I respectfully disagree wsoldier.
The league is getting faster and more athletic cause the game glorifies that. Kids that are physically big, are brought up on MJ, Kobe and now Bron....its hard for them to grow up and say I want to emulate Bill Russell and the way he played the game.
So you have bigs playing small ball in an already small guy dominated league. Joakim Noah gets alot of hate, but I love that he tries to play big defensively. Now imagine pairing that type of player with a coach that glorifies small ball. Noah doesn't stand a chance of evolving as a player under D'Antoni, as he does with Thibs at the helm (see Jordan Hill here).
And that is where I'm trying to go with this. We have some talented players on this team. Granted they're older, but if they are guided a certain way, they could play up to their potential. Even before we fired Brown, people had us heading to the Finals vs the Heat. That accounted for age and everything, cause on paper, we had the talent to get that done. No one anticipated that Brown would focus more on offense instead of defense and that his firing would end up with a coach notorious for defensive futility.
Barring the ankle injury, Kobe if motivated, can be a really good defensive stopper. Look to the last 2 Olympics & FIBA tourneys where he gave the scoring responsibility to Bron and Durant while he tried to shut down the opposing team's best perimeter scorer. Remove D'Antoni's green light on the 3ball and replace it with a guy like Thibs or JVG and look at how Metta's game changes. Its a given!
We got the talent to put up 100 on any given night. We don't need a gimmick or some variants of the PnR. All we need is smart basketball being played and emphasis on D and we're right there in the title hunt.
In terms of having 2 way players...next to us, the Spurs are the next best thing to winning multiple titles in the previous decade. They had Duncan who was a legit 2 wayer, but you can't really say the same about the rest of their core....Parker and Gino weren't defensive stoppers. Yet look at the results. Now replace Pop with D'Antoni, I'm not sure the Spurs look the same. In fact, I'm confident they wouldn't look the same.
