because this is not what we expected him to do, Xavier is a LOT better right now, and nobody expected that.

Really glad the MRI results came with good and now he's day to day with a strained tendon in his left foot.

Get well Wesley so you can get your confidence back in games.

Wesley Johnson’s MRI results revealed a strained tendon in his left foot. He’s listed as “day to day.” We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.

Good news. He sure does need to improve his play, though. We heard good things about him in practice; he needs to translate that good play to an actual game.

What people need to remember is wes isn't just competing with Xavier, he's also competing with Meeks

Xavier playing the way he is doesn't necessarily mean Wes won't play. It just means Xavier will play. Wes can still play over meeks

Actually Wes is auditioning for SF or PF more than SG. He's in direct competition with Xavier and Nick Young. Meeks would come long after those two.

The good news for Wes and his fans is that his contract is guaranteed, so he's going to have a spot on the roster and some playing time is likely. Right now, even with Xavier's recent play I'd see the SF rotation as:

SG: Bryant/ Young/ Meeks
SF: Johnson/Henry

I have always thought of it more as this:

PG: Nash, Farmar, Blake
SG: Bryant, Blake, Henry, Meeks
SF: Johnson, Young

We need Blake to play some SG because if he doesn't than Farmar won't get enough time on the court. I know it seems congested by I know that come the regular season and when we're in the thick of things someone will get hurt and it will open up playing time for Henry even though I have him #3 on the depth chart for SG. But he can play some SF as well if Wesley or Nick gets hurt.

early returns are not good, here. he just looked confused in the game I saw. then again, some fairly low hoop iq players have thrived in dantoni's system in the past, so maybe he'll get it down?

I agree. Mine was a more dumbed down version, but you're spot on.

Anyone know what the word is on Johnson? What was the result of the MRI? Any return date yet?

Strained tendon in his foot I believe. I think he's alright to play, but the coaches are sitting him anyway. Same as Farmar.

^^^ :man10: not much of a stretch there.... He's basically stunk to this point in his career so he has the momentum moving that way.

He'll get a chance and I hope I'm wrong but I don't see him being much more than a slight improvement on Ebanks.

The look on his face is why he'll stink this year? Then Nick Young will be the worst Laker we've ever had.

Wesley is what he is, but if the coaching staff keeps trying to force him to create or to play PF, then yes people will hate him.

If they actually stop being idiots and play to HIS strengths (perimeter defense, athleticism, catch and shoot jumpers) then people will like him more.

Wesley looked better. This is what I want from him; be active on the glass, move off the ball creating easy opportunities for himself, play good defense, and hit the open jumpshots. That's it.

It's way too early to declare that Wes will suck this season. He could, he might, but it's too early to say, guy has played 2 1/4 preseason games and is being played out of position. To ask him to guard David Lee is idiotic, Shawne Williams and Pau couldn't guard him and they're bigger and not playing out of position.

the thing that has disappointed me is his shot. it's not just off...its waaayyyy off. like "way too much unintentional backboard" off. I feel like I've seen him show a better stroke before, but maybe I just caught his best games? I like his activity on defense and his movement off the ball on offense. but he's got to be able to hit when left open if he wants to stay in the league.

no what i mean is i can just tell he has no dog in him. I don't sense any fire about the game in his heart & he seems like a really passive soft dude.
