One more consideration: the team still owes guaranteed money to Brown, how much will that hold them back in hiring a new guy. They're definitely not paying Jackson $12m ever again.

Sure D12 likes Phil, it's well known Phil loves great post players and should be leaping at the opportunity to coach D12 at both ends of the floor. But Jackson and Nash? I don't know ... would Jackson appreciate what Nash can do? I'd be asking him that.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Jim Buss said buying out Mike Brown wasn't a concern financially.

I don't think they're worrying about it. But for sure, no one coming in will have a 10+ million dollar salary. They're probably looking at 5-6 max.

I am sure the Lakers' FO has thought about money before they fired Mike.

Don't replace one bad Mike with another.

Thanks.

Magic says Phil or Brian Shaw are good candidates. He also think Jeff Van Gundy is a great fit. Van Gundy did a great Job with Yao Ming and Ewing. I would miss him as TV commentator though just the same I miss Doug Collins.

In any other situation I'd be open to having Van Gundy come over, but bad blood with Dwight doesn't sound good. Jeff or Stan.

The more I think about it, short of bringing PJ back or Sloan into the fold, I'd actually be somewhat excited to have Nate M running the show. He's always been known to be a players' coach and excellent strategist who maximizes the talent on his squads. I'd say that would be a solid hire -- something I never believed with Brown from the beginning.

Phil or JVG for me! Both of those guys can handle the LA media in their sleep and no player will not play hard for these guys. The Van Gundy Dwight dynamic would be interesting, but you know that Dwight does not like to be hated and that is why I was positive he would never go to management and tell them to fire Brown....and he would look at an opportunity to work with a Van Gundy as a way of redeeming his image. But no to Stan (a hoorah hoorah coach)!

Still, I'm just happy that Brown is gone. And..that's one hell of a severance package and really that tells me that money isn't going to be an object to hiring back Phil. If that is the case, Howard needs to scooch on over cause that's Phil's seat.

maybe theyll actually interview more than one coach this time before making a decision. although id be fine with them only interviewing one coach if that one coach were phil jackson and he accepted the job.

Dwight wants Phil!

Dwight Howard has told the Los Angeles Lakers he wants them to bring back Phil Jackson as coach,’ a source close to the team tells SheridanHoops.com.

With the Lakers having fired Mike Brown earlier today, speculation is running rampant about who the next coach will be.

Jackson has been coach of the Lakers on two different occasions, and he remains romantically involved with Jeanie Buss, the daughter of Lakers owner Jerry Buss.

Buss’ son, Jim, is expected to be the person who makes the ultimate decision on who the next coach will be, and the source who spoke to SheridanHoops made it clear that Buss is aware of Howard’s wishes. It remains unclear if Jackson would be interested, but he retains a close relationship with Kobe Bruant and Pau Gasol — two of the players he coached in Los Angeles before leaving the team after the 2010-11 season.
