4 second round draft pics, any winners?

Postby Whatthef? on Thu May 26, 2011 3:43 pm

Lakers have four second round picks are there any players available that late that might be diamonds in the rough? How about some names and reasons why they might make the roster next year.

Corey Joseph from Texas, 42% from the field and 41% from 3pt and good size, played point at Texas.
Reggie Jackson from Boston College, 50% from the field, 41% from 3pt, long body, maybe another Cooper.
They should be around for the Lakers picks. Lakers need a bench cheap. That means rookies.

not much of a college guy but did see Butler/VCU players and liked what I saw out from Mack and Skeen.

I wouldn't mind if we went the David Kahn way and drafted just guards.

Mack is projected high first round and the Lakers would have to get real lucky or trade up to get him. Skeen is out there in the Lakers territory.

There are some fascinating players the Lakers have been shown taking in mock drafts. I'm going to post an offseason plan this weekend, including FAs and Draft. It's mostly the Guards LA has been linked to that interest me. But there's also a Center somewhere overseas.

I'm guessing we draft a couple of foreigners. Let them hone their skills overseas.

the rookie situation will be interesting now, because Phil NEVER used rookies. Does Brown use rookies? Because if he does, WE MIGHT ACTUALLY KEEP ROOKIES now or something, which might make things intriguing there too.

I really wanna see how this off-season goes now with Brown, I think the Lakers can look really fun and interesting next season from this off-season and training camp and everything, especially because of having Brown as coach now.

Liggins from UK might work out for us. 6'6 swingman, still really raw, but with 4 2nd rounders, it's all a roll of the dice anyway.

Keith Benson from Oakland might be okay, nearly 7 feet tall, but an absolute twig. again, another project that won't contribute.

Greg Smith (out of Fresno maybe?) is a guy I think we should take if he's there, I think he is the sleeper in the draft. he's well built, more athletic than caracter, and is a rugged player, a nice change from what we currently have.

don't know of anyone else that I would like. Maybe lighty out of Ohio State, not explosive and probably a low ceiling, but he's a guy that won't make a ton of mistakes.

hopefully we trade up and get the guy we want instead of taking 2, 3 or 4 guys we are just going to send overseas and never hear from again.

I think we need some athletic bigs and quickness out on the perimeter. So based on the current mock draft, I would take a look at a few players. By the second round there's not much left in this draft, just a few names to keep in mind if they happen to fall would be Nolan Smith, Malcolm Lee, Josh Selby and Cory Joseph. Getting help on the perimeter is going to be much harder than getting quality bigs this year.

As far as the bigs go, I really hope the Lakers target Keith Benson (Oakland) and/or Vernon Macklin (Florida). Benson is a project and he's not very strong but the way the league is going speed and athleticism will be king for a long time to come. Jamie Skeen is also a possibility but I'd rather the two guys above than him.

Internationally the only guy that's a realistic target that I know about is Robin Benzing out of Germany. 6-10 shooter, would definitely be a project but since we almost always take an international project, I think he would be my choice.

I like Corey Joseph from Texas..I think in a few years he could be a decent NBA player...Josh Selby was a good highschooler and has a lot of talent but not sure if maturity wise he is ready for the NBA...My ultimate sleeper and I've said it before is Liggins from KY...This guy is a really good Defender....he can guard multiple positions..he guarded Kemba Walker and did a decent job......he is 6' 6"......I think he could turn out to be a decent NBA player if he has the right mind set...

We could even package some of those to move up a bit.

But in the second round I don't expect any great picks to be there. So I would prefer if we gamble and take young, high potential picks that drop because of attitude or go under the radar for whatever reason. If one of those 4 pans out, we might have a rotation player or even a starter in the future.

We should draft at least one PG and a PF.

You're not going to "win" with youngsters, but you can grab them cheap and see what they can offer. I'm hoping we develop young talent with a new coach.

I saw a couple of mocks showing us taking Travis Leslie and Scotty Hopson...would LOVE to get these guys....they both are super athletic and both have game....Scotty Hopson getting tutored by Kobe would be sick...he has game...reminds me of Jamal Crawford

I like Jamie Skeen,
he outplayed nearly every big man in the tourney and is widely underrated.
He was Mr. Basketball at North Carolina his senior year and actually went to Wake Forest before transferring to VCU.
Last season, he didn't shine as much due to playing behind 1st round draft pick Larry Sanders, but this season he outplayed other NBA prospects in the Morris Brothers, etc. Even in their loss against Butler he seemed unstoppable.

A steal for a late 2nd in my opinion, and VCU is developing a nice reputation for producing NBA quality guys. As last 2 years they had 2 first round picks in Maynor and Sanders both who were immediately able to contribute.

Re Lighty
One thing stats and notes don't show is he is pure energizer bunny. If this was the nfl draft he'd be labeled "nonstop motor". His OSU coach Motta said he's never seen anyone like this.

Cole WAS being mocked late or possibly not at all, but I think you're right. He's too quick and he's so young he's a great late first round pick for a good team to pick up and do something with down the road.
