WMC 12/13: Mercy kill. (0-4)

Puff, thx for clarifying and I do agree that the players should not get off scotch free. The blame game runs deep, but IMHO it starts up top.

The FO did not execute due diligence in the coaching hire, even after they said they would do so. So I feel the blame rightfully starts with them. From there it trickles down to the coach and not getting his guys properly prepared...to the players themselves, for not playing with effort necessary in being a championship contender.

Its not a great mentality to have, but I still feel that the players aren't playing hard for MDA cause they don't believe in the guy.

This team is nowhere near a title contender whether coached by MDA , Phil , Pop or whoever you want .

Is MDA a good coach or the right coach for this team ? No but how long are we going to pull the coach excuse card ?

The reality is the core of our team is constituted by old players , past their prime , except for D12 who has his own health issues to deal with ... our roster isn't a good fit for today's fast and athletic NBA ( you can add on top of this , no depth at the 2 and 3 positions).

I'm just asking this question , how are you supposed to contend for a championship with ONE single 2 way player on your roster ?

We'll probably be a 2nd round exit at best without all these injuries and a great coach ...

pek on Dwight is pretty tough for Dwight on O and his rebounding and stretch will be a problem too. Kobe ISO can't be in full effect and pau has the advantage so he better show up on BOTH ends. unexceptable if we lose. and if we win it better be a blowout. no excuses

how often do you watch Minn game to say Pek is a stretch big? Out of the games I've seen I never gotten that impression, everything he gets is off of PnR and put backs no different than Howard.

Wait who is our 2 way player? Dwight in his current form is too reliant on others to generate offense for him, Pau is broken right now, Nash no, Kobe no, Ron lol no.

We don't have any 2 way players.

I think he was referring to Kobe. His defense has been putrid, but there were times this season when he ramped up his effort to stop Jennings, Irving, etc.

Dwight almost counts except he can't create his own shot. His offensive numbers and rebounding definitely are on par with "two-way" player though.

of course metta would be out the rest of the season. with how things have gone so far id expect nothing less. ugh.

looks like this season was just a disaster and a trial period. next season should be what we all expect given no one leaves and we sign some better players without changing too much of the main core

Talking about D12 ... his offensive numbers are good enough imo to be qualified as a 2 way player ...

I respectfully disagree wsoldier.

The league is getting faster and more athletic cause the game glorifies that. Kids that are physically big, are brought up on MJ, Kobe and now Bron....its hard for them to grow up and say I want to emulate Bill Russell and the way he played the game.

So you have bigs playing small ball in an already small guy dominated league. Joakim Noah gets alot of hate, but I love that he tries to play big defensively. Now imagine pairing that type of player with a coach that glorifies small ball. Noah doesn't stand a chance of evolving as a player under D'Antoni, as he does with Thibs at the helm (see Jordan Hill here).

And that is where I'm trying to go with this. We have some talented players on this team. Granted they're older, but if they are guided a certain way, they could play up to their potential. Even before we fired Brown, people had us heading to the Finals vs the Heat. That accounted for age and everything, cause on paper, we had the talent to get that done. No one anticipated that Brown would focus more on offense instead of defense and that his firing would end up with a coach notorious for defensive futility.

Barring the ankle injury, Kobe if motivated, can be a really good defensive stopper. Look to the last 2 Olympics & FIBA tourneys where he gave the scoring responsibility to Bron and Durant while he tried to shut down the opposing team's best perimeter scorer. Remove D'Antoni's green light on the 3ball and replace it with a guy like Thibs or JVG and look at how Metta's game changes. Its a given!

We got the talent to put up 100 on any given night. We don't need a gimmick or some variants of the PnR. All we need is smart basketball being played and emphasis on D and we're right there in the title hunt.

In terms of having 2 way players...next to us, the Spurs are the next best thing to winning multiple titles in the previous decade. They had Duncan who was a legit 2 wayer, but you can't really say the same about the rest of their core....Parker and Gino weren't defensive stoppers. Yet look at the results. Now replace Pop with D'Antoni, I'm not sure the Spurs look the same. In fact, I'm confident they wouldn't look the same.

^ Can't really agree that it's all on coaching.

I also can't agree that Kobe isn't motivated. Kobe always gives 110% when it comes to effort.

Which brings me to yet another aspect of coaching.

With a veteran team, you try to buy your guys some time on the bench. If we play fast paced and perimeter oriented, you can accumulate alot of points in rapid fashion...but on the flip side, you can give up a lead or get into a hole just as quickly.

If we played with a tempo that favored our vets, we buy them more time on the bench and the obvious byproduct is limiting them to injury.

We've had some freak injuries this season, but its also debatable that some of these injuries have occurred to wear and tear.

If the emphasis is scoring and you want to put the ball in Kobe's hands to play the set up guy, then its natural he tries to catch a breather and cheat on the other end...especially if the coach is adamant in playing his core extended minutes in a game no matter what the ramifications may be moving forward.

I'm not putting all of our problems on coaching, but IMHO the majority stems from it.

His offensive numbers from his Orlando days I agree. But right now he's not effective enough offensively to really be considered a two way player. We're a better offensive team when Dwight isn't on the floor, his FT shooting is just so horrible and he doesn't have the explosion to finish like he used to (75% at rim in 2011, 73% last season, and 68% this season). Even Kobe is finishing better at the rim (70%).

It's a good thing his defense is coming back to full form though

i would have expect clark to start at the 3. kobe on ak47 isnt gunna end well...he'll get wide open 3's all night thanks to kobes d.

and off the bench shved and barea will be a handful so i would have expected a blake/meeks combo to counter.

dantoni isnt the smartest defensive coach so i dont expect him to get it....but kobe on ak47 is stupid. leave him on ridinour and let clark guard ak47. then when jj and shved come in blake and meeks can counter. now all the minutes will be mixed up and our bench guys prob wont get in a rhythm. clark prob plays 5 mins which is stupid. jamison prob only 15 which is stupid.

Nash/Blake
Kobe/Meeks
Clark/Kobe
Pau/Jamison
Dwight/Pau

simple rotation. clark starting makes way more sense than meeks. every game clark does the same thing and is a double double waiting to happen. meeks to inconsistent to start. if hes in a groove and hitting 3's then he plays more....if not then he sits and clark gets more minutes leaving kobe at the 2. simple....for everyone but dantoni

well i'll start with the freshest thing in my mind, the very last defensive sequence. kobe missed his last free throw, and just stood there in his pose...even after rubio got the rebound and started to break. got away with a foul at the end there too. wtcrap was that.

dwight (overall a pretty phenomenal game) bricked a ton during hack-a-dwight which let the twolves right back into the game.

lastly, turnovers.

This team has no killer instinct whatsoever, lazy as f***. Whenever they get a double digit lead that's their signal to stop playing and assume the other team will give up.

I can't count the number of wins this season where I left disgusted.

Then you have to learn how to relax a little. You post like everything this team does is tragic and affects your life in the most horrific way imaginable. It's just basketball man. Lakers are the best basketball franchise. Yes, they are not very good right now, but they will be back soon. Be happy you're not a Warriors fan.

Other then that, turnovers are still my biggest complaint. Everyone is so careless with the ball.

Too bad we're not catching Rockets. We probably don't even want to catch them. Hopefully we can just secure that #8 now.
