Xavier Henry Discussion: Xmin

^That could be; Xavier needs a mid-range game though. Instead of taking it all the way to the rim at times, if he could stop in that intermediate range and hit that shot, he'd be more effective. Jermaine O'Neal took at least 2 charges from him Henry and other teams will follow suit. I like him attacking and drawing free-throws but teams will adjust and that's where he needs to diversify his game, IMO

He wasnt' passive last night, he attacked the rim. It's just other teams are finding out about him now and adjusting for his game. He needs a counter, mid range game, something. He's too predictable. How effective can he be with defenses aware of him will determine how successful he'll be in this league.

Well he can't go right and the Warriors were aware of it ...

It would be nice to have some more ball and bodies movement so he could attack off the ball and from different spots on the floor too ... and not only as a primary ball handler ...

We're going to struggle on half court sets if we asked Henry , Farmar and others to score only from isos and PNR on a consistent basis .

Henry can and did score or get fouled going to his right a few times actually. I was particularly watching for it the last game, and he did do it with a little success, so that's a good sign that he can work on that aspect of his game instead of trying to add something he's completely uncomfortable with.

Mark Jackson's effect on GS was evident in that game. They played Henry's strengths very well all night. What was impressive to me was that he still scored and was effective.

We may have stumbled onto something in this kid. We'll see if he can keep it up.

^Yep, he still managed to attempt 9 FT attempts despite GS's focus on him, and still scored 14 points.

Nick Young is probably the next person who can do that.

However, he settles for jumpers probably 80% of the time. I would like to see him use his dribbling skills and shooting ability to take players off the dribble to paint and draw fouls.

I honestly think Young is set in his ways now and I really wonder if he'd be willing to do the work to change his game. He could be really good and shows flashes, but it's not a stroke of bad luck as to why this guy can't stick with one team long term. His game needs a little more discipline and a purpose. What I mean is that it always seems he is out there gunning it when open, but he doesn't seem to have a strategy throughout the game on attacking.

I can see X learning to establish himself within a game to attack certain players or situations within a game over the course of the game. Sports always comes down to chess vs. checkers.

^^^yup Young wasn't wanted and the "he signed here for less" stuff is cover for it. He is what he is. He can put in the hoop but the nuances of the team game completely escape him.

Badly needs to work on his FTs ... 12/23 is pathetic , especially for a guard

I'll keep harping on it; he needs to diversify his game. He can't be too predictable out there...he wasn't nearly as effective as he was in the Clipper game; teams will adjust, and when they do, he needs to adjust.

If he just hit half of all of his misses last night from the FT line that might have been the difference.

He's 22, he's doing fine. Diversity will come with experience and offseason training.

And a little tutoring by Kobe :man1:

Also, the guy didn't seem to miss many free throws in the preseason games, so I'm not worried there either. He just needs to develop more of a routine at the line IMO.

Henry is a nice surprise so far. He needs to shoot better from the line and needs to learn what to do when he can't drive but he's got the makings of a long term solution for us. The rest of the offseason pick-ups other than Farmar and Kaman..... not so much.

Hmm, I've been wanting to explore that move, but wanted to do it when Kobe returns. For now Nick Young is more experienced and more in that mode of the scoring guy.

I wanted Henry to come in to learn to play the SF alongside Kobe and Pau and NOT have to be the scorer.

I would have much preferred to put Johnson in at the starting 3 until then and let him build off his last successful game with some more burn at the correct position. Just making that change would have made more sense to me than demoting Young to the bench. I would love to see Young at the 2, Blake the first guy off the bench at one, and Johnson at starting 3 .

I'll tell you, I'm no fan of D' Antoni and his rotations. :disagree:

Farmar and Young actually do have a good rapport as well. But I really would prefer to keep Young in the starting lineup at the 2 and have Johnson play SF until Kobe returns. Blake/Nash in at the top is pretty terrible as expected.

I would say they've been much MORE terrible than expected. No one knew Nash would be this limited.

But either way, you're getting your wish LJ. Here's Xavier in the first unit.
