Worst trade

What is the worst trade the Lakers have completed since 1980 ?

My personal feeling is letting Van Exel go for Battie and Lue. Battie quickly was traded for the big white guy (forgot his name). Lue helped us vs Iverson in 01, but Van Exel woulda helped A LOT more.

Now, your thoughts????

I don't consider the NVE a bad trade at the time. Retrospect says yes but at the time NVE was not happy in LALA land.

Worst trade:

Vlade for Kobe, Kobe an unproven player in the NBA at the time, Vlade is now the force behind the Kings!!

LMAO!! Oh wait, that was the BEST trade.

Damn these is a good question.

That reply was funny because as I read it I was about to cuss you out. HA HA You know, Jerry West (ever humble) hates when people give him credit for that trade because he is good friends with the guy who was GM in Charlotte at the time and he doesn't want to rub it in his face. Trading Vlade also gave us the $$$ to sign Shaq. Just a GREAT trade!

i think it is
eddie jones & elden campbell
for
glen rice & jr reid
i loved eddie, never liked glen and consistley think aboiut what our team coould be now if we just never made that trade. like always undoing the trade in my video games. i also undo the van exel trade too and this is what i get:
o'neal
campbell
jones
bryant
van exel
but oh well we did go onto win 3 championships and if he continued to do well buss might have not payed for phil jackson - so it doesnt bother me that much.

EJ

Eddie Jones HAD to go. Shaq was so fed up with him it's not funny. Try to remember, at the time the Lakers had a million strong egos and Shaq was trying to be the leader / enforcer. He could come down on Van Exel and Kobe and they would either ignore him or respond, but Campbell and Jones would get sensitive and play like caca for games on end.

Shaq was fed up and was sending messages via media that "my guys shouldn't be shooting one legged 3s like they're Rex Chapman". Eddie was just too sensitive. I love his game too! Wish he coulda stayed and played under Phil, but he got his money and we got our rings, so it all worked out.

Oh yaa, there is the situation with him and Kobe playing same position......

I have to agree with Kobegotskillz... we could have gotten a LOT more for Nick Van Exel than Tony Battie and Lue. We ended up trading Battie and for Knight and releasing Lue anyway, so it was a totally worthless trade :man7:

I can't hate on Jerry West though, he is hands down the best GM ever.

Are you kidding me???!!

The worst trade by far is Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell for Glen Rice..

Even if Campbell was a thorn in our side, him and Eddie were huge..

I'd say the worst trade was Peeler and Lynch for a 2nd round pick. The financial results were worthwhile, but that was the worst compensation to-date.

Sam Perkins for Doug Christie and Benoit Benjamin was a little suspect. Would have been ok if they didn't give up so quickly on Christie who was supposed to be a prospect anyway, but Benjamin has always been a brick.

EJ and Elden for Rice wasn't that bad. EJ was always hot and cold, EJ was going to require a large pay increase, we needed room for Kobe at the SG, and Elden's time was up. We won a championship with Rice, but we never did with Eddie. Go figure.

Nick was a cancer ("Cabo") with a bad knee and was talking about retiring. You don't get much for damaged goods.

I THINK WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE LYNCH/PEELER DEAL, HAD WE JUST KEEP THE PLAYERS WE RECIEVED WE'D HAVE BEEN OK

EDDIE WAS AND IS SOFT, ELDEN WAS AND IS AN ENIGMA, GLEN RICE HELPED BRING THE FIRST LARRY O'BRIEN, AND JR RIED WASENT THAT BAD I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HIM

NICKY VAN FOR BATTIE AND LUE, HAD WE KEPT THEM, THE TRADE WOULD BE PRETTY GOOD, BATTIE IS A YOUNG ATHLETIC SHOT BLOCKER, TYRON IS A LITTLE SPARK PLUG OFF THE BENCH WHO CAN COVER PG's

SAM PERKINS FOR D. CRISTIE AND BENNY BENJAMIN IS A GREAT TRADE IF THEY GIVE CRISTIE THE CHANCE TO PLAY :bang:

THE TRADE I HATE AND IS THE WORST WITH OUT EXCEPTION IS

TONY BATTIE FOR TRAVIS "IM A PILE OF GARBAGE" KNIGHT

We need a new trade though for real.

I hate to say it but Rush, Pargo, Russell, Grant have been nothing but wasted chairs on the sideline.

the trade of jones for rice led to a run of three titles in a row.....not sure how you could say that was a bad trade......kobe and jones played the same spot and although eddie was one of my favorite players, he really hasnt had much impact on charlotte or miami since being there....hard to knock a trade when you win the title right after making it.

as far as trading van exel....well, he had to go.......if you remember, his problem was with shaq (anyone remember '1,2,3 cancun'?) and pissing off his teammates. after his act as a laker, he didnt really have much trade value and was looked at as a malcontent at the time. this guy basically pouted his way out of los angeles.

also, elden campbell? are you kidding me? this guy was/still is the definition of unrealized potential.......and flat out lifeless play. in my opinion, this guy is a nice back up, but an nba bust.

finally, after all three of these players were traded, the lakers went on to win 3 of the last 4 titles. coincidence? i dont think so.

for the record, i was/still am a huge van exel and eddie jones fan. but with kobe coming up and the development of shaq alongside kobe, there just wasnt any room for these players AND their salaries. no, i didnt really care for glen rice, but he filled a need for the spot up 3point shooter we needed at the time.

it's all about the ring, and we got 3 of them after making these deals, so i find it hard to argue against them.

sometimes the best trades are the ones you dont make (kobe anyone? i dont think so)

worst trade

Postby socalraider70 on Mon Nov 10, 2003 2:04 pm

THE WORST TRADE WAS EDDIE JONES AND ELDEN FOR RICE AND J.R. REID PHIL JACKSON SAID IT HIMSELF IF HE HAD E.J. THE LAKERS WOULD HAVE THE BEST DEFENSIVE TEAM EVER SHAQ, HORRY, FOX, KOBE, FISHER, AND EDDIE JONES AND ELDEN! REMEMBER E.J. AND ELDEN DIDN;T HAVE THE BENEFIT OF PHIL'S WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE!

The worst trade was probably not making the one last year at the trade deadline which would have given us Jason Terry and Theo Ratliff for Horry, Rush, and I think Fisher. That would have definitely put us over the top last year and we would be talking about 5 in a row. Could you imagine Terry, Kobe, Fox, Ratliff, and Shaq versus the Spurs last year? But I guess it all works out for the better cause we got GP and Malone...

The worst trade ever was when Laker traded Eddie Jones and Elden Campbel for Glen Rice and three other guys who got cut before their plane landed in LAX.

Also, the trade of Sam Perkins to Seattle for Benoit Benjamin was a disaster too. Ever since we traded Perkins, we sucked in power forward position.

I know, but I think Eddie and Elden would have helped a lot more. I think we would have still won the first title without Rice. Eddie is not a superstar, but he can be that "other" guy who does all the work and occasionally gives you 30 points. Miami tried to turn Eddie into a superstar and it didn't work. They wasted his talent and career.
