Gaffney Gets Invite To Lakers' Training Camp

Gaffney Gets Invite To Lakers' Training Camp

Postby GoldHammish on Sun Sep 06, 2009 3:25 pm

Tony Gaffney was thrilled to receive an invitation to training camp with the defending champion Lakers.

Gaffney, a former UMass forward, hasn't had a problem switching allegiances from the Celtics to the Lakers.

"The second I got the call from the Lakers, the day after the draft, I immediately turned into a diehard Lakers fan," Gaffney told Hoopsworld.com. "I put the Boston Celtics behind me and now I'm ready to beat the Celtics with everything I've got. As of right now, I'm a Laker and I love wearing purple and gold."

Sorry buddy you're probably just camp fodder. There's some upside, but there's really no place on this team.

atleast he is a diehard Laker right now
For what it's worth, the Lakers also clinched the Pacific Division, an achievement Bryant dismissed by saying "We don't hang divisions." No, only the big NBA championship banners are considered wall-worthy for the Lakers.

yeah, he's probably not going to make the roster, but you still have to love the enthusiasm. Geez, if i got invited to the Lakers training camp, i might hire a film crew to document it! :man12:

Are you going to guarantee that, like when you said we would get Boozer?

Bill Ingram of Hoopsworld.com wrote:I've been told by a Lakers source that Gaffney has the inside track. They loved what they saw in summer league, despite his injury, and that toughness will benefit them long-term. It's his spot to win or lose in camp.

After watching some highlight video of Gaffney, best thing I can say about him is he's long, he blocked a lot of shots. Don't know if he'll make the team, but he looks like he could be a quality role player if he did.

I don't know.. he's very raw right now. But with all of the ball handlers and scorers we have on this team right now, I don't think he needs to be anything other than what he is right now - a hustle player.

Take a look at this highlights video..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvE1SP1Z-VQ

He could definitely be a Ronny Turiaf / Chris Andersen type of guy.. I havent seen enough of this guy .. but I think I could potentially like him more than Josh Powell..

Josh Powell - Good stroke, good rebounder, absolutely no post moves..

Tony Gaffney - Poor Mans Luis Scola - plays around the rim alot - looks like he gets alot of put-backs.. above average blocker .. has a few post moves.. hustle.

^ Definitely not very impressive. At this point, I'd much rather have Josh Powell.

^ Why? Playing dirty is beneath a franchise like the Lakers. There's more pride here in excellence than there is in having to play dirty. Leave those tactics to players who can't win with talent.
