Metta opting out would be huge. I wouldn't mind him giving him a lower salary and an extension; albeit with a much, much lessened role. Nevertheless, that would give us more flexibility during the summer to improve this aging roster.

As for Pau and his reintegration into the starting lineup so soon was completely moronic. As I said in another thread, we developed a winning formula and some momentum; now, we are in a position where we've lost 3 in a row and our starting lineup has so many defensive liabilities. If we have any hope of making the PO's & making some noise, Pau needs to come off the bench, IMO.

I doubt Metta would opt out unless he got MLE-type money or say 4-5 mil each year for 3 years. He won't lose out on 7.7 million next year for a bargain deal of like 2.5-3 mil for 3 years.

If he opts in, there's a chance he might get amnestied. Though I'm not sure how we can replace him other than with Gasol's expiring.

Gasol could get the amnesty nod if they can't get pieces AND cap space back for him. But I think MWP has the inside track if he opts in. Maybe he knows and is willing to opt out to take the same or a little more money over a multi-year contract. A 3 year deal at $2.6m per year gets him close to the same amount of money he'd be passing up if he doesn't opt in. If they amnesty him, I do not believe he can be resigned for at least a year.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

It is probably his only option to stay with the team. If he wants to remain a Laker, he's going to have to accept less money. I'm guessing this is a conversation that Mitch has already had with Metta's agent.

It's not even about his play on the court (which can range from very good to Holy **** awful), it's a business decision. He's not worth anything close to 7 million a year. Especially with the new CBA being what it is.

We have so many expiring contracts next year from Kobe(not going anywhere), to Steve Blake, Jodi Meeks, Metta World Peace, Antwan Jamison, Pau Gasol(19 million expiring), Jordan Hill, Chris Duhon. The lakers have a lot of expiring contracts to throw at teams. With Kevin Love unhappy, and unlikely to resign, and likely to miss the rest of the season, we could get him with a piece centered around Gasol and pieces. Also frees us up to sign Earl Clark as well, which I love.
