I disagree Roos....what Phil does is check Jimmy's bad decisions. At the very least you will have a great coach assisting Jimmy in making better coaching decisions.

Phil proved that with athletes, he doesn't mind scrapping the triangle from time to time...so whatever identity we take on, doesn't necessarily mean it will be triangle dominant if Phil gets a desk job in the FO.

If there is feuding and bickering, but the Lakers are in true title contention, then so be it.....this is Hollywood after all.

Either way, my vote is JVG.

My fear is Jim Buss' ego is too frail to handle that. He needs to somehow be removed.

While JVG was a great defensive coach, his Rockets team with Tmac/Yao avg. like low 90's ppg....his offense is pretty basic and boring. Isn't there a coach thats pretty balanced on both ends out there that we never heard of?

He's been the enemy since the mid 90's beating us in the playoff with Seattle, it would be very hard for me to root for that guy as the Lakers coach, like it is to root for 'Antoni. I don't know that I could ever really feel like he's part of the franchise because of the history, and I know these aren't good reasons but that's how I feel.

I didn't vote for Jeff Van Gundy because I don't think he's coming back to coaching so I don't think it's realistic. I do like SVG though, that would be my choice. After that I picked someone else as in if Thibs quits in Chicago or something.

:man10: ..... I felt the same way about Phil.... Arrogant jerk that taunted us during the 90 series.....

Karl isn't my first choice but he's the most likely choice given what I've heard about the desire to be exiting again. The Van Gundy's would be a great team but I'm not sure JVG will coach again.

I became a fan in '92/'93, 2 seasons after that, so I never witnessed it. I did see Karl as the enemy for almost 20 years though, that's tough to get over.

^also, hasn't karl openly admitted to hating the lakers? i remember hearing that somewhat recently

i picked jvg and someone else, dont think jvg is coaching again though as others have said. as for "someone else" if TT is fired or quits we'd be stupid not to offer the job to him. and for someone completely out of left field and who has no reason to come here, i'd go with tom izzo

I don't think that can be said with any certainty.

That's too bad then, because I think we need to stop obsessing over it and move on.

Who is obsessing?

The people who bring up Phil in any thread about management and coaching.
My friends who keep on saying management needs to bring back Phil.
The various comments on the Lakers Facebook page.
Various posters on Lakersground.
Various posters at LakersNation.
etc etc

FWIW, Phil will always be involved with the Lakers organization as long as Jeanie and him are married. He'll be around the Lakers offices from time to time. He'll be chatting with Mitch and the FO on occasion.

I don't think it's obssessive at all to envision that he may return. As long as he's married to one of the owners, the chance is always there.

I'm very intrigued about SVG. He impressed me with what he did with a Miami team with Wade and pieces, then managed to guide the Magic past Lebron and the Cavaliers to the finals. I know he wouldn't have a Howard to anchor whatever defensive schemes he has, but it sure as hell would be better than what we're running now.

1st - Byron scott with Rambis and cooper as assistant (Kobe has respect for scott)
2nd - Jeff Van Gundy
3rd - Karl - I wont be surprise if he gets the job because of the NC connection with Mitch.

A friend of mine who hates the Lakers (Norcal guy loves the Warriors) said that he read that the Lakers might pursue Larry Brown. Now say what you will about him but the guy can flat out coach and is better than anyone on that list above.

His SMU team is doing well and will likely make the tourney.

I would be beyond thrilled to have Larry Brown. :jam2:

He's one of the best coaches of all time. Honestly, I could see making the argument as I've heard some do, that he's a better all around coach than Phil.

He's not a long term solution because he can't stand staying in one place. But man, I would feel great about having him for a couple/few years.

He is a great teacher and could really do wonders with someone like Marshall.

He is. He's just one of the all time greats and I'd love to see him here. Even if we didn't necessarily have the personnel to go all the way, at least the chances would be so much higher to see some quality basketball played in Lakerland again. Enough with garbage D' Antoni and Mike Brown. We've been stuck with basically UNWATCHABLE basketball for three years now. We need a change.

Phil as much as did back in the series where they beat us as well... $$$ and a chance at titles changed his mind.

Brown would concern me because of the seemingly adversarial relationships he seems to have with star players and front offices. He appears insecure and so needs constant reassurance. Does anyone see Brown getting his ego massaged from the Laker front office?

The plus is having our players learn a more well-rounded game than is currently being practiced at Staples Center. He also might, inadvertently, force change in our front office by challenging and embarrassing them.

Anyone not named Dantoni would be an upgrade. But my first choice would be Stan Van Gundy. He's got a .641 career winning percentage. In his full 82 games seasons he averaged 53 wins. Yes, he had some stars, but you can't deny was a quality coach who knew how to coach defense.

The wild card is Jimmy Buss. Who knows what he's thinking? For all we know he might have such an ego he thinks he can find the right coach by using some crazy, unorthodox method to choose one. Maybe he thinks a bartender is the next great one.

I have no faith whatsoever in Jim Buss. I'm afraid he will run the franchise into the ground. And the championship history in Laker land will be a distant memory over the next few decades. He might make the Clippers front office look like the best LA franchise for the next 20 years.

larry brown would be such a bad choice

he constantly clashes with the FO which is why he has rarely ever lasted more than a couple seasons at one job, and his track record at developing young talent is dismal

Stan Van Gundy is completely overrated. The Heat didn't elevate to championship status until Riley fired him. The Magic didn't get to the finals legitimately, they beat the Celtics after Garnett had re-injured his knee and was not available for that series.
The End is nigh. Time for a total Cut and Shuffle. Kobe contract was a mistake...time to avoid making more. The future is here, whether we want it to be or not. An era is over, but for the death rattle, and it's time for the cycle to begin anew. Growth and change are scary and painful, but alas...nothing worth achieving comes easily.
