Asik and Lin on the block if Houston lands Dwight

Asik and Lin on the block if Houston lands Dwight

Ken Berger of Sportsline wrote:Emboldened by their pursuit of free agent Dwight Howard, the Rockets have called several teams and made Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin available in potential trades, league sources told CBSSports.com.

If the Rockets land Howard, Asik would become expendable. One potential destination that rival executives have identified is Philadelphia, where former Rockets executive Sam Hinkie is the Sixers' new general manager.

Hinkie was part of the Houston front office that scored both Asik and Lin with backloaded offer sheets as restricted free agents last summer. If the Knicks (Lin) and Bulls (Asik) had chosen to match the respective offer sheets, they would've had to structure their deals with $15 million "balloon" payments in the third year. But the Rockets only needed to account for the average of the three-year, $25.1 million deals -- $8.375 million per year, a manageable number for a starting center and point guard, respectively.

Rival teams say the Rockets are making Lin available, as well, though they'd have to get a starting point guard in return. As part of their cap-clearing maneuvers to land Howard,

Teams believe the Rockets will move both Asik and Lin if they close the deal with Howard this week. Lin, whose acquisition last summer was heralded as a coup, was not invited to Houston's pitch meeting with Howard, sources said.

I think Asik and Lin are the types you go get after you've already gotten your Championship players. They're role players. They're fill ins.

I don't want either one taking up room when we could get something good for them. Especially Lin.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN wrote:Houston Rockets center Omer Asik has formally asked the team to trade him in the wake of the team landing Dwight Howard in free agency. But the Rockets have no plans to grant Asik's wish, sources told ESPN.com.

While many Rockets players rejoiced at landing Howard last week and spread cheer on their Twitter accounts, Asik had a different reaction.

After starting all 82 games for the Rockets last season and averaging 10.1 points, 11.7 rebounds and 1.1 blocks, Asik was not happy about his playing time and role being diminished. Both Howard and Asik are true centers and in most situations, it would seem playing them together would be challenging.

Shortly after Howard announced his decision, Asik was in contact with the team and asked to be moved. The Rockets, however, have turned away offers thus far and will continue to do so, sources said.

On Sunday at the Orlando Pro Summer League, Rockets' coach Kevin McHale said the team will try to mend fences with Asik.

"With Omer, he had a great year for us last year and really became one of the top centers in the league," McHale said. "It's just when you have an opportunity to get Dwight, it's hard not to. I'm sure Omer right now is a little down in the dumps, but we'll pick him up."

McHale said he can see lineups when Asik and Howard would play together in addition to Asik, who along with Howard would create perhaps the best defensive and rebounding rotation in the league, backing Howard up. McHale called to mind the 1980s when the Rockets used lineups with Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson.

"You do play two bigs," McHale said. "You have to get spacing and you have to make sure your small guys have got to make sure they keep the court spaced."

Hakeem/Sampson worked because Hakeem could actually shoot more than 5 feet from the basket. Silly Rockets.

Problem is with McHale'a reasoning of playing 2 bigs, Dwight can't shoot and I don't think Asik is great at it either, that offense would look UGLY. I'd trade him if I were them, this is their chance to get out of that crazy contract. Plus you don't want a player on your team that doesn't get along with Dwight, that can grow like cancer, soon Dwight will be mocking him behind his back, and badmouthing him to teammates and opponents.

i'm guessing Houston tried to move him but couldn't get the return they wanted. this is a gortat situation all over again. they'll end up moving him for the same deals they're turning down right now.

also lol at them trying to move lin and finding no takers. toldya. dude was super overrated and overpaid; now figure out how to make a poor jumpshooting pg work with howard and harden.

And so it begins.

Houston made the right plays to land Howard, but it'll be a year or two before they even get their roster straightened out.

I hope we somehow rebuild faster than they can build around Howard. I'd love to win a ring while Howard is in Houston.

it would be awesome if the lakers got a couple draft picks, signed kobe and pau to low dollar deals, then struck gold in 2015 FA with say, LMA and rondo, completely surpassing the upstart rockets in the process. gold.

I'm going to write up a blog about how the Lakers can/should let the next two seasons play out, but I don't think it's far fetched to say we could be among the league's best again in 2015 while the Rockets haven't changed much in that time.

exactly what i was thinking...not everyone is happy, so naturally Dwight wont be too happy

waiting for the moment when they put Asik in at the end of games because even tho he sucks at the FT line, he makes them from time to time

or they put him in because he's playing with more fire and defending better than Dwight....
