Who would you choose as the next Lakers head coach?

Assume Phil Jackson is not available, and will never coach again.

I don't think Mike Dantoni is a championship caliber coach. We have seen multiple large leads given away in the first two weeks of the season, and with all of our veterans like Nash and Gasol, I don't think Kobe alone will be able to solve that. That being said, who among available coaches would you choose?

I always thought Stan Van Gundy was a quality coach, but after last night, it occurs to me that he's the only coach that figured out how to make Dwight Howard look better than he really is. His offense really disguised Dwight's weaknesses, and he's always been a solid defense of coach. I thought Dwight was going to be unstoppable that series, and was surprised at how well Gasol and Bynum neutralized him in the post. I would give Stan a serious look out of all available coaches.

No order

Stan Van Gundy
Popovich
Carlisle
Vogel
Adelman
Thibodeau
Rivers ( F him though)
Hollins ( available)
Spoelstra

Here are the only "current" coaches who are decent enough to lead SUPERIOR talent to a title... or to not prevent the best talent to win

Jackson looks promising .... MDA , Clown , Brooks , Woodson are liabilities.

^obviously most of those coaches aren't available, ,but much depends on who we sign in the offseasons to come.

if we miss out and go full youth movement, i'd rather steal one of Popovich's disciples.

Pop would be my choice... but he majorly effed it up against Miami. Maybe age is getting to him, i don't know. I would be ok with the Van Gundy brothers, JVG first, then Stan.

^^^^ Two possessions , as important as it was, shouldn't negate the fact his defensive strategy against Wade and Lebron was SOLID ... nobody is flawless

The schemes on both ends off the floor and the minutes management make him the best coach in the league by a good margin .

In between games adjustments in the postseason are there too .

yeah it wasn't a straight answer from wcsoldier81 ... there may be others solid coaches who have little talent to deal with/I'm unaware of because I barely watch their team

Adelman

That shipped has sailed for me I think. I loved the idea of Adelman coming in right after Phil's last season because of the similarity to the triangle and his ability to use bigs. I thought he was absolutely the perfect fit and the right personality to work with our veteran squad at that time. I thought Kobe, Ron, Gasol, Bynum would have really worked well with Adelman on both sides of the court. The hiring of Brown was just a total blunder.

But now? I just don't have a clue as to what kind of team we're going to have next year and going into the future. I don't know the direction we're going or the philosophy. We don't have a clue as to what Kobe is capable of either, post-injury. I think it's just a big question mark all around.

I usually think of putting the pieces of the team together as the first part of the equation. Then you try to get a coach who can bring the best out of those pieces.

Since we're missing the first part it's too hard for me to imagine who I would want as a coach. Maybe someone we don't even know about yet. I'd need to see what kind of team we're going to have next year or thereafter.

As much as I dislike D' Antoni, I don't think there's any reason to fire him this season. I would love it if he's gone in the summer though. The direction he's going with the small ball is just a crap shoot to me. I'd like to see something that utilizes the players at their natural positions and just makes more basketball sense than going small and shooting threes all game hoping to outscore the opponent, while not playing D.

I am OK with MDA temporarily, no reason to fire him IMO. Just creates unnecessary tension... and people would think the owners don't have a clue about running the franchise (which, perhaps, they don't... but potential new players don't have to know it).

After MDA, I would go for one of the Van Gundy brothers, or even both -- one doing offense, one focusing on defense. _That might be interesting to see.

I don't think Phil is coming back, Adelman will have a job, Sloan probably won't coach again... so most of these guys won't be available. Van Gundys could be the answer. Or you could try to go with Kurt and see how he develops as a head coach. It's a risk in any case.

But we need good new players first. Keep some of these youngsters. They are cheap and excellent off the bench. Try to get two stars if possible. Without star power, no one can lead the team to chamiponship, forget about it. Not Phil, not Sloan, no one.

The Van Gundys, Karl, Hollins, and Sloan are all available. I'd take any one of those in a heartbeat.

True that in reality, the team is in transition personnel wise. I would think Kupchak and Jim Buss would be savvy enough to put together a good core to support Bryant in the upcoming free agency with all that cap room. I believe it won't be a 12-20 year drought for the organization to become relevant again.

I wouldn't mind Jeff Van Gundy too. Sloan's a good prospect BUT his old school style will get tuned out without veteran leadeship and players of like mind.

I'd take them over Mike. I'm more partial to Hollins. I think he was pretty solid in Memphis and was great developing that team to what it is now.

On that note... I wonder if Fisher will go the Jason Kidd route and go right into coaching?

I want to know what the direction is before I suggest a coach. If the idea is to keep a run 'n gun style, then hire George Karl. If it's a defensive style approach, JVG or SVG are certainly folks to consider. If it's a person who can get along with certain high-maintenance personalities, I'd think about hiring Lionel Hollins, who seemed to find a way to reach Zach Randolph.

I think Rambis is first in line.

Fisher may come as an assistant coach I would assume. Kobe would LOVE that.

Rambis+Fisher and some of Phil's old crew? Hamblin/Cleamons? :man1:

Vogel and Thibs would be the ideal choices. Obv not available though. I prefer Vogel as he's young, preaches defense, smash-mouth style bball, gets the best out of players, is a players coach, commands attention, and is passionate.

Out of the FA list... both Van Gundy's
