I want some speed, athleticism, and shooting. Most shooters in the 2nd round are undersized two guards (ie. Glock) who can't last in the league. So I'd prefer we address that need in FA.

I have to promote a Memphis kid with my first look at a prospect...it wouldn't feel right doing it any other way.

DJ Stephens (6-5, G/F) - brings tough D and elite athleticism. If he's not in the dunk contest next year then I'll be quite surprised.

Here's what Ford had to say about him in today's chat...

Parker (Tennessee)

What are your thoughts on DJ Stephens as a pro prospect?
Chad Ford (1:18 PM)

Most explosive leaper I've ever covered in my 15 plus years following the draft. He's got crazy ups. Love his motor and quickness as well. He doesn't have much of an offensive game, but the defensive havoc he brings to the floor ought to be enough to get him drafted by someone.

^i couldnt help but notice stephens in the tourney. super athletic, but do you think he has the skills to play at the nba level?

i'd go for lebryan nash or deshaun thomas if they're available at whatever pick we end up with

Next prospect I'd like to mention is -- Solomon Jones (6-6, SF) out of Arizona.

Draft Express did a prospect reel of him last summer:

Here's his profile:

I don't have anyone in mind yet, but a SF/SG wing player would be ideal.

I'm thinking an Earl Clark frame, but a faster and more agile player that plays exclusively on the wing.

^ From Larry Coon on 1/28

Larry Coon of ESPN wrote: In summary, while the Lakers won’t have a first round pick in this June’s draft, they will have the lesser of their own and Dallas’ second round pick, and also will have Memphis’ pick if it’s one of the bottom five.

So as of today, we would have two 2nd round picks.

I wouldn't mind taking a gamble on Seth Curry. He's an excellent shooter from 3, can create his own shot off the dribble, and is a decent finisher for someone who doesn't excel in the athleticism department. Although he's not a great defensive player he has been improving. Honestly he reminds me of Goudelock, but I don't know if management is interested in drafting another tweener.

So as of today, we would have two 2nd round picks.

Thanks JSM.

If that's the case: get me the most athletic SF/SG type you can in the 2nd round. If there's none really there, draft the most athletic PG/SG type you can.

We need a young gun with some swagger that can jump out of the building. But we don't want to pay him too much. :man10:

Don't know if this was posted but looks like we worked out a couple of guys:

Yannis Koutroupis: Former ND power forward Jack Cooley had a strong showing in a workout with the Los Angeles Lakers today. Made over 60 percent from NBA 3. Twitter @YannisHW

Yannis Koutroupis: Colton Iverson also worked out for the Lakers today and ran the floor really well, a product of the hard work he's put in @impactbball. Twitter @YannisHW
In the real world, the day Steph awoke at 9 a.m. to begin his Ustream show, Kobe Bryant probably awoke at the same time, even if it was 6 a.m. in California, and lifted weights.

he's not a great athlete or a great shooter, but i think he'll find a place in the nba. he does everything pretty well, but nothing fantastically. but he's a gamer, which counts for something, imo.

if glen rice jr. is on the board when the lakers pick, i think he's worth a look.

the little i've seen from brandon paul makes me think he could be a better pro than he's currently projected.

trevor mbakwe is also interesting at that point in the draft. some red flags on injuries, but could be a faried type if he's healthy.

the problem is that we're not sure where the lakers will have holes come july. if howard stays and they keep clark and hill, i'm not sure there's a ton of room for another pf or c. so, my guess right now is that sf will still be a need. thus, i'd put rice at the top of my list.

any athletic combo guard type would be welcomed, too. monta ellis was had around that spot a few years ago...

Glen Rice Jr. would be fantastic, but no way he lasts to our pick .

Edit: I thought you meant Tim Hardaway Jr.

I like Myck Kabongo, he has the best ball skills of any other draftee. He just needs to work on his shot.

Peyton Siva - per Lakers Instagram, he's working out with us.

He was huge for Louisville in the championship game. I loved watching him play, he was fearless and confident. He's smaller for a PG, who cares a la Nate Robinson/Brooks, but he's very quick and is high octane on the offensive end. Great penetrator and passer, his shooting could use a little work, but that wouldn't be his game.

I'm not really sold on Siva and his game transferring to the NBA. He's not a good shooter and because of his size he doesn't have the potential to be that good of a defender. He is however a very hard worker and has a good motor, both skills he'll need to utilize in order to make a roster next season.

James Ennis out of Long Beach. :man1: (my alma mater).

The guy is just a very good athlete and can be a good defender. He's got good size at about 6'6"-6'7". Couldn't hurt with a 2nd round pick or even undrafted prospect.

Like I said, defense is a moot point for point guards. Size doesn't really tell the whole story. Look at Morris, Blake, those guys are decent defenders, yet we get torched on a nightly basis by any guard. Then you look at players like Nate Robinson, who's main role is to score, defensively, isn't THAT big of a liability.

And then, you look at players like Avery Bradley (6'2) and Eric Bledsoe (6'1 - Same as Siva) who are primarily known as defensive specialists at their position, am I wrong? What do these two have in common that some point guards don't? Speed and athleticism. That's what makes them good defenders at PG. Siva is probably THE MOST athletic point guard in this draft, and one of the speediest. AND if you've watched some of Siva's highlights, he's a pretty good help defender to come and block some shots.

But I'm not looking at Siva for his defensive ability, nor to be a shooter, but his ability to attack the paint. He creates havoc with his speed and is very underrated passer. Tony Parker (also 6'1) isn't a well known shooter, even though he is known to hit some big shots, but his game is attacking the paint with his speed. Something I believe Siva can do.

Many project him to be a mid-late 2nd round pick, or even go undrafted. I think he'll go early second with the kind of pre-draft workouts he's been having. If the Lakers have a chance in the 2nd to draft him, I REALLY hope we don't pass up on him. He is something this team desperately needs.

Just some numbers from the Draft Combine:

Image

He placed top-10 in most of the drills they had.

where's andre Roberson being projected right now? length, athleticism, motor. I like it in the second round.

I'm on board with picking Siva. I don't follow college ball much so I will trust whoever the Lakers pick, but I loved what I saw out of him in the NCAA championship game. Thought he held his own and then some against Trey Burke. Can get to the basket and create, which is something we need desperately. Reminds me a little bit of a more athletic Jordan Farmar.

i posted this in realgm when i totally meant to post it here

myck kabongo - steal of the century at 2nd round. i wanted selby in 2011 who absolutely crushed in summer league despite not yet making it into the starting rotation at memphis. i see the same great upside in kabongo except he's a pure pg devoted to getting his team involved. real cerebral game with an athletic body. i call him rondo jr because he isn't great at creating shots for himself, but the mechanics are there.

solomon hill, cj leslie - very good players, versatile, can bother bigs with speed, and smaller players with size. both were hot prospects out of HS.

----
late first rounders i like, which i doubt will fall, but i honestly think they have great talent and upside

Reggie Bullock. SF, shot the 3 at a great clip in college. 6'7".

Addresses two needs. A backup SF and 3 point shooting.
