Jennings not impressed with Rubio

Postby ShaqDieselLaker on Sat Jun 13, 2009 9:09 am

"Yes. Because he played in the Olympics, he's been playing pro ball since he was like 14. So there it is right there," Jennings was quoted as saying. "I can't wait to play him, though, in summer league. I'm just letting you know that now. I can't wait.

"Yeah, I think I'm a better player than he is," Jennings told reporters after working out for the Sacramento Kings Friday. "I just shoot the ball better than he can. The only thing I've seen him do sometimes is when he has a home-run pass or something like that. I think the dude is just all hype. I can't even front. I'm just going to be real with you guys."

Jennings also feels there's a number of young playmakers more capable than the Spanish teenager.

"Well, put it like this: If he was in a workout with me [and fellow point guard prospects] Jonny Flynn, Jrue Holiday, Tywon Lawson, Stephen Curry, he wouldn't probably be at the top," he was quoted as saying in SI.com.

When asked about their head-to-head matchup last year, the 6-2 Jennings boasted, "Well, when I played him, he had zero points, two assists and two turnovers. So you tell me how that went."

What does this have to do with Gasol? I don't even comprehend your post. I think you would be better suited on Spanish Team forum, because that's really why you are here. It's a pity.

The only guard that has the right to talk is Jonny Flynn (who I think will be the allstar of this draft as far as guards go). Everyone else is either a good player or a bust in my eyes.

I have high hopes for Rubio.

I've watched this kid play and he can be pretty remarkable. His floor vision is advanced and he plays the game in a remarkably controlled way. Thats what was most impressive to me, how controlled he is out there. Also he may have an awkward flat footed jumpshot, but he still managed to hit somthing around 43% from 3 point distance. He is also a very crafty defender- especially with the pick and roll.

I really can't wait to see how the transition to NBA goes for him.

He's not super athletic but he's quicker than he appears, and he ends up negating a lot of that disadvantage with craftiness and just knowing how to play the proper way. He does the little things, like using screens effectively and consistently making the right pass in the offensive flow. I really can't describe it any other way other than he plays the game like a natural.

i think it's pretty simple to understand.

you said wrote:Bust? Rubio, the next Darko?

Comparing him to Darko is just stupid. So, i can't think two things, you know nothing about Rubio and started a thread that already was created only to bash another european player, or you are just a blind hater.

Then i inform you you are my favourite poster because i always have a good time reading your messages.

For the last part i'm saying i think you should keep the bashing from one player at the time. Please, finish what you started before going with another haterism campaign.

We all know i am here because of Pau Gasol, but i don't think i am blind, i do think people can discuss with me and before this post, nobody invited me to leave. I know i can be a pain in the [Swearing is not permitted at Clublakers. It's truly a pity.

That's real classy of Jennings, putting down a future colleague. All he's trying to do is get drafted higher himself and to me he comes off as a jerk. We've seen Rubio play, he was out there against the best in the NBA and he did well, I'm failing to see how it's just hype.

is he really that good? i didn't see him dominate the college game. he's full of athleticism, but i don't know if he is ready to take on the pg responsibilities quite yet. much like teague, i can't see him as a true point and well, he doesn't have much of a jump shot either.

LOL...Rubio is not going to be a bust. He has intangibles which cannot be taught.

Jennings on the other hand....I can't be so sure about.

Exhibit A:

In June 2008, Jennings was unable to pass the entrance exam to attend college at Arizona, even after multiple attempts. Jennings announced that he was considering becoming the first American to skip college to play professionally in Europe. The NBA requires players to be at least 19 years old and one year removed from high school before entering the league, meaning that Jennings could not enter the 2008 NBA draft. Jennings has declared that his goal is to play in the NBA and that playing overseas instead of at an American college may be his best route to gain experience and make money until he is eligible to join the NBA. [6].

Sounds like a bright guy.

Exhibit B:

On July 16, 2008, Jennings signed with Lottomatica Roma of the Italian Lega A. [10] The contract he signed with Roma was for $1.65 million net income guaranteed [11] and after earning the contract with Lottomatica, Under Armour gave Jennings a $2 million contract[12] to showcase their products in the Euroleague. Jennings was the first player to play for a European team rather than play for a college basketball team since the NBA's age restriction rule was implemented.

In the Italian Lega A 2008-09 season, Jennings averaged in 27 games, 5.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.5 steals in 17.0 minutes per game. He shot 35.1 percent from the field and 20.7 percent from 3 point range in Lega A play.[13] In 16 Euroleague games, Jennings averaged 7.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.2 steals in 19.6 minutes per game. In the Euroleague he shot 38.7 percent from the field and 26.8 percent from 3 point range.[14]

The Italian league is a second tier league in my opinion (compared to say ACB)...and for the contract he signed with Roma, those numbers are underwhelming to say the least.

Well, according to his twitter:

With my comment bout Rubio, im just tryin hype the draft up a lil, make the summer league something everybody wanna see.

Sure, he definitely has an ego but I don't see anything wrong with that. It's not like he actually said rubio sucks or anything.

you know, one funny thing about the Gold medal game is that Rubio injured his wrist in the 1st quarter. After the Olympics he had surgery and he missed the first part of the season because of that. Then he led his team to the playoffs where lose 2-1 vs Real Madrid and was named Defensive Player of the Year. He is also the PG with more assists on the draft in a league where assist are counted different, whit less assists per game.

My point is, he might not be Jason Kidd, but he is no Darko Milicic for sure.

Edit,

i know it is a highlights video and everybody looks great on them, but it is nice to see for a 17 years old guy. ( Olympics footage )

Rubio would be a good pick for a team that really needs a PG. I have a feeling that he's going to get bullied in the NBA.

Rubio will probably be the next Steve Nash. Good offense, great passer, but no defense!

Best case scenario: Steve Nash
Worst case scenario: Carlos Arroyo

Rubio is one of the best defenders in the draft. If there's anything that will translate in the NBA for sure, it's his defense.

I'm sorry sir but you you are wrong.

His better case scenario would be a Jason Kidd player.

He is a tall PG, he plays also SG. He has length and long arms. Carlos Arroyo is quicker and has better outside shoot. Rubio already defends better than Nash has ever did.

Rubio has a scary court vision and he is a top defender. Those are his two top qualities. He was named defensive player of the year 2009 in Spain being a 18 year old point guard and is entering the draft being the pg with most assist in a league where assist are counted different.

I can see him putting 10 points 7 assists 2 steals 5 rebounds and 2 turnovers per game in his rookie season.

This is a perfect example of what Rubio brings to the game

Rubio has one major weakness that concerns me and thats his lack of strength...he needs a serious workout regimen to add some upper body strength or he is gonna get eaten alive. He is a good ball hawk because of his speed and length but needs to add strength.

His qualities as a PG are undisputed...the guy is easily the best point in the draft...great attitude, court vision and court awareness at such an early age is remarkable. I don't think he will be as good as Kidd because he won't be able to rebound like Kidd and probably defend as good as Kidd in his prime....but he can become a much better scorer than Kidd..he is barely 19.

He would also love to play for the Lakers...I really would love to see him in a Laker jersey at some point in his career (before he gets old).
