All-Star Ultimate Fantasy Draft Scenario

All-Star Ultimate Fantasy Draft Scenario

Postby MusixFinest on Thu Aug 29, 2013 9:17 am

Yesterday, I found this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHbdbj4TRfw on YouTube that I had never seen before and regret missing when it aired on TV. But it got me thinking who my all-time NBA All-Star team would be and what team could possibly go against it and keep up with them in a 7-game series. So this is what I came up with. Keep in mind, we're talking about each player in their primes.

Team A

PG Magic Johnson/John Stockton
SG Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant
SF Scottie Pippen/Oscar Robertson
PF Tim Duncan/Karl Malone
C Kareem Abdul-Jabbar/Wilt Chamberlain

Specialist - 3 pt. shooting - Reggie Miller
Cheerleader/Human Victory Cigar/White Flag - Christian Laettner

Coach Phil Jackson

Team B

PG Gary Payton/Steve Nash
SG Sidney Moncrief/Kevin Durant
SF Larry Bird/LeBron James
PF Kevin Garnett/Bill Rusell
C Hakeem Olajuwon/Shaquille O'Neal

Specialist - Jack-of-all-trades - Grant Hill
Cheerleader/Human Victory Cigar/White Flag - Adam Morrison

Coach Greg Popovich

The debates I'd like to see go on in this thread are the following:
(a) Like the matchup? Think you can pick a better Team A? Or a better Team B?
(b) How would it play out in a 7-game series? Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each team, the individual matchups, etc.
(c) How would either coach ride their team to victory? Strategies against Team A or B?

I do apologize. It's been a slow off-season, and I enjoy talking to b-ball heads about this kinda stuff. Hope someone out there cares enough to respond...intelligently.

(a) the match-up between Team A and Team B? Team A would win almost every game. I think Team A could be improved definitely, but you'd have to take away from Team B to do so probably. Team B could be improved a little maybe, but it's splitting hairs.

(b) Team A wins any 7 game series. They have the two greatest SGs of all time on the same team along with the two greatest Centers, the greatest PG, and probably the greatest PF of all time. Their team is ridiculous. It would probably never lose.

Against Team A- Honestly I can't think of a single advantage against their starting five. Defensively maybe Magic would have some trouble with speedy guards, but that's about it. Off the bench... I don't know. Maybe try to run on them a little bit. Get their bigs having to run in transition. Even then you're talking about two fantastic athletes in Malone and Chamberlain... By the way Chamberlain would probably start.

Against Team B- Run on them. Team B wouldn't have much trouble with anyone on that team defensively besides Shaq. Wilt would be probably my favorite to guard Shaq, but Shaq was still probably the strongest person the league had ever seen near the basket in his prime.

(c) Team A has Phil Jackson coaching the smartest minds the game had ever seen? There's no strategy against that. He made Jordan and Kobe legends. What do you think he'd do with two AMAZING basketball minds in Magic and Kareem? And that's just the starters.

Team B would be the Spurs on steroids. Offensive sets that are hammered into the team, sound fundamentals, but with enough trust in his stars to flow when the game needs it. The problem with that? It wins when it's up against everybody but the very best. Fundamentals get you so far, but Championships usually take something more dynamic. I think most of the dynamic players on Team A and that would spell the end for Team B more often than not.

Could you run against a lineup of Gary P, Sidney Moncrief, Grant Hill, LeBron James, and Kevin Garnett if Team B came out with that?

The one weakness I see in Team A is 3 pt. shooting, save for Reggie Miller and John Stockton. Could have problems spacing the floor; Team B could pack it in. I think Team B has a bit more balance and flexibility. It can go big or small. It has deadly 3 pt. shooters in Nash, Durant, and Bird to keep the game close.

But having MJ and Kobe on your team wins you a lot of close games...

True, outside shooting could be an issue, but scoring wouldn't be. Kobe and MJ would get to their spots mid-range no problem. You can pack the paint against Kareem if you want, he'll still score.

And a lineup of Magic/Bryant/Jordan/Malone/Kareem (or Wilt) could run against anybody, all day, all game long.

I ran it through a basketball simulator and got interesting results:

When Team A was at home, it won a 7-game series 4-2.
When Team B was at home, it won a 7-game series 4-1.

Team A definitely needs some work on spacing, although they would still be dominant. Bird would be awesome on that team, but I guess then it's too unfair. Lol.

I think it's weird to see Bill Russell at PF and Durant at SG. When I think about Durant, I think of a guy who struggled at SG and strictly plays SF/PF now. He might even occasionally play C. Also, since we're on a Lakers forum, how can you leave out...Jerry West??? Aka Mr. Clutch. Aka The Logo. I'd put him at SG before Moncrief or Durant.

I think Dr. J should be on a team too.

I chose Sidney Moncrief, keeping in mind that Jordan had real trouble in their matchups with one another. The Squid was a great two-way player. He'd make Jordan work; that's for sure. I chose KD because he is as prolific a scorer as Kobe, minus the killer instinct, of course. And as for Bill at the PF spot, Shaq would benefit playing with someone focused solely on D and rebounding. He is also quick enough to keep up with Karl.

I wish I could play with these two teams in a video game...

I originally had Bird on Team A, but I did think it was unfair (though Pip has better chemistry with Jordan).
